My two favorite concerti in two blisteringly perfect performances. de Larrocha brings so much of her own to these works, making them new to me all over again. The Left Hand work is especially brilliant, and what heartrending lyricism she brings to the G Major 2nd movement! And she understands the Latin influences in the 1st movement such as I've never heard anywhere else. Wonderful! Thank you, fans!

This is my go-to recording of both of these pieces. My teacher Julianne McLean used to say she was “five foot nothing,” with stubby fingers and amazing sound. This recording is much better than the later one of hers that I have on CD, no question, although that one is also beautiful but just not quite the same.

I remember hearing the broadcast of this performance back when NPR used to air live NYPO performances weekly…If the recording of this performance was found, there have to be many others by Larrocha in the archives somewhere, as she performed with this orchestra so often; the G major is similar to her wonderful Decca recording, but this version of the Left hand concerto is one powerhouse of a performance!!! She also played both concertos in Wash, DC, around the same time and I regret not attending…

Pianist Arthur Rubinstein said there is no greatest pianist and that to say that was a nonsense but I think Alicia de Larrocha broke the rule.
