In this video I'll be going over my experience of sleeping with my mouth taped shut for 30 days. It was an interesting experience, semi-based on internet research, so we'll see how it goes.

I started mouth-taping around April, and now I tape my mouth probably 3-4x a week, having successfully trained myself to sleep with my mouth closed. This change in breathing has carried over into the daytime and has helped make mask-wearing for COVID much more comfortable. His assessments are pretty accurate with my own. I highly suggest people give it a try. The first couple nights may suck, and you may not wear it for the entire night, but eventually your nose adapts. I'm breathing better through my nose than ever, and I've had nasal problems my whole life.

breathing though your nose during the day is *quite* important. There are quite a few people who also breath through their mouth which will lead to a bunch of negative side effects. It is well documented that mouth breathing adults are more likely to experience sleep disordered breathing, fatigue, decreased productivity and poorer quality of life than those who nasal-breathe. To mention a few; Importance of Nitric Oxide, negative Effect of Low Tongue Position, Postural Problems ...

Ali, I am a long time fan. The dentist in me says: While awake, it is perfectly normal for your teeth to be disengaged (Check out Vertical dimension of rest) yet your lips are supposed to remain competent (closed enough to allow for adequate nasal breathing). If not, the first step is to check with an ENT specialist to rule out Nasopharyngeal anatomical challenges or pathologies. As a patient of sleep disorders: I am glad that are diving into this issue to raise awareness about the quality of breathing during sleep. Totally relatable. Wish you all the best.

As someone with mild sleep apnea, and many years of being blocked up, I found using hayfever nasal spray and nasal strips worked to open up your nostrils over time. Add in working out, as you should always breath through your nose, you end up learning to breath through your nose naturally. Sleep has improved over the last 4 years doing this, which I track via my fitbit but can feel the improvement too

Great video! This actually solved my sleep apnea and that of people I know. One friend had cardiac arrhythmia that completely went into remission just with the tape trick. The thing is you don't actually have to buy those "sleep specific" tapes. There are many medical tapes out there that are breathable and 1/5th the cost.

After listening to a couple podcasts/videos with James Nestor a couple years ago, I started my nighttime nose breathing routine using blue painter’s tape. Small vertical strip from a 1” roll works great. Sticky enough that it rarely comes off during the night and has caused no skin issues. The vertical orientation leaves little gaps at edges of the mouth if I need to talk through the tape. Wife thinks I’m bonkers, but it really prevents nighttime dry mouth. Also trying to focus on nose breathing when I exercise. Have used the same taping routine a couple of times for that, but it’s not something I’ve done regularly. Considering trying that again.

Weirdly, I just started listening to the audiobook 'Breath' by James Nestor, which basically explores the whole mouth breathing vs nose breathing debate.. I'm only a couple of hours into it but so far it's been really interesting if you wanted to look into this even further! Just a funny coincidence that this video would be posted right after I picked the book up... but between it and this video, definitely considering picking up some of those stickers...

I did this about a year ago myself for a while. I wanted to try something, as I always woke up feeling groggy. I found it worked, but just fell out of the habit (mainly due to my firstborn coming along) I was cheap and just used bandaging tape. Worked fine for me and I definitely felt more alert in the most part.

There also is evidence that the shape of your face changes depending on whether you're a mouth or a nose breather! Like your cheekbones, jawline and eyes will develop a lot better and look more prominent when you have your mouth closed most of the time! It would be interesting if you would keep it up and update on that as well!! :) Great and helpful video as always! Thank you!!

I’ve been doing this about a month. And I do have sleep apnea but I believe it’s helping me, even though I wear a mouthguard. I don’t wake up with any more headaches, I don’t wake up with dry mouth or terrible morning breath The real test is to check to see if my apnea is better. I have my mouthguard adjusted and I am going to follow up with our apnea home test. That will indicate if my apnea is better, but overall I do wake up more refreshed, no bad breath and No morning headaches

I have severe sleep apnea bc my airways through my nose are really small (I’m not overweight or anything essentially.) I got a CPAP last year and it has helped a lot. Now I’m forced to breathe through my nose at night, and it’s epic. Without my CPAP I breathe through my mouth and snore extremely loudly. I wake up with a dry mouth and throat. So yeah, breathing through your nose is way better than breathing through your mouth. It really really helps, not to mention you won’t be a mouth breather lol

I used to be a mouth breather and tried mouth taping in my sleep. But I hated it because I have eczema on my mouth and taping caused me to drool in my sleep which made my skin so irritated. The tape also never stayed on. I got a laser tongue tie release and now I can easily nasal breathe. The surgery wasn't cheap, but it was worth it (more so than mouth taping). I am able to sleep with my mouth closed now thanks to the procedure.

As someone who breathes through their mouth when sleeping, I've tried taping my mouth shut (running this experiment multiple times). For me, it makes me wake up in the middle of the night a couple of times because my brain defaults to breathing through my mouth - but because my mouth is shut, I'm not getting any oxygen so it makes me wake up so I don't suffocate. Maybe I have not done it for long enough but I can tell my body is just too used to breathing through my mouth. I will probably try it again in the future more consistently but if it goes on for too long I'm just gonna leave it at that. I'd rather have a full nights sleep by mouth-breathing instead of continually interrupted sleep when nose-breathing.

It is possible that you have a nasal deviation, that means your nose probably have 60% efficiency due to one side being block. That is why you automatically use your mouth to breath. Maybe a septoplasty is what you really need... instead of taping it.
