Following a 500 year old quest along PORTUGAL's border castles

On top of a mountain castle at dawn I found an inscription detailing the story of Duarte de Armas who toured all the border castles in 1509. I decided to follow in his footsteps, this is the first of a series of videos over the next while, viewing Portugal through the lens of the 62 border castles.

As always Nick, great cinematography! The festival footage was fabulous. It was very obvious the town/association had put a ton of work into the event, organizing costuming, parades, music, vendors etc. So nice to see big crowds in attendance, enjoying themselves and supporting the festival. Looked to be an excellent event 👍 Great info on the castles. Until you said they had tunnels to take their horses down to get water etc. it had never occurred to me to even question "how" they watered and fed the animals and the people. Fascinating. Looking forward to Part 2 👏👏

There are many castles and fortresses that were not shown and mentioned on your map. There are numerous castles and fortresses on the coastline as well as in the interior of the country. And not just on the border with Spain. Many of these castles and fortresses are mostly more than 500 years old. They are even close to a thousand years old in the case of the castles built by the Templars. There are also others that are more than a thousand years old. This is the case of the castle of S. Jorge, Guimarães Castle, Silves Castle among many others... Then there are also castles and fortresses that are thousands of years old. Built by peoples such as the Phoenicians, Iberians, Celts, Romans and defensive structures of the Neolithic era. Portugal is made up of a very old territory, where many bloody battles were fought with many different peoples and all this culminated in what Portugal is today...One of the oldest countries, full of rich history in Europe and the world. Note: in addition to the castles and fortresses built on the mainland Portuguese. There are also castles and fortresses in the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, as well as around the world, built by the Portuguese in the colonies they founded in the 4 corners of the world. Something fantastic and almost unbelievable for the time... A very small people, but of great Bravery, audacity and courage, they achieved what others had never done... Opening up like this... a new era...And all done by a handful of valiant warriors of Luzitan blood... Success for the channel👍
