This song is actually a choir of Laynes singing. He recorded and overlapped at least 20 vocal tracks for this song, and it sounds like he gave each one their own unique style, yet they blend so well.

@@daytimelantern6570 I believe that you should have more empathy and understanding about what is the agony in which an addict live is. I have a 30 year old cousin who almost died of an overdose from using crack. when he was not on the drug, I asked him what made him have that miserable life and he always answered that it was to forget the pain he felt. His father left the family when he was a little boy and never recovered from the trauma. He grew up on the streets, left school and found comfort in drugs. This is not the best option one can live, but it is necessary to us to understand that each one deals with pain in different ways. For that experience I understand Layne.

@@spookyskeleton3845 Absolutely. AiC has massive Sabbath heavy/doom influence to this day. Cantrell's riffs and bends are highly reminiscent of Iommi's. Besides, AiC has this tendency of weird, haunting atmospheric layerings which add a lot more depth to the songs. Especially their heavier metal-oriented tunes. And that hymnal, gregorian chant-like dual vocal harmonies really stand out.

You are correct. People always consider Dirt their best album, but their self titled is my favorite (the "dog album"). It starts out with 3 absolute bangers (Grind, Brush Away, and Sludge Factory which is one of my favorites) and finishes with Over Now which is amazing. and their MTV Unplugged is the best Unplugged session of all time. I listen to Alice every single day. This band straight up saved my life. Interesting tidbit about the Unplugged session: about 30 mins before the show, Layne was super dope sick. He got stuff, shot up, and went out and put on one of the most iconic performances in the history of rock music. Dude was an absolute beast, despite being soooo fucked up on junk.

This song written by Layne reflects pure honesty of the pain when there is an abusive relationship between the mind and body. It helps those who struggle know they are not alone. Layne suffered with substance abuse. I battle anorexia. The specifics of the battle may be a different method, but the theme is the same...escape and hiding from oneself through self-destruction. This song helps me eat. This song keeps me alive.

I believe Layne had trouble dealing with a religious upbringing and the realities of living life. He makes references to only wanting to play and get on your knees time to pray. He also says it's the weight of my heart not the size making a reference to a person's heart being weighed against a feather to determine their afterlife. There is no greater despair than to have been made to believe you are irredeemable. It doesn't remove your belief it removes your hope. He is looking at his reflection and is destroyed by what he sees but a sinking ship cannot right itself.

A timeless, unique classic. AIC wasn't exactly mainstream, yet many of their biggest songs were commercial enough to have crossover appeal. "Man In The Box", "Them Bones", "Would", "No Excuses", and so on. But not this song. This song is for the misfits. The outsiders. The music nerds. The ones most people didn't understand. "Angry Chair" is a masterpiece.

Repeal Woman's Suffering Well, now, I agree except Janet deserved that honor...for decades. Listen to her best album, The Velvet Rope. I understand if you aren’t a soul/R&B fan, I totally do. I happen to love both great “black folks” music AND great rock from my generation, the best music came forth in the 90s. If nothing else, listen to Janet’s songs “Black Cat,” “Velvet Rope” (first track on the aforementioned album), “What About,” and “If.” All would very well qualify Ms. Jackson for the R&R HOF. As for AIC, it is fucking criminal that they’re not yet inducted! My favorite bands are: -Stone Temple Pilots (with Scott) -Queen (with Freddie) -Alice In Chains (with Layne) -Prince & The Revolution -Soundgarden (with Chris) -Queens of the Stoneage -The Doors (with Jim) -Journey (with Steve Perry) -Nirvana -Nine Inch Nails I love music more than any other artistic medium.

This song is so extreme in every way. The riffs, the lyrics, the stop and start rhythms, the darkness, the contrast of the darkness with the pseudo-light nihilist surrender of the chorus. It takes so much creativity and serious balls to write something like that and perform it with so much confidence, to say "I'm going to do something so weird and different but it will kick ass". Wish he was still here with us.
@kilerf8053
@kilerf8053 Жыл бұрын
I think the chorus is so "light" because it's about real relief coming from acceptance of his state, albeit the "I-I-I" reminds you that it doesn't mean he's free from it, it's kinda like relief of acceptance that you will die soon of some disease - you still have to die. Quite remarkable how something so simple/easy to play can be so original, complex, nuanced and good. I can't get enough, something beautiful about, something that inspires me instead of depressing. It's raw, real, not overly poetic (to the point you can't really relate). My favourite grunge song probably.

Many are talking about lyrics and I agree they are fantastic….but damn something about this song feels atmospheric in a strange way. It feels like a storm is about to strike and you are out in the middle of nowhere. This band is fucking amazing!

For me, it brings flashbacks from childhood and the Catholic church, and I only wish I could have been strung out on drugs back then. My life would have turned out much better..You can leave the Catholic church, but it never leaves you, and that is a fact!

@@IoiniEverson I remember being christened as a baby at the Catholic church and they sprinkled holy water on me--I was raised Catholic and abuse was an every day cycle. That forced cycle shut my mind down and I was on auto pilot, but now my mind is open and pretty much 'child like', as in a free spirit, but it took years to get there.

Someone wanna explain to me why these guys aren’t in the hall of fame yet? Same with maiden, NIИ, slayer, megadeth, Judas Priest, and Anthrax

One of my personal favourite songs from the album Dirt imo! Angry, dark, and haunting as fuck. This song helps me battle through the pain and depression.

Me animou ver que a maioria dos comentários são de Brasileiros... Amo essa banda, minha banda favorita. Jerry é uma inspiração pra mim. Deveriam vim fazer um show no Brasil novamente, ano passado fui no Judas Priest, só pra ver o Alice in Chains. Sou do Rio de Janeiro. 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷

I remember listening to this song for the first couple of times and I thought that at 1:37 he says "I don't mind the end" instead of "I don't mind it, yeah". In both ways it gives chills, man.
