Margo Beloved: Thank you for the upload! It's wonderful! But you should specify that Maurice Ravel wrote his G major piano concerto FOR Marguerite Long, and dedicated it to her. Marguerite Long worked with Maurice Ravel on the interpretation of this concerto. That is why Marguerite Long premiered the concerto. On the first page of the concerto is written: "A Marguerite Long," (To Marguerite Long). French pianist Monique Duphil, who studied with Marguerite Long for many years, and who worked on this concerto with Long, will be performing this work soon (Sept. 2018), with the Philippines Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Fukumura.

I love the interpretation of the first movement. Many modern versions are faster, but I think it swings more at this tempo. The orchestra plays with real feeling.

She premiered this concerto. Ravel was too exhausted and asked his friend the accomplished Ms. Long to fill in. Ravel dedicated on of the pieces in Le Tombeau de Couperin to Ms. Long's late husband who died in battle in WWI.

Actually, Ravel wrote this concerto FOR Marguerite Long, and dedicated it to her, that is the reason why she premiered this concerto. If you look at the score, on the first page, it says "A Marguerite Long" (To M. Long). I know this first hand, because my mother, pianist Monique Duphil, studied with Long in Paris for many years, and actually learned this concerto under M. Long's tutelage! The very sad thing about Long's husband, is that they got married, and shortly afterwards, he went to war, where he was very soon killed. Marguerite Long therefore lost her husband not long after being married, and she went through a very difficult period overcoming this loss. She remained a widow for the rest of her life...

today everything is about speed, too hectic... everyone should listen to her elegant style.

But also in 1932, when (at around 58) she (and de Freitas Branco) olayed this rather faster?

This may be the closest interpretation that Ravel wanted to since she worked with Ravel personally.

Should the trills not be connected in the cadenza? Most recordings I’ve heard do, but this and perlemuters do not.

And to think she was in her 70s when this was recorded! Perhaps in Ravel's time her technique was more virtuoso.
