Absolutely love this , and why wouldn't I ? Phil and Gary combine so well. Geniuses both , in different ways. Loved that you heard Empty Rooms at the end. Gary was a very underrated songwriter and vocalist I always felt. As to you wondering where Gary Moore stands in the pantheon of great guitarists , I will just leave you with this ...Very lucky to catch Gary at a Marquee Club , London , gig to celebrate the Back on The Streets album. He put together a hell of a band . A young blonde guy came and stood by us with his girlfriend, to watch the great man up close. It was Randy Rhoads, who had just joined Ozzy's Blizzard of Oz !! A guitarists guitar player for sure , and probably the best all round player ever. He could play anything. Much missed ! RIP Phil and Mooro ❤❤

Nick…cant wait to you get to Thin Lizzy/Gary Moore live stuff…they blew everybody off stage all through the 70s and 80s. The musicality is just brutal. There is no other hard rock band that can deliver anything from hard rock to jazz/fusion to reggae to calypso. They could do anything. When it comes to Gary Moore…saw him loads of times live. Gary live is on another level. His studio-albums are good, but to see him do a 10 minute version of Empty Rooms live…..look it up on you tube. Empty Rooms 1987 Stockholm Sweden. This IS your new favorite guitar player. No one will ever play with more passion, fire and emotion than Gary Moore.

Thanks for another marathon. Gary Moore and Mark Knopfler once appeared on a number one single together. Gary got fusion instrumentals out of his system playing with Colosseum II, and the Back on the Streets album also has a number of them. Flight of the Snow Moose, with Simon Phillips on drums is amazing. There is BBC footage of Gary with Colosseum II which is worth a look. I magine a lot of Gary fans will have been frustrated that the marathon did not include live versions of the Parisienne Walkways and Empty Rooms where Gary really takes off. Empty Rooms was released in several versions across a couple of albums in an effort to make it a hit, which it finally became in the UK. John Sykes of Whitesnake was heavily influenced by Gary.

Also Nick, Gary Moore was far more than just a rock guitarist. In the late 70s, he wandered off and joined a formidable jazzrock band called Colosseum 2. One of the reasons he joined them he said in an interview was to push himself as a guitarist - to take himself out of his comfort zone and see if he could be viewed as an equal with some amazing musicians in the band. Did he succeed? Mate.....you have to listen to to their album War Dance. I cant wait to see your face light up.

And this is why Nick, the Thin Men were unique. Phil simply refused to be pigeon holed. Take My Sarah as an example. Here we find Phil singing about his baby girl Sarah. Lyrically he's being very sentimental but it never comes across as mushy. Not only that but the band musically, would compliment his words perfectly. How many other so called "hard rock" bands would ever have done the same thing? Almost none. Their self image wouldnt have allowed for it and their fans wouldn't have gone for it either. But Lizzy were so so different - and their fans loved them for it Philo was also a poet, which was something else that helped set the band apart from their contemporaries. He had a real gift for telling a story, in poetic terms in just a few lines - no easy feat. And the words he would choose were words that painted very strong images in the listeners mind. Parisienne Walkways is a perfect example. We read the words and we are immediately transported to Paris, post World War 2. See below. "I remember Paris in '49 The Champs-Élysées, Saint Michelle and old Beaujolais wine And I recall that you were mine In those Parisienne days Looking back at the photographs Those summer days spent outside corner cafes Oh, I could write you paragraphs About my old Parisienne days". How cool is that Nick?? And the best thing is that there is so much more to come. Enjoy enjoy.

Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore…huge everywhere but America. But all the musicians from the US knows them….but there is so much for you to understand here; Gary Moore and all the guitarists in Lizzy are Adrian Smiths biggest influence. Gary Moore is the fav guitarist of John Norum of Europe, Kirk Hammett from Metallica, Vivian Campbell from Dio/Def Leppard to name a few. Their influence is everywhere. Kirk Hammett owns Gary Moores Les Paul. Metallica got the original Thin Lizzy stage sign in their rehearsal room, John Norum’s got Gary’s white strat, etc etc etc

A lot of bad luck for the band. Big tours were disrupted or cancelled and issues with drink and later drugs all conspired to hinder them. If you listen to the music it is so enduring and timeless. They were always blessed with great guitarists but, IMO, Lynott and Downey are so important to Lizzy's sound. Downey has been overlooked and overlooked as a great drummer throughout his career. You can listen to Downey in the background of any Lizzy track and its just sublime how his drumming fits in. Like 'cement holding bricks together' but, 'smooth as a gravy sandwich'. My favorite band for nearly 45 years and I never get sick of listening to them. Lynott is as great a performer as any of his contemporaries and hopefully his talent and brilliance will be rediscovered so he gets the acclaim he deserves. Underappreciated and overlooked band, but its great to hear new converts like you get on board Cheers

Both Phil (Thin Lizzy) and Gary are extremely underrated, no question. Great marathon! In terms of the 2 Gary songs I have to add that in terms of “Parisienne Walkways” you definitely will have to do a live version of it. There are sooooo many versions of this song on KZbin, all different because he never played it the same way twice. Only one I believe is with Phil though, recorded on Gary’s homecoming concert in Belfast in late 1984, a great concert/documentary btw! My personal favorite version is one of his last performances on the Jazz Festival in Montreaux in 2010! And on “Bloods” I have to add that it’s one of two very very autobiographical songs. If you listen closer to the lyrics you will notice that. The other one is “Business as usual” btw from his 1997 album “Dark days in Paradise”

Sorry to say but you picked the wrong version of the Gary Moore anthem Parisienne Walkways. You should have picked one of the live versions for example the one with Phil Lynott! Blood of Emeralds was a song that was too good to not include on his 1989 After The War album even though it clearly stands out. The song is very much Celtic/irish influenced which was the theme for his 1987 album Wild Frontier. Gary never wanted to reapeat himself and since Wild Frontier became a huge success that was the biggest reason for the next album to go in another direction. You gotta do Parisienne Walkways live and also The Messiah Will Come Again live when Gary makes the guitar sing like only he could!! Also check out The Prohpet a underestimated song and Victims of the Future!

Oh, and on my favorite song “Empty Rooms” is kind of the same as “Parisienne Walkways”, you HAVE to listen to the live version with this amazing intro called “So far away”. Best version here for me is the one from one of his best concerts ever, the 1987 concert in Stockholm. The song was released actually already on the prior album to “Run for cover” in 1983 on the “Victims of the Future” album. A longer version that I like better actually. The live version is a combination of both versions. And it’s funny you mentioned Europe, because they were big big fans of Gary, as is Tommy Johansson now, if you don’t know who that is look him up here on KZbin, you will find ”something” 😅

I never quite all the comments about Thin Lizzy being under rated. They were pretty successful in the UK and toured the US and elsewhere. They didn't become the huge band they probably should have been due to Lynott's and Gorham's drug addiction and the infighting which led to frequent line up changes. This is evident in the dramatic decline in the quality of their output after Black Rose.
