I loved Ali as a hero when I was a skinny blonde kid growing up in the UK in the mid 70s even before I even knew who he was other than the heavy weight champion. It's tragic that he didn't retire after the 75 frazer fight. That might have spared him from the serious effects of Parkinson's

How's the Kool-Aid? Looks like you've had quite a few glasses. Be careful driving... Great? Yes. Greatest? No. The trouble here is folks have difficulty separating Ali the man (one of the most influential and important figures of the 20th century) from Ali the Boxer (a largely one-dimensional light-punching, clinch-and-grabber who was never the same after his unwarranted suspension) If you look CLOSELY at his fights, you'll see some unfortunate diving from the competition (Liston, Folley, Williams), some very 'favorable' judging (Norton III, Young), crazy stoppages (Foreman, Lyle), and Ali engaging in all manner of holding and wrestling opponents (sorry everyone - the Foreman fight was grotesque) that would've got any other fighter penalized. Ali the boxer has few untarnished wins over truly elite competition and I say that as someone who admires him and his skills greatly. I've watched most of his fights and many of them 10 times or more. A legend that will be talked about hopefully forever, but one who's accomplishments inside the ring were greatly inflated by the public's adoration of him. Remember him fondly, but remember him accurately.

Williams should not have been allowed in the same ring as Ali. Don't get me wrong. The big cat even on his best night at the peak of his powers would probably never have got near Ali anyway.

that night no boxer either past or present would have lived with ali that night. ali was actually at his supreme best and prime that night . ali had dominated sonny liston and you could see the confidence and enthusiasm coming out of ali in the fight that night . all ali's doubters shut up that night no one absolutely no reporter dared criticise ali that night. some of them white boys hated it and you knew they had to accept that ali was good because instead of booing they just kept silent. silence said everything.

Ali is the greatest of all time. Not because he never lost, but because of several other attributes. If you beat him, you didn't do it twice. He would come back stronger. He was willing to lose everything for what he believed in. You may not agree with what he did, but you have to admire that he stood up for what he believed and he lost the best years of his fighting career. That's why he is the greatest.

Great work with this video. Sure wish we could have those years he was sidelined back.. Would have loved to see a bout with Frazier and foreman when he was at the top of his game. Would his confidence have caused him to be knocked out by Foreman or would it have allowed him to dodge and tag more effectively.. I doubt he would have used rope a dope as effectively (wisdom and age) despite having better hand speed when he was younger. . Frazier was tough as nails but his bull style made him an easy target for the far more powerful Foreman..

Looking back...Ali was ultimately a great American...He stood by his convictions, and sacrificed the best years of his boxing life...and then, he still was great enough to take his title back!...I wish he could have had those 3 years at his very peak, knocked out all the other contenders, and then retired in his early 30s...I think the horrible punishment the man took, to weather the storm of his later career, took its toll in his final years...What a shame that he had to fight through all of this...and what a shame that so many thousands of American men had to lose their lives in a totally nonsensical war...Ali stood for everybody who was victimized at that time in history.

About the Liston and Ali fight, I have to ask a question: Why would a man like Liston just "throw away the fight"? The answer is simple: Liston knew he couldnt win.
@charlesmelonson19125 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU Alex
@christophertyler55445 жыл бұрын
He didn't and I've listened to all the theories and watched all of Ali's fights and the second Liston fight in slow motion backwards and forwards, several times, and it's clear he took an excellent, sharp right - the same type of short, fast, sharp right you can see Ali drop many other fighters with. Zorre Folley (spelling?) comes to mind, but that right against Liston clearly landed and had taken others out. At that point, too, after the first fight and rounds in this fight, I think Liston had come to the conclusion that he couldn't beat Ali. This isn't often shown on the tapes here on KZbin, either, but Jersey Joe Walcott was the referee and he actually did a slow 10 count (largely b/c he kept trying to get Ali to a neutral corner) - which let Liston barely beat the 10 count - and then Liston began fighting again for a few moments. However, the timekeepers at the table informed Walcott that well more than 10 seconds had passed and that was it. Liston was a very prideful man, too, and there are tons of holes in the theory. While, regardless, Ali clearly showed through the two fights he had more than enough to beat Liston.
@trinihammer4 жыл бұрын
Liston never threw that fight. liston got beat good and proper. if I was liston and I was going to throw that fight there is no way I am going to throw it in the first round. I would try to make it look good and then probably throw it in the second round. no way I am going to throw a heavyweight title fight in the first round with the whole world watching. the way liston lost that fight it looked so obvious it was a fix that it actually wasn't a fix. EVERYBODY THOUGHT IT WAS A FIX SO IT JUST COULDNT BE A FIX IT WAS JUST TOO GLARING.

Joe Frazier was the closest to dominate ali but ali had the final win of the 3 bouts with the man. ali is what u call a 365 degree fighter, speed, strength, humor, thinking about the fight, strategies and what not. REFLECTIONS ON ROCKY MARCIANO Written May 8, 2001 by John A. Bardelli Part 4: I have read: "Marciano is NEVER listed above Louis in any all time top ten poll," as one commentator wrote to me. Keep in mind that Louis was 37 years old when he fought Marciano. Marciano was 27. Louis was past his prime but Marciano had not yet reached his prime. Louis, on a comeback, had won 8 victories in a row and his over-all record stood at 56-2 with 50 KOs to Marciano's 37-0 with 32 KOs. When one says that Marciano is never listed above Louis in any "all time" top ten poll, have you considered Joe Louis' own "poll?" Louis said, "I had a bad weakness I kept hid throughout my career. I didn't like to be crowded, and Marciano always crowded his opponents. That's why I say I could never have beaten him." Now some of you might say that is a humble Joe Louis speaking. Yet, when Louis addressed Muhammad Ali in an exchange some years later in Las Vegas and Ali reminded Louis that he fought a bunch of bums who were called the "bum of the month" club, Louis shot back to Ali, "if you'd been fighting at that time you would have been called one of the bum of the month fighters as well." I submit that also was a humble Joe Louis speaking as well. The truth is always humble. Size is important. The intangible of heart coupled with Spartan conditioning is more important. Angelo Dundee who saw some big fighters as a trainer and manager during his sojourn said of Marciano: "Marciano is the most underrated heavyweight of all time. He had so much more than they ever gave him credit for. He was capable of getting those bigger, heavier guys and destroying them." Walcott Told the author, John A. Bardelli, in a 1974 taped interview, "Marciano kept coming, never stopping" Joe Frazier fought some big boys including George Foreman. Yet Frazier says: "Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. Rocky Marciano is second only to Louis." Yes, I acknowledge that Marciano is ranked behind Louis but keep in mind what happened when they fought. Note that Frazier ranks Marciano ahead of both Foreman and Ali. George Foreman ranks them thus: 1. Joe Louis, 2. Rocky Marciano, 3. Jack Johnson, and 4. Muhammad Ali. Are you getting the picture what fighters think of Rocky Marciano? Again, note that Foreman ranks Marciano ahead of Ali, Frazier, and Jack Johnson for goodness sake. Another fighter, who saw much throughout his long and historical career, was Abe Attell who said: "What fighter do you think could battle successfully with Rocky 20 or 25 rounds, assuming all of them to be at their peak? No one, in my opinion. His power in setting and carrying the pace was such that none of the modern heavyweights since John L. Sullivan's time could endure his offense for the distance I have mentioned." I will grant my readers that virtually all of the "experts" do rate Louis ahead of Marciano in ranking the 10 greatest heavyweights of all time. So what? Does this mean that a prime Joe Louis would have beaten a prime Rocky Marciano? Louis was a great, great, great fighter. Louis observations about the crowding style of Marciano and Louis' weakness in fighting such fighters have to be taken into consideration. Until a fighter's weakness is exploited, its hard to envision just what has to be done to beat him. The weakness is never apparent until the right style is utilized to lend a crushing defeat. Tunney-Dempsey, Schmeling-Louis, Braddock-Baer and Douglas-Tyson come readily to mind. The weakness may be an anomaly, a fluke, and not something that would happen again in 100 fights. Yet, the loss happens and with it comes the revelation of flaws in style, flaws and weaknesses in character, in temperament, in managerialship, and in other intangibles that lend themselves to defining the truly great fights in our midst. It is now some 51 years following the retirement of Rocky Marciano who hung up his gloves in 1955. If he had flaws, they were flaws which were not exploited by any fighter during his ring career that served to mar his ring record. Psychologically, it is difficult to envision Rocky Marciano as being capable of being beaten. Its like saying we can't envision what an older John F. Kennedy would look like for he doesn't age within the framework of our memories in the same sense that Marciano is incapable of being beaten since we were not witness to the unfolding of such an occurrence. Those mind sets are with us for a lifetime and you can analyze with computers all you want it won't change anything. Marciano didn't use drugs, didn't drink, didn't dissipate, didn't abuse women, didn't have women in his training camp, didn't neglect the fact that he was worshiped as a hero to children and adulating adults, always trained to perfection, had perhaps the greatest endurance of all heavyweights, came into the ring in shape every time, left it all in the ring each and every fight, didn't use abusive language, loved and was loved by his family, provided for his wife and family, was considerate and respectful of his opponent, fans, reporters, and women and was respected by all who knew him. There have been other fighters who have espoused these once time honored attributes. But there's none who put it all together and left the ring with an unbeaten record as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. Sure, our minds can be imaginative and envision a fistful of "what-ifs." But give me for every 100 of those "what-ifs" a single accomplishment and when you measure all of Marciano's accomplishments in his brief walk through life, even his 49-0 career boxing record pales by comparison for the measure of Marciano is his character. The fight career is mere frosting on the cake

To me don't matter who beat him or who he should have lost to, not many we talk about, liked Frazier and loved his left hook, thing of beauty and the 3fights with Ali and the rounds they fought, must have been about 40, was too young at time but love watching him and Tyson apart, heavyweight boxing is like walruses fighting

One commentator mentions at 27:20 that he didn't think Ali had lost anything while fighting Quarry. Coming back after 43 months in prison it's obvious to me he lost between 10 to 15 percent of his quickness. He still had the same swagger and moved around the ring like he used to but his hand speed had lessened quite a bit.

Truly and justly, Ali was and certainly will be the greatest boxer of all time. Allah may grant him peace and blessings.

Spent a great deal of time in his company. He didn’t know me but treated me and the other young men around him as though we were all part of the same gang. Just all friends laughing and joking. One of the boys. True celebrity with such class he went out of his way to make you feel like a long time friend. It was his natural way. I don’t think he knew how to behave important.

You said it.When they mention heart in the ring they should have Ali picture right beside it.Thats what Tyson lacked was heart @ a desire to be the best.

Watch Jack Johnson boxing tribute, Johnson had great hand speed and appears to be very powerful, I recall seeing him swinging a man who must weigh at least 250 pounds around on his neck. Johnson was also much like Ali, he would laugh and taunt his opponents inside and outside the ring. I think if the fight went inside, that is when it'd get interesting, both guys were great infighters. I seen Ali really punish Liston in the first fight with inside punches, and I seen Jack hurt jeffries too

i think there's a lot to be said for a boxer that was never knocked out, that is tremendous. Numbers mean nothing, to me a knockout is a true loss and Ali never truly lost
@klgovalpo9 жыл бұрын
and considering that he foght with great fighters like Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, , even Holmes
@MrAmmo309 жыл бұрын
klgovalpo all big hitters, and none of them came close to knocking him out. he just chewed them up and spit them out. its like roy jones said "you fed your big dog to a smart cat". Ali was one smart cat

***** Holmes had the best jab ever. But that was his only great attribute fighter.

Scott Cohen i think you can also include a cast iron jaw in Holmes attribute. He get up after a killing right cross by Shavers. That´s something

***** let me rephrase.. numbers mean nothing for a man that took every punch off a guy who's punch was so hard his opponents are still pissing blood to this day.
