Alot of the lyrics to me in not just this song,but alot of the post Layne music,seem to me as if he's talking to Layne. I know he misses him, sometimes the words even seem like he's angry with him for leaving, which i am at times too and I didn't even know the man. This has always been my favorite band, being a person in recovery I can relate to the whole vibe of the music, Layne and I were about the same age and going through the same thing, unfortunately he didn't make it through. God bless you Jerry and the boys, you are not alone in your loss, bless all my brothers and sisters in Chains as well. 😉

Same here. I had to force myself to sit and listen through twice. Now, a year later, it's my favorite AIC album. And that's saying a lot because I've listened to all of them over and over for years. RF has the best mix of haunting, creepy sounds and mellow, melodic sections that puts me in a unique state of mind. Just a masterclass album from a veteran rock band.

Oh man, I have a great connection to this song. Bought the CD the second it came out, I'm a big hiker/mountaineer in Colorado and had this song in my head as I climbed across the Marron Bells Traverse in my quest to (successfully) climb all the 14000 footers in the state right? SO, there are three "challenges" on the traverse, each between 5-5.4 on YDS scale which is basically straight up climbing and I had no ropes. I had done many things in a similar vein and was fine, even ecstatic on the others (crestones, kasparov, knife edge on Capitol, cables on Longs pk etc. etc.) but something about this one climb got to me and I froze...hanging off the second (arguably most difficult) challenge with nothing but air behind me going down thousands of feet. I damn near pissed myself. All of a sudden my mind latched on to the part of the song that comes in at 2:45, and I started to level out my thinking, and as it built up I made more and more progress until I was smiling and singing "grrriiiiiiinding griiiinding onnnnn" as I slowly completed the challenge. Before I knew it I was past the toughest part, and victory screaming at the top of my lungs as the main riff drops in like a doomsday asteroid at ~3:35 and I don't think I've ever felt as badass as I did in that moment. That part fueled me past my momentary paralysis, just grinding through the fear until I was literally (and figuratively) above it. Thank god for AIC. Ps: I know Ranier isnt in Colorado, work with me here.

I was honestly surprised they kept making music. They still kept their style fresh without layne, which really gave them that signature sound. But they kept it steady and good. I personally think AIC is the most underrated 90s rock band or grunge band as far as the big ones went.

Lyric Breakdown (disclaimer, some of these lines and verses may be incorrect): Some things last, sometimes you never get over: Around the mid-2000s, Alice in Chains realized they had an opinion to continue their band, or leave it alone with Layne's death like Led Zepplin Live in the past, you find out it's hard to stay sober: The popularity of drugs in the 80s and 90s were very bad.
