So, the reason the movie ends like this is because RDJ's contract technically expires in this movie. He isn't gone, but in almost every subsequent appearance, you're going to see these sort of narrative "exit points" for Tony, because the writers genuinely don't know whether he's going to return for the next film or not.

Tony calling himself The Mechanic is a callback to the comics, where Iron Man had a secret identity for a while, as Tony pretended someone else was the pilot of Iron Man and he was "just the mechanic". This is what would have happened in the MCU except in Iron Man 1 RDJ improvised the line "I Am Iron Man" and the rest is history.

To call this movie divisive would be an understatement. Fans were, understandibly, *pissed* that the movie basically jebaited us with The Mandarin, who is supposed to be Iron Man's archenemy. Like Whiplash before him, it feels like a waste of a villain... Still, I appreciate that this movie is all about Tony being able to survive and win WITHOUT his suit for 90% of it.

Kind of random detail, but the actor playing Happy is Jon Favreau, who is also the director of the first two Iron Man movies. Among other things he also made a very nice movie called "Chef" where he plays, well, a chef, who reconnects with his son and his art over a trip across the US selling street food. It's just a really fun and chill time, which btw will totally make you salivate too.

Couple of fun facts: - The director of this movie is Shane Black. He was an actor in original 1987 Predator movie and he directed one of the recent Predator movies from 2018. - Some of this movie seemed to draw its inspiration from the comic series called "Demon in a Bottle" which focused on Tony Stark's struggle with alcoholism. They kind of touched on Tony's drinking issues in Iron Man 2 when he went crazy at his party and fought Rhodey. I think they replaced alcoholism in this movie with his anxiety issues. There's even a shot in this movie which directly matches a comic panel from Demon in a Bottle. But yeh, great movie. I quite like this because it's a departure from the usual superhero hyped movies..

As an avid comic reader, this movie pissed me off to no end. So, fun fact... the Mandarin is not just a classic Ironman villain, but was, perhaps, his greatest adversary. To top it off, he was a badass. An ancient warlord, he found a space ship and some technology, namely the ten rings he wears (which the Ten Rings was the terrorist organization that kidnapped Tony in the first movie, and sold Ivan the documents in 2), but the rings each gave him different powers, including long life. I understand the racial issues that come with calling a guy the Mandarin, but they just completely disregarded any of the cool parts in favor of a "Aha! Gotcha!" twist.

Because if Tony always remembered everything all his armours could do, and used everything at his disposal from the go, there would be no movie. Remember, he's on par with gods, power-wise. You know, I COULD get into how the whole Mandarin plot twist didn't do it for me and how it took me out of the whole third act of the movie when I saw it, but I think Alicia got me thinking about something more relevant when she was talking about how she'd likely never watch this movie again. See, a few years back, I saw this guy here on KZbin (don't ask me to remember his name) carrying on about how he got into the MCU as a kid, but now he's a "grown up", so why hasn't the MCU "grown up" with him? Translation: When is the MCU finally gonna get all dark and gritty (because the guy was still in his late teens/early 20s and this is what every smug crank at that age thinks the definition of "maturity" is)? And I was just thinking at the time, "Dude...they already did that, don't you remember (of course you don't)? THAT WAS ALL OF PHASE 2!". The MCU spent that entire period, from start to finish, trying to give its soul over to the Almighty GrimDark. The only thing is, everybody just forgets that because, seriously...when was the last time someone actually sat down and re-watched ANY of the Phase 2 movies? Hell, people forget how dark "Civil War" really was, because the only thing anyone retained from that movie was the cool airport fight and all the cute Spider-Man moments. And that's just it...all the weird and wacky comic book stuff...those are the only moments anyone truly hangs onto. Anytime the movies try to get all bleak and depressing and serious, it just goes in one eyeball and out the other. Seriously, am I right or am I right?

Me and my folks just rewatched Iron Man 3 today, as I had been going through Robert Downey Jr's filmography and remembered that Iron Man 3 is technically a Christmas movie, directed by none other than Shane Black (well known for directing action movies set around Christmas). And we loved it more this time around! It was better than I remembered, although I do recall as a kid being INCREDIBLY disappointed that we did not get the REAL Mandarin. But now as a young adult who went to film school, I do appreciate the setup and plot of how Aldrich Killian (a white American scientist/businessman and terrorist) created The Mandarin, to give America and the world a post 9/11 terrorist, while playing up the world's stereotyping of the Middle East, never considering for one second the danger that already lurks in America.

Panic attacks are SO frustrating because sometimes it seems like your body is trying as hard as it can to convince you that you're dying. I don't have any CONSCIOUS anxiety, but every now and then my heart rate decides to go through the roof for no discernible reason. And when that happens it's like "...heart attack? Probably not, but what would be the difference if it was one? How would I know?" One thing I can relate to with their portrayal of Tony Stark's panic attacks is that I usually only have mine when I'm *not* in danger, because for me it's like having acute adrenaline and needing to respond blocks the process or something.

I think with this movie starting out phase 2 of MCU, I think there was a lot of hints in the show and outside the show that Marvel wanted to retire the Iron Man character and pass the torch to the next generation of heroes. And likewise Tony’s character also felt like he wanted to retire. So I remember watching this fully expecting Tony to die or retire.

I'm pretty sure in the comics, Extremis had the tendency to overload whoever was implanted with it. But Tony was in such a state, he needed it both to survive, and to keep up with the mercenaries using it. He also became the first fully successful case, and integrated its abilities into his abilities as Iron Man. But then his mind started working more like a hard drive, and there was an arc where he had to slowly wipe his memory to protect heroes' identities, and the further he went, the earlier the suit he had to use because he couldn't manage the advanced ones anymore. Ended up back in the Mk-II for the final fight. Luckily, after that, Tony got a big upgrade with the Bleeding Edge suit, which is my favourite still. It's the one the suit used in _Endgame_ is based on. JARVIS stands for 'Just A Really Very Intelligent Machine,' and the personality is based on Edwin Jarvis, the Stark family's butler.

Man? I like how, when Tony is diagnosed with an anxiety attack, after three+ days of no sleep, he says, “Me??” < insert surprised Pikachu face > 11:00 😂 You’re just like Happy here. Like Tony, what are you doing?! I prefer the humor in this Iron Man though it can be a bit much. I get what you mean about writing relationships where there are no easy answers or sides to take. It’s part of why I can root for this couple. But I think there’s a place for drama where one person seems pretty clearly in the “wrong” since that happens all the time in real life too. 32:25 I like the boring parts too even though they are a bit disconcerting and a lot quieter, but you’re a very visual person. (I know movies are visual but they also usually involve dialog etc.) Also, I watches this when it came out, so I have a different appreciation of some of the “quieter” details than I initially did. Killian is a more “realistic” and toned down villain which is understandably not to everyone’s taste, especially in such a colorful movie and world.

Man, the code word should have been ‘brain fart’ 😂. But still, we’ve all been there, don’t worry about it, man. I have been in Zoom meetings where I’d have a whole prepared speech about something and get hit with a question I should have known to anticipate, but failed to prepare a proper response to. It’s almost funny to see myself scrambling to provide an answer when I review the call later.

A handful of months ago. I developed what my doctor called nocturnal panic attacks, for about two months straight, every single time I juuuuuuust started to doze off to sleep, I would suddenly snap back awake with the feeling that I was in a state of dying, which in turned exhausted me more, making me more sensitive and propagated everything. One of the worst things I've gone through

So, Maya Hansen was supposed be the true villain of the movie. However, apparently some of the higher up executives didn’t think a woman as a villain would be intimidating. Hence, she was unceremoniously killed off in that way.

One thing I really like about this one is how much time Tony spends out of his armour. It really emphasises that _he_ is Iron Man, it isn't just the suit. Of course the suit is his greatest weapon (if you don't count intangible things like his intellect) but even without it he is still a hero. Like Steve asked in Avengers, take off the suit and what are you? Still Iron Man.

Feel like it's certainly better on a rewatch.

On the one hand, I love that they had fake Mandarin be an actor hired to play a role that relied on the racism and Islamphobia of the American people to be effective as a distraction for what was actually going on, but on the other this was supposed to be _the_ moment introducing Tony’s arch nemesis and he’s a stand-in…(because like with Shang Chi’s father, his roots lie in a specific outrageously racist anti-‘Eastern/ Chinese’ stereotype that became especially prevalent in the Cold War.) The thing is having the ‘real’ Mandarin be a tech bro incel eugenicist billionaire played by Guy Pearce is quite the de-escalation from the comics. (Fun fact: The disgraced former VP’s daughter is a quick cameo appearance from a young Jenna Ortega.)

The pain, panic, and deathly fear it induces is incomparable. It genuinely feels like you're less than a heart beat from death. It's terrifying... I genuinely feel for anyone who has ever experienced that. The event is self is extremely traumatizing
