@ 20:11 X = 2 also works! The square root of 2 + 2 is the square root of 4. The square root of 4 is 2. 2 squared = 4. 2 - 4 = -2 Negative 2 squared = -2 * -2 which = 4. 4 = 4.
@joaomane4831
@joaomane4831 Жыл бұрын
I see your point but remember the original equation which was Square root of x+2 equals x - 4. If you plug 2 into it you will get square root of 2 + 2 which is 4 and then square root of 4 is 2 and on the right side you get 2 - 4 which is -2. You don't square both parts because that's the method we used to solve the equation but that doesn't belong to the equation, per se.

i have a question: for the problem at 21:49 when you plugged 2 back into the equation you said that the -2 isn't the same as the square root of four, but i thought the square root of four is both negative 2 and positive two?? or is this a problem where we assume all answers are positive?

It took me quite a bit to buy the fact that that one radical equation had NO solution. So to convince myself I had to take each member and make y-functions out of them and then proceeded to graph. Seeing that the graphs could not intersect...then that was when I was convinced.

I strongly disagree with you at 9:00 We can only square both sides when both of them are positive! Ex: sqrt(A)=-4 doesn't mean A=16 In this case, the right side is positive or negative depends on x. So my solution is sqrt(x-15)+sqrt(x)=3.(Which can make sure that both sides are positive) The answer stays the same but it's suitable for algebra rule.
