Like your review and you inspired me to look for one. I found a medium with frame fir$7.00 made in 1976 from a thrift store. I took the pack off the frame and took the old webbing off and used German straps with plastic clips that I sewed to the pack, sewed German webbing on the top of the frame for a carry handle, replaced the hip belt with a Molle one and mixed a 50 /50 of mineral spirites and pure silicone to apply to the nylon bag for waterproofing. Now I have an updated version of an old school backpack that will last a lifetime. Thank you for inspiring me!

I have a large ALICE pack and have found it to be relatively comfortable. My only complaint was where the upper frame came in contact with my shoulder blades and spine. I purchased some pipe insulation (the black foam kind) and put around the upper bar for extra padding and have used it to carry loads as high as 40 pounds for a three day hike with no issues. I’ve seen some folks complain about the waist belt but I’ve not had any issues there and I like the separation (better ventilation) that the pack has. It’s better than some other packs I own for warm muggy days. Saying that the frame and rucksack are tough is an understatement they’re almost bulletproof.

Yes, the small version does not have the three pockets on top and the middle pocket on the bottom is the same size as the others.

ALICE packs are a godsend, solid frame combined with rugged reliability. Relatively cheap these days because everybody is moving to MOLLE compatible systems, which often lead to injuries (especially terminator packs). You could always water/weather proof ALICE packs whereas something like a Terminator Pack is completely useless in that respect.

Great video, the only thing I have to say is you can't use this ruck without the frame. The small or med you can but not the large.

Thanks for the correction. I did get my descriptions tangled. To be more clear. The large ALICE, is the one in the video, The medium is similar to this minus the 3 pockets on top and a smaller center-bottom pouch, and the small is good ruck with no exterior pockets/pouches. We appreciate you catching our mistake in our description here. I hope this serves to clear it up. Thanks for watching and helping out!

I have my Dads old Canvas pack from 65 when he went to Nam. I prefer it to the 'modern' nylon crap the throw out there now. Get a small hole in it, sew it up with a needle and thread. Simple. Been using it since my first boy scout camp out in 68. Time to retire it now though. Getting a little thread bare.

The classic ALICE pack was the one used in Vietnam. The frames are different. On the original, rather than the frame slipping into a pocket on on top of the pack, the pack was strapped to the frame. You are correct in that the ALICE pack being displayed in this VIDEO is a more recent version. Actually, I liked the original ALICE pack in that I could move it to the upper or lower part of the frame keeping the heavy loads (AN/PRC 25 or 67) on the top portion and the C rations and other stuff in the pack strapped to the lower portion.

I just wanted to say thanks for this great detailed review of this piece of history, i was looking for a solid backpack for "goin into the woods" which is very strong and can handle some hard use. Normally i would go for some semi high-tech backpacks but this thing.. i don´t know, i felt in love with. Now Im gonna order a used alice pack (about 40$ here in Germany) so thanks and greetings from Berlin, Germany (sorry for my bad english :) )

Hi Dan, Was the Large rucksack changed to fit shoulder straps w/o the frame? In the 1980's, only the Medium ruck could be carried w/o a frame; the Large ruck didn't have attachment points for straps, but they were attached to the frame alone after the frame was attached to the ruck. The one I have from 1985 (not my TA 50--I bought this one at Clothing Sales on post) must be used with a frame. Maybe the design / construction changed after '85 but before the MOLLE system? As I recall, the Army was testing a new system in the '80's, which (I think) may have been the current version of individual load-carrying equipment.--RS

who knows the difference of a vietnam pack and a later model? give up? the vietnam pack has spring loaded buckles on the front. the later packs have a pull through buckle on them. lc1 vs lc2. they might have some other differences but that is the most obvious.

Hi. Thanks for the very informative video. It contained a lot of useful tips in a short amount of time. However, I do not agree with what you say in the last part. You say that the alice pack is a good choice for the money. I would rather pick a Lowe Alpine Sting or any other surplus 2000 era backpack since they are far more comfortable, modular and cost the same price. Best regards.

I am a volunteer in my country's national guard, within a few weeks we will have a 24 day exercise, i am not sure of the type of place we will have to spend those days, but at least 10 of them will be in a forest, i live in northern Europe, so the weather can be rainy, and especially at this time of year, hot and humid and can go to cold and humid really fast, i was wondering, i have a chance to buy the 110L alice pack for 35 euros, i just need to know is it rouged, will it not brake apart, can i trust it?

You're right, the hip belt leaves a lot to be desired. It doesn't come around the hips like it should to provide support and the buckle is plastic (not my favorite). I got a reconditioned md & lg for $50th. Too a year before they were delivered. One of the shoulder strap adjustment gripea does not hold properly. And you cannot just drop loose batteries in the pockets of the large pack or they will fall out the drain holes in the bottom. There is no support shelf on the bottom. I got them to go gold prospecting, metal detecting, camping, etc. I have degenerative disc disease in my neck and varicose veins in my legs. A school pack makes my upper back hurt in a particular place yet the ALICE with more weight in it does not. Never tried internal frame packs. What's the best way to cover the holes yet allow it to drain? What modifications would you make to an ALICE pack? Should I get a different pack? Should a different pack be used for different situations?...

I know this is months old but change out the ALICE frame with a newer MOLLE 1606AC (ALICE Compatible) frame. It is longer and will place the MOLLE hip belt on your hips! The ALICE frame was never designed to do this and was necessarily short to work with the rest of the ALICE LBE.

Thank you for the great review of the Alice pack. My Dad gave me one that was given to him and it looks like a brand new never used large alice pack with external frame. I was thinking about using it for backpacking and pig hunting. I have a single point harness for my AR and I was curious if you had any tips or recommendations for carrying the AR with this pack or if you know how to mount and AR on an Alice pack for transportation? Thanks!
@OmegaGear
@OmegaGear 10 жыл бұрын
The easiest thing to do from my perspective is to get a two point harness. One points are great for lots of tactical usefulness but require you to basically hold your gun at all times. In a military context that is a necessity. For the rest of us who are simply carrying them for hunting or sportshooting purposes, a two point is more advantagious. As for carrying it in your pack.....only if you broke it down to upper and lower and then stored them.

As others have said quite comfortable other than maybe kidney pad, however newer kidney pads can be purchased on amazon for around $10 that are made for MOLLE but on the review section on that product, you can rig them up to the ALICE pack. Often times, if you find something uncomfortable about the ALICE pack, you can easily and very affordably modify it to fit your needs. Hope it helps!

for general purpose, rugged use and being user friendly this pack in my opinion is unsurpassed. I have found nothing but plastic, cheap wannabes out there. $300 + for a technical bag. I am not knocking mountain climbers or ultralight backpacking, however, in regards to its pure or modified styles, the ALICE is unmatched in reliability.
