Alias Basics: Autostudio Hotkeys

I am no longer able to find this Corsair keyboard with 18 G keys. The current K95 only has 6 G keys, which sucks. Anyone has any means of getting these?

Thanks for this video, Raymundo! I invested the time in the beginning and set up my Hotkeys, Interface and Marking menu based on your approach. No regrets so far! One thing I am struggling with is the fact that the tool presets constantly change, and I haven't figured out yet how and why Alias is doing it. Sometimes after using a surface or align tool, the changes I made are saved and sometimes not, messing with my setup. You have an idea how to mitigate that problem? Thanks!

Yeah, it’s a super weird sort of workflow so it makes sense why your confused. So basically when you initially start the tool, if you change the settings before starting the action, the tool will save the changes for next time you use it. If you first use the tool then change the settings and updates the command, it will keep your initial settings. So an easy way to remember this is that Alia’s will remember your setting before you start the action not after. Also you can change the settings by activating the tool, changing what you want, and then closing the tool again, without even using it, then the next time you activate it those setting will stay in the memory. That’s sort of how I set up my tools. So if I run us through a workflow, let’s say I activate my 3x3 square tool, if I wanted to change it so it’s 4x4 just that one time, I would activate the tool, select the curves, then once built change the degrees. If I wanted the change to stay for that session, I would click on my tool, change it to 4x4 deg, then click on the first curve. If I wanted to make that change permanent, so next time I start alias it’s always 4x4, you should re-save your preferences at that moment. The only problem with that is you might have made a temporary change on another tool that you didn’t want to make permanent. So in my own workflow, when I know I want to make a permanent change, I open a new Alia’s session, activate the tool, make the changes, close the tool, activate it again to make sure it loads up with the changes, then save the preferences.

Can't seem to import your hotkeys into 2024.1? Maybe I don't fully understand how to do this or the file isn't fully compatible with 2024.1.

Piao Rou no my alignments are mapped to extra g keys. The x I think is not mapped to anything.

Thank you for your great tutorials. Very appreciated. I seem to have a problem with the mouse sensitivity only with when Zooming around the model. Do you happen to know how to change this? Ive looked around and I cant seem to find it.

Yovan Vujacic select an object and press alt L to reset the zoom scale, I think

In 2024.1, importing the 2022 pref set .aps file from handlebar's website, none of the hotkeys get imported. The marking menus, interface colors and prefs do import. I was more interested in the hotkey setup workflow. Not sure why this process isn't importing all hotkeys. Any idea anyone?

Piao Rou its a Corsair k95 rgb keyboard, not sure if they make it with so many g keys anymore.

Insightful as always! What are your thoughts on Poly Modelling as a tool in the automotive surfacing workflow?

I think it can be used in some circumstances. I myself have polymodeled quick exteriors for car design studios. They have a quick turnaround time but to me, are just digital clay substitutes. You would still need to resurface them properly in nurbs, not only for highlight control but down the production pipeline. The time you save with speed get's eaten up by the time it takes to resurface it. So to me it seems like a waste but in some studios it makes sense for their workflow.

If you look at the object display menu in the menu bar, next to the command you can see the hotkeys, visible is shift H, invisible is shift ctrl H, i have that macrod into a key

Great video, thanks man! I have used rhino for so many years and i used all kind of hotkeys for my workflow, but now i am struggling with the Cluch keys! I know it may sound silly, but how would you use your hot keys when you have to constantly have 2 of your fingers on Alt, Ctrl and Shift. I wish there was a way to change and simplify them! is there really?

Use a 5 button mouse and a small software to map them. You can just alt, ctr, shift on your mouse.

Are the hotkey preferences only available for PC? I'm having troubles loading up your preference set, the hot keys aren't there. Any suggestions how to fix?

PopcornSticker I do it on purpose. But you can change it in draw style I think. I just think it’s distracting when it comes to seeing the full design in curves

Hey! Great video. I have one question to it. Even though you use hotkeys in 2.30s when u are making a fillet, the option window (Surface Fillet Option) pop out before u make it. How can i achieve this effect? I mean in case of fillets i want to have it under the button to not search for it, but every case is diffrent and it will be nice if I can every time change values.

I'm not exactly sure why but my fillets always makes the menu pop up.

i was facing the same issue. I dont know if u figured it out but double click on any tool to open the tool options. In my case is popped on the extreme right top of screen in minimized mode, so u just have to tap at it

Mauri Samp I still use marking menus. I don't add any more though, cause once you start to have a bunch in the same direction it's more time consuming than a keyboard.

What is your opinion about Speedform?

It's very typical to the standard one, the only things I added was to select hulls and select based on shader. The rest of them are the standard ones, just rearranged a bit.

I'm not a fan, I have never seen any model from that software I would consider good. Not enough highlight control and for the time and results, might as well use polygons.

I've tried for so long to get into Alias but I guess my years of NX work has been etched too hard into my head.

RingoFreakingStarr I think NX is awesome too. It has the control you need for automotive sculpting, if I didn't use Alias I would go to NX.
