Jerry’s solo album Degradation trip rules and has a lot of really dark depressing shit that sounds amazing, the full version of the album is 25 track and it’s amazing, if you haven’t heard it and love depressing AIC stuff it’s a must listen obviously because Jerry was the primary songwriter for AIC, so many great lyrics on that album too.

Me. I'm still listening. This song hits me like no other AIC Unplugged song. I'll wake up in the mornings & my mind immediately hears Layne & Jerry's haunting harmonization of this song, especially their humming. So, I have to get my fix & play this song over & over. I love when Jerry looks up from his guitar & over at Layne, like "Wow, we sound so good". Because they did. They certainly did. And they are sorely missed. 💔

@@bcrwarlock1974 Jerry dedicates a different song to Layne. Black Gives Way to Blue is Layne's song. This song is for Jerry's brother David. They grew up apart because their parents divorced. Jerry stayed with his mom and David stayed with his dad. We owe a lot to David and Sean. During Jerry's darkest battles with addiction, they staged an intervention and practically dragged Jerry to get help.

i wholeheartedly agree 100%. I stated listening to them in 1990 and have always, this fuking band was my fav over the rest, im an original generation X grunge, alternative, druggie (labels, labels!!!)AIC was the best. To have this unplugged performance sound as righteous as it does vocals, guitars, drums its rare. I personally wasnt into unplugged back then, because so many bands really sounded like shit. AIC in my opinion played the BEST unplugged. that was an era you just had to be there, and us ones that were, we were ridiculed back then for our music clothes and non conformist attitude of fuck yeah, funny how i was given such a hard time for being my own thing then as years go on grunge was my generations thing!!! it wasnt liked at all, we were just being ourselfs, didnt follow the norm, our music we loved others didnt give a chance until decades down the road. i was mezmerized by AIC in 90 and that voice is still mezmerizing an "origanal ol skool alternative".. (fuking labels)

Heck no! This band would not be what they are without Jerry's vocals. Layne had that high pitch and Jerry was perfect with his vocals bringing the tone right back down. I was telling my son that there harmonizing is what sets this band apart from other rock bands. Art at it's finest!

This song has tricky vocal harmonies, Layne and Jerry sort of keep switching their roles in the harmony in comparison to how people would do this harmony. I guess this is one reason why people keep mistaking one voice for the other in their songs and why people hear doubling on their tracks where there isn't any. It might also have been a way for them to sing together in a way that no one was merely doing backing vocals. Most of the time, this band doesn't have a frontman, it's a band with two singers. We are pretty lucky that they did Unplugged, it really helps people to appreciate their intricate compositions, and also helps with learning to sing their stuff properly for covers.

This song makes me think of my little brother, my best friend in childhood. we both partied hard in our 20’s but became lost in our own separate worlds of drugs… finally both becoming iv addicts. He is a remarkably talented self taught musician & always taught me about the best music. After a major bacterial infection destroyed one of his heart valves we both got clean. We recently had an argument & I really worry about him, if he was to relapse his heart is so damaged he wouldn’t likely survive. Scott I’m sending this to you through the airwaves. I love u little brother & im sorry we argued last time we spoke. I’m so proud of you & your recovery!! Life is too fragile to quarrel with one another 😢💕

I saw an interview with the band where they said that the rehearsals went so poorly that Mike and Sean thought they were going to have to cancel. Jerry was supposedly the only one that thought Layne still had it in him. That look seems to be Jerry relishing the decision to give Layne the chance. In my opinion, one of the best decisions ever made in music. Despite Layne's frail look, and messing up at least one song, this performance is one of the most haunting concerts of all time. It's just unbelievable.

Most fans know that Layne was the one who layered most vocal harmonies, but Jerry seems to have some talent in hearing harmonies as well. He knew exactly how to keep a melody and flavor it up in a way that didn't sound weird with Layne's voice. 4:13-4:24 is a good reference of how he went from a base melody, to a higher one, and back to the base melody where Layne's overtones matched it. These two could've been the S&G of grunge, well they are, I don't think any duo in the grunge scene did this.

Generation X era music is the absolute best of any era. Yes, better than the 60’s and 70’s too.

I remember when this came out. It felt like the whole "grunge" trend was on its last days, after Cobain's death and a lot of good bands started imploding and being replaced by really terrible opportunistic radio-friendly cheap versions. And they came in and knocked it out of the park. As Alice always did. Soundgarden was the same. Even as both bands eventually collapsed, they never sucked.

Whoever mixed the audio on this is a genius. Go back and listen to some of the other unplugged performances. Pearl jam comes to mind where the drums and vocals are all you can really hear. Especially on Black. On this one everything just clicked and every single nuance of the music can be heard

Yea, the mixing for this unplugged is genius. I think the band itself had a part in the sound mix.

@Jack Burton a-fuckin-men. i wish we even still had good H in canada, around here its 50$ for 1 point of "synthetic heroin" (fentanyl) and you're only well for half as long at best. at least with morphine you get the pins and needles. tar is very rare. literally impossible to maintain a habit.

@@jimhardeea you actually really wish for that? How's family? Friends? Asking sincerely. Addiction is no joke to be around or grow up around, especially when one isn't even using...

Layne....taken WAY before his time. His voice will always move my Soul to higher ground❤️. Edit - A week and 19 years to the day this legend passed away and it's still beyond heartbreaking. 2021 and still no end of my AIC days in sight🤘🏻

Nellie Silvers That May be the most amazing explanation to how it feels listening to LS, when they harmonize a capella at the end it is ethereal.

Kevin Coady Thanks, hun. He's helped me through some tough times by listening to his lyrics. It helps to know that, no matter how alone in my addiction or anxiety I feel, there's others who understand. We share the same pain...as sad as it makes me that it's a downward spiral so many get lost in. Layne and Jerry's harmonisations are beautifully perfect. There'll never be any better

the talent is top notch, but can you imagine how good this unplugged could have been had it happened in 91'? crazy to think laynes literally aged 40 years here from from the drugs. in his prime , 90-93' , man , he was a force. it could have been next level.

It is so surreal how I sit here watching this video going through withdraw myself, sobbing cuz it seems like my emotion always flows through me during these times. Especially listening to music as deep as this. Three kids and a wife and im just praying for the day I finally make it through it. Regret from ever getting involved in the first place sorrow from the friends I have lost to the same problem but I refuse to let it be me.

Been listening to Layne since 2011 (12 years old) and I dont think i will ever stop. I know with age music tastes change, you change as a person. But this band.. Layne has changed me. I don't think i could ever lose my softspot for this man. i don't think i'll ever give up on celebrating his life. I love you Layne. I'm sorry you couldn't be saved.

I just realized that I found them at 8 years old. My babysitter played them a lot. My 14 year sister was into Nirvana and my father was super into Metallica and Pearl Jam. As a family we listened to as much grunge in the 90s as we did Led Zeppelin or The Doors. I loved our blues Sundays. My father just loved rock and blues guitar.
