Elaine, it is probable that Denis is trying to show Alia has something akin to clairvoyant omniscience. All the ESP Herbert writes about in the Dune books are very real. Perhaps you'll get a chance to read my autobiography once it is published. My life has, oddly enough, been full of many instances of our paranormal potential manifesting itself. The accent in Alia is on the first syllable “ahl”, not the second. It’s also pronounced “AHL-ya”, not “a-LEE-uh” like the old R&B artist Aaliyah. If you’re going to make a video nerding out on this, idk, you might figure out how to properly say the name first…

I've read all six Frank Herbert Dune novels multiple times over the years and I've always seen Alia and her fate as one of the most tragic individual fates in Dune only really surpassed by the God Emperor himself. None of the adaptations have really captured that properly so far although the Children of Dune miniseries made a reasonable attempt at it. I'm quietly optimistic that Villeneuve will do it justice.

Sadly, Denis plans to stop at Messiah so hopefully, somebody just as credible will have to carry the reigns going forward. Hopefully, the scriptwriters can stay on to keep the consistency going, Greig Fraser included as well...

Christ, the Guild's more important for the story than she is! But I agree with you, they need to do parts three AND four. (And maybe five.) Best sci-fi ever written. "The Spice must flow."

@@marknovak6498good point. It can all begin to look like someone else’s party, can’t it ? Once a production decides to retwire things in a novel for the sake of the movie, it can be a slippery slope. As we all know, they did a lot of that in LOR, but they went over the line having Faramir try to take Frodo and Sam to Minas Tirith. To me, Faramir was the coolest guy in the Trilogy, and he would NEVER have done that. Peter, Philippe and Fran we too far.

Dune minus Alia, is not Dune. She's absolutely intrumental to Paul's arc of failure and into Desert Prophet. On top of that, she's an amazing character with an inhuman-human identity.

Alia's ability to be in Paul, and Mohaim's mind is by nature paradoxical and involves something akin to none corporeal time travel. She's related to at least one of them, and maybe even both. This really doesn't explain in what manner Alia is going to appear on screen. Still think they're going to do some Hobbit/Dwarf FX here to make a fully grown woman appear a child.

I think in this case we need to give Villeneuve some slack. Sometimes fans can be hypercritical if the portrayal of a character does not meet exactly what they imagine. Alia is tricky, and I think Villeneuve will do his best and it will be good. On another note, it appears that Villeneuve will take a bvreak from Dune to do another movie before tackling Dune Messiah. I hope he does the third installment of SIcario.

Have you forgotten about the time jump that takes place in the book after the water of life ceremony? Have you forgotten the vision Paul already had in Part 1 of baby Alia being held by Jessica? It would be the BIGGEST disservice to the source material if Denis decided to not do the time jump and just have Part 2 take place in less than a 9 months span, just so they can skip out on trying to make Alia work on screen! Jamis' funeral will likely be cut. It would likely complicate things too much to have Harah introduced in the mix. Some things are best left to those willing to read the books. I rather like when some details are reserved for us book readers. We're the 'true' fans here. It would be much as they did for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy - Glorfindel and Bombadil were largely ignored, but we who read can savor the detail they add to the story.

I am looking forward to seeing how he handles this challenge. The difficult thing when transferring from paper to imagery, is that everybody imagine something different. So for some people it won’t be done right, for others it will be “Just how I imagined it” and for others it will be more of a “I didn’t think of it that way, nicely done.”

There is always one thing that dothered me about Alia. Normally reverend mothers just had acces to their female heritage line, but it seems( wont give a big plot for later away I hope), she can be bothered by male forbearers. Paul and, later, Leto are Kwisatz Haderach and can do both. Is Alia some sort of female Kwisatz Haderach? Or is that part of her abomination?

If Frank Herbert novel is poetry writhed the voice of Nerd Cookies wit her Calming Excitement voice is the way to hear that poetry... Much of the details of the Dune novels are missing from my memory been in a time were I was developing my English and lot of ideas escaped my comprehension. Now with this videos i can understand much more of the ideas portrayed in the original novel. Hope the Chapter 2 get as interesting in the character development than the previous one and your description.

I think this all suggests Alia might be in the womb throughout entirety of the film. If they don’t bring Alia to the forefront before the Fremen storm the Emperor’s palace, it will be a critical mistake. Alia infiltrates first as an ambassador for Paul, and SHE kills Baron Harkonnen. If they change this, it’ll ruin the movie.

An interesting contrast between Paul and Alia was their limitations. Paul didn't have ancestral memories of a Reverend Mother and his prescience was limited and stopped upon Chani giving birth. Alia didn't have prescience, but had ancestral memories (both male and female). They were both incomplete Kwisatz Haderachs in these ways. It would be Leto II that would combine prescience and male and female ancestral memories when began implementing The Golden Path.

It's an example of something cool and creepy working on page, but translating to unintentionally funny on screen. Can Villeneuve make it work? She needs to be introduced, but beyond that, I find it more important how she's going to be portrayed in the Messiah film.

To the unobservant, she possesses the shape of a toddler with toddler movements and strange sensibilities. To the initiates, she would have the shadow of a toddler with the shifting image of an adult woman. To Paul, she would be his adult sister shifting through various actions and timelines, like Janus. To the Kwisatz Haterac, she is Paul's adult sister, Alia the Knife.

But remember, in the book: Interview with a Vampire, Claudia was 5 years old. They had to use an older child in order to get the subtle variations of Claudia dying, becoming vampire and aging for over a hundred years (I may be wrong on the age) and still being a child. They had to use Kirsten Dunst simply because an actual 5 year old does not have the maturity to portray her accurately. I wonder what they will do about Alia? She is a very deep character.

Alia was a tragic character. The complexity of Alia's character is extremely difficult to reasonably portray on the big screen so she needs to be simplified. And the important nuances don't really come out until the later novels anyway. Paul wasn't the Kwisatz Haderach, Paul was a failed Kwisatz Haderach. He could've been, but his own lack of strength was his failure. His son Leto II was the Kwisatz Haderach. Alia was a blend of "abomination" (bene gesserit definition, awakened to her ancestral memories prior to establishing her own identity) & failed Kwisatz Haderach (her ancestral memories included the male side).

There's a shot in the trailer of woman (seemingly Chani) walking through the desert in just robes, being bowed to... I think this is adult Alia, leaving a message for Paul in the future, which of course he can see in the present because of his powers.... This way we get to meet Alia, but not the baby version, even though it actually is.. ....

I'm worried. If Alia is only an embryo and vision for the entirety of Part 2, it will tank the movie in my opinion. That would be an unforgivable transgression and change to the source material. She is critical to the climax of the story, you don't just hand her Gom Jabbar to Jessica. Seriously, if Denis can put sandworms on the big screen but is not able to show us an odd 4-year old girl, its inexcusable. Alia is not a throw-away tangent character, she's actually the most intriguing human character in the entire series. Don't worry about the uncanny valley for Alia, that's the whole point of her character!

I Elaine, it's been a while, glad to see your take on the upcoming Dune II. Although I understand the fascination the audience has with the character Alia, due to her bizarre birth and odd psychic powers. What I don't understand is why Denis would put so much effort into her? She is just a minor character. Along the lines of Duncan Idaho. She does little to flesh out the canon narrative. I think I am intrigued. I want to see what Villeneuve has in mind. He's given me nothing but reason to believe he'll do the thing justice. The books don't really get into what she can do-and I expect the film won't either in so many words. But we'll likely come away from it with a deeper understanding of what she might be capable of. What great and terrible things she could do without the love and guidance of her mother and her brother…

I think the power of Alia is best shown by when other people encounter it. If Paul is having visions, and during the middle of one he receives a message from her as part of the vision, that's enough. You don't need any visual weirdness to show that. Same with the reverent mother whom's voices of the past Alia becomes a part of. We already have the sound for those voices happening in the movie, so just add Alia's voice to it. This makes Alia's ability to be in the past and the future obvious. No visual weirdness required. The water of life is a bit trickier. It's the odd one out. I personally think the 'essence' of a person can't be shown. And perhaps it's best not shown. Perhaps it's better to focus on the information that 'essence' is receiving, rather than what it looks like.

@@CharlesBiti If I'm not mistaken, her physical presence only becomes important when she's 4 years old, gets captured, stabs the Baron, escapes and takes part in the battle of Arrakeen. During this time she pretends to be a little girl. So having a regular 4 year old play her character should look just about right.

Alia is supposed to be about 5 to 7 years old when the Emperor lands on Dune to try and kill Paul and the Fremen. I know everyone here has read Dune at least 5 times, so you know how Alia is portrayed in the book. I am excited to see what Denis can accomplish and still maintain the quality of the film.

I hope We see her using the Voice to make sardaukar unalive each other. Also, how cool would it be if rabban gets executed by the Fremen? They could tie him up outside and let a sandstorm erode his body completely. That would be poetic imho. Put a heavy helmet on, so he is conscious and aware as long as possible.

[BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD] The TIME magazine quote makes me think there won’t be a 2-year time jump. Considering Alia is traumatized via the Water of Life ritual, and her presence hides while the most Jessica does is soothe her presence at that point in the novel… it would be a way to dispense with Alia in physical form altogether. She could ADVISE/persuade Jessica to murder the Baron instead of doing it herself. I’ll be disappointed because I firmly believe if we can have a believable CGI Rocket Raccoon with current technology, we can have a believable Alia. However, since Denis moved The Water of Life sequence to part 2, having a 2-year time jump right after that in the same film, it might feel weirder than how it would have felt having it between films. If there’s no time jump, then Paul & Chani’s first son & his subsequent murder will also be cut.

I have read the first series Dune books several times, and I keep hearing explanations that don't match what's written in the books in respect of the Bene Gesserit ritual that turns one into a Reverend Mother. They gain access to the memories of all the previous reverend mothers, not those of their female line. That's quite clear in the first book. Paul does not get this gift; that's also quite clear. There is no reason to suppose that Alia would get this gift either, but yet, in Dune Messiah, Herbert clearly departs from his own plot explanation and puts even the Baron into her accessible personalities, which makes no sense, as female Bene Gesserit reverend mothers can only look down the female line. Full access to all personas from both lines first manifests in Paul's children by Chani in the final scene in Dune Messiah when Paul has to fight the face dancer assassin; this then becomes a trope in subsequent novels, but it's one of the flaws in world creation in Herbert's first two books.

You can't fully adapt dune in below 6hrs. The idea is there. But without 16+ hrs just can't blame him. Cuts, simplifications etc are a must. For now he was very respectful, very intelligent.

I was never totally clear why she undertook the Spice Agony knowing she was pregnant. Was it the only opportunity she would have to be their Reverend Mother and she knew what would happen to her unborn child? I find it hard to believe she wouldn't know the effects, in which case it makes her decision very selfish and immoral as far as I can tell. Was there no time to give birth before the current Mother died? Unless she saw the results as a good thing, but we know what ultimately happens to Alia so I don't think it was. If her Bene Gessurit training allows her to have the control over her body and it's processes down to a cell then could she not have kept the Spice from the fetus? I would appreciate any feedback on this.
