After the executioner levered open the trap door and Alice got hanged, the theater went completely black (to that buzzing sound in the song). A moment later, Alice reappeared on stage in a white top hat and tails singing "(We've Still Got a) Long Way to Go" from the "Love It To Death" album, high-kicking across the stage. Let me tell you, it was electrifying! THE best R&R theatre ever! What a great show.

Most of us had just became teenagers when this album dropped, gone were the childhood games and things, we just became a teenager. Most of us just began growing our hair long, a remnant of the hippies (who were still around). We started buying our own albums, instead of listening to our bigger brother’s records, on his stereo. We got our own stereo. We got money to spend on what we wanted. And we spent time in record stores flipping through albums on what we wanted to buy, and this album Killer was one of the first group of albums we bought. I think that’s why this album means so much to us because it came out at a very important time of our young lives. Now we’re old farts thinking of all the wild stuff we did, and seen, and accomplished. This was an important milestone point of our life.

The story unfolds through music and sound: you hear the dying wails of the victim, the priest praying in Latin over the victim (or is it over the killer walking the last mile?), and then, you hear the trap of the gallows open and the killer's body fall. And then, just for a split second before death overwhelms the killer, you can hear the rope tightening around his neck. It's those tiny little touches that many people miss that make this such a great track. And of course when this was performed onstage, Alice was hanged at the end. No one else was doing anything like this. Thanks so much for diving into this great album. Alice's deep tracks deserve more attention from reactors, well done for leading the way.

This is the artist that began the big theatrical stage performances that are just expected by fans these days. Before Alice, they just didn't exist. To see an actual Alice Cooper concert in the early 70s was something special that you weren't likely to forget or take for granted. I know I haven't. He staged his own hanging in this concert tour. The next song in the set, if I remember correctly, was "Halo of Flies".

Can’t thank you enough Chod for doing this. This was a treat. Most Reactors do Schools out or Eighteen or Poison. The deeper stuff is his best stuff for sure. My fav. Is Steven. The musical changes in this song are great!

The impact on music (glam, punk, etc) and the concept of rock theatre and concert stage shows can hardly be overestimated. Another revolutionary album with major impact (on artists including Bowie, Talking Heads, U2, Coldplay, etc etc) and that pointed the way to entire new musical genres is "Another Green World" by Brian Eno. It is one of the few albums ("Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis comes to mind) that expanded the concept of what music could be and could do. It knocked my head sideways (in the best way) when I first heard it and is regarded today as a masterpiece.
@marcribe64832 жыл бұрын
I gotta say, there is a joy at watching you listening and understanding the artistic statements being made on an album such as this. Alice Cooper during 1971-1973 was every early teenager's rock star. Power chords with theatre, something never done, certainly not at that level. The live shows were shocking to the older hippies that didn't get it or wouldn't bother with it. Your comments after listening is generally always spot on and very well articulated. I would suggest, should you continue the Alice Cooper Band trail, to go backwards one album and do Love You To Death (also from 1971). Then skip to School's Out (1972) and finally Billion Dollars Babies (1973). These four albums are the holy grail of Alice Cooper. Other albums vary from nice to lukewarm. By 1974 the band had ended their tenure and Alice Cooper the solo artist begins (his real name is Vincent Furnier by the way). Thank you for doing this album. It made me smile.

Excellent Chod! I subscribed to your channel because you did the whole Killer album! This was a great choice for your first whole album reaction. I bought the vinyl of this in the early 70s and just dug the shit out of it! My high school band covered a lot of Alice Cooper songs. Some of them are hard to figure out and to play, but they are a blast to play. In the stage show the last song concluded with the Alice character being hung. I think he started shock rock. The original vinyl even came with a poster of Alice being hung, I think I still have that. Now you need to explore other early Alice albums like the previous album Love It to Death and Billion Dollar Babies and Muscle of Love. They are all great progressive/shock rock.

Background: Frank Zappa is credited with giving Alice Cooper his first "break". As the story goes Frank saw Alice play and wanted to sign him immediately. Alice recalls that "Frank said, ‘Anybody that can clear a room that quick, I’ve got to sign.'” Blessings.

My introduction to Alice was "Billion Dollar Babies," 2 years after this album. I purchased it with what precious few funds my 15-year-old self could beg, borrow or steal, and proceeded to play the crap out of it for many weeks. Every song--"Hello Hooray," "Billion Dollar Babies,"" "Elected," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," etc."-- is a banger, both instrumentally and in terms of Alice showing his vocal range and just wailing his heart out with great emotion. For example, I love the smarmy, sinister tone he takes on when he starts out in a sly, almost-whispered snarl, then a full-throated yell in "Elected": "I never lied to ya; I've always been cool...I wanna BE ELECTED!!! Alice, MC5, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Grand Funk...a lot of great rock artists came from my hometown area, Metro Detroit.

It makes sense to react to a whole Alice Cooper album because most of his albums are concept albums that tell a story about the evil character Alice Cooper (not the real person, he's a nice guy). You can see that when you watch him acting and singing on stage. At the of his concerts after introducing the band members he sometimes says: "And playing the role of Alice Cooper tonight: me!"

Too bad our parents only paid attention to the sound & look, but ignored the content! You also have to take into consideration that this album came out right in the middle of the peace & love era. It showed the dark side of humanity when all these other bands were running around with flowers in their hair. At it's time, it was very much the opposite the status quo. Very anti hippie.. I always though that the Punk movement that hatched in the late 70s actually started with this band.

Loved this album, and "Schools Out". Played the hell out of both cassettes in my first car. I was going thru a lot that was maybe just magnified by Teen Angst, but it helped with that anxiety. Jethro Tull's THICK AS A BRICK is the consummate 'concept album'.
