Ivankov spells it out perfectly, the Okama way is to be whatever you want; man, woman, even a fairy, as long as you are true to yourself. When Bon says "Oh come my way" he's actually saying "Okama way" as in his way of living for his beliefs and himself. As I mentioned in another post, most of what Ivankov and Bon Clay say is improperly translated to "trans" or similar, losing the meaning behind Okama because some feel "Okama" is a harmful stereotype.

As for the forced transition. People forget that Ivankov and other prisoners know what's happening in Impel Down and of other prisoners. It could be that the person was specifically "spirited away" to 5.5 because Ivankov and them knew they were actually living a lie. I don't agree with the theory that Ivankov can "sense" people wanting to have their gendered swapped.

Funny thing, Death Wink is not a special power. Just like Mihawk can create air slashes with his swords (like when he cut Don Krieg's ship), Ivankov can create air blasts with his winks thanks to his strong mascara. Ivankov is not a traditionally good person. He's not a bad person either, but he lives in a pirate world ruled by a corrupt government, he would think nothing of disregarding the bodily autonomy of someone who tried to murder him to teach them a lesson, just like he would think very little of killing him in retaliation. Especially since Ivankov will help people find their true self which means he would help this guy become a man again if he apologised for the attack. It's not *good* mind you, especially considering Ivan is too strong to be threatened by this guy, it would be like taking revenge on an aggressive 10 years old, but like most people in this show, Ivan is operating in a grey area. I do agree that it feels weird when that grey area starts touching issues of gender and sexuality probably because it looks more real to us so it's always a strange feeling.

Ivankov’s whole speech about miracles is so powerful. He is by and large one of if not the goofiest characters in One Piece yet that doesn’t detract from the points he makes or the seriousness of that lecture to Bon-chan. That and the hallway talk leading up to where Luffy’s being kept. Despite his stage presence and being a diva, Iva’s not so out of touch with the situations he and others find themselves in and knows that despite his kingdom looking like it life ain’t all roses 24/7 and that people need to want change not just for themselves but others to make miracles happen. Also this voice you’re hearing for Ivankov is not his original; this is his current seiyuu Mitsuo Iwata. The original seiyuu Norio Imamura, an okama and friend of Oda, served as partial inspiration for Ivankov’s name as Ivankov is derived from Iwa which is a nickname that Imamura went by, and that in turn led him to go for and get the role of Iva, his first ever (non-dub) voice role (he’s a stage actor otherwise). Now Imamura is still alive, so why is someone so fitting for the role no longer playing the part? Indecent exposure, that’s why. Mid 2010s, he shared pictures of the lower half of his body to show that his body is completely tattooed and got arrested on July 2010 for doing such. While he was released in September later on, crime’s a significant black mark in Japan, and many seiyuus and actors before and after him have had entire performances redone or redubbed to erase association with prior criminals (drug use is another big criminal act which led to one actor in the Yakuza spin-off Judgement of all things getting completely replaced). While clips of his performance are still floating around on this site, there was no temporary leaving for him unlike Ikue Otani, Chopper’s (and Pikachu’s and kid Sanji’s) seiyuu, who left in Water 7 temporarily but obviously did come back. Imamura’s the only seiyuu thus far who has stepped down from the role, forcibly or otherwise, due to a matter that wasn’t related to maternity leave or death. Kinda makes you wonder what’s to become of another prominent One Piece/Dragon Ball seiyuu who recently copped to having sexual and unprofessional relations with a fan and then raising his hand against sad fan. 0:46 - 4:30 34:10 - 36:35 I love these interludes and how much they lean into the Buggy Mr. 3 duo and their comedic shenanigans as they fight for their lives to get back to the top. Also Buggy’s seiyuu is known very much for ad-libbing (in the Live Action Netflix show, when Luffy defeats him in English, he just screams. When Buggy gets sent flying in Japanese, he screams “Good work today everyone!”) so seeing more of that worked into One Piece is always a plus. 14:07 The fact that the Copy Copy fruit makes the user’s body an exact match was largely played for laughs when it first showed up (it was going to be used more seriously for when Mr. 2 would replace Cobra so that people would think nothing’s wrong behind the scenes and was used to try and fool Vivi into trusting Mr. 2 as Usopp). Glad we get to see it out to simultaneously comedic and serious use with tricking Hannyabal. 19:50 When the okama has been out-okama’d, for these are no mere crossdressers, this is trans rights! Especially the women for reasons that soon get explained (note that thus far and for the remainder of the arc, not a single female prisoner has been shown in Impel Down, not that there aren’t any women detained outside of Newkama Land. One does show up later on in this arc, but she’s technically filler/non-canon). 27:10 He’s also a comedian. That’s the third and last time he pulls that off this episode. Rule of threes. And that’s not a DF power either (or not entirely). He uses that much eyelash extensions (or his eyelashes are naturally that long) and mascara that he’s able to make shockwaves with a wink. 28:00 THAT’S his DF. The Hormo-Hormo fruit. This queen is able to perform trans surgeries on the spot in seconds and 100% effectively (this is why there’s female prisoners in Level 5.5 when we’ve not seen a single one outside of it for the whole arc), and that’s just a taste of the hormones at his command. 33:05 Luffy is always nice to the people who are nice to him. This has not changed since Chapter/Episode 1. This is also the third time where he’s asked/begged for someone else’s life to be saved despite his own needs. First was Nami. Second was Margarette.

I wont lie that ivankov terrfied me as a kid, and as a kid just going through hus own parenta divorce, I understood where the guy was coming from in a way. The homophobia obvviously not a good thing and he totally deserved what he got. But imagine as a kid your dad coming home radically different, divorcing your mom, and leaving you. That kind if change so young can leave a kid confused, hurt, angry. Kind of like octavia from helluva boss. But itd especially hurt if you though your mom and dad had a good relationship. Basically, Emporio stabbed Luffy with a gigantic dose of growth hormones. No, this wouldn't work in real life, but his power seems to be not only to inject hormones into someone, but to allow the body to use the hormones (same way injecting a man with a boatload of estrogen wouldn't give him tig-ol-biddies instantly). Emporio forced Luffy's cells to go through childhood again, in the span of a day. His cells are dividing, dying and repeating the proccess thousands of times faster than normal. In the span of 24 hours, his cells are doing the multiplication they naturally would over the next _ten years._ Doing this while the poison is destroying his body is essentially forcing Luffy to, all on his lonesome, go through Natural Selection of thousands of generations. Every time his cells divide, their DNA changes a itty bitty tiny amount. Some of those, by sheer luck, will be resistant to poison. The ones who aren't will just keep reproducing and dying to the poison, but any cell that learns to fight it off will take over and start producing heirs that are immune as well. The 2 to 3% chance Iva gave for the treatment is essentially what he calculates the odds would be of Luffy managing to, by sheer luck, stumble on enough mutations to fight off all the different poisons Magellan stuck on him

To clarify, what Lucci said about gear 2 shortening Luffy's life shouldn't really be take at face value. His meaning was that the strain and extra blood pressure would be terrible for his health and that would likely shorten his life, as with IRL blood doping. Japan has had a concept of a 3rd gender for a long time that is neither solely man or woman. Okama itself is a term that used to be purely derogatory towards queers, especially homosexual men. It's since been recclaimed to become a term for queers (usually men) who are not usually on the standard gender binary. If you remember Bon-chan's poem in Alabasta it was "I may stray from the path of a man, I may stray from the path of a woman, But i will never stray from the path of being human." There are many famous okama that do comedy or sketch shows for television, and they have been in tons of anime. You've probably seen them before and not understood that's what it was at the time

A little fun fact: Ivankov is based on, and initially voiced by, someone Eiichrio Oda knew in real life. Any resemblance to Doctor Frank'n'Furter is either coincidence or only because Iva's inspiration leaned into it themselves. Also I say "initially voiced by" because the person doing the voice at first lost the role after some scandals cropped up (I think they were arrested, but don't know specifics).

Alright... First of all - Okama. It's a umbrella term, usually derogatory, but also often reclaimed. Refers to gay men, drag queens, crossdressers and trans women. Newhalf refers to pre-op trans women specifically, it appears? Newkama obviously being a combination of those. Ivankov is based on Rocky Horror Picture Show, as many have said, but also on a real-life Okama friend of Oda's, who also voices Ivankov! For a while. Before being arrested for indecent exposure (I can't judge this but based on everything I've seen I believe him when he says he was just showing off his tattoos because. He did do that before also.) IRT Emporio Hormone: in the context that Iva-chan & the assailant are both still down here, then he (or now she) can see how it is and then still get turned back. At least that was my take - that Iva wanted her to experience it (get the mindset of her father). Although other's people thoughts irt Haki and She Can Just Tell check out to me also.
