Actually the Alien Resurrection: The Game is WORTH talking about as without it, modern console games wouldn't have the now-standard controls of moving with the left analog stick while looking with the right stick, something for which the game was CRITICISED for on launch. Particularly IGN who, now infamously in hind-sight, said that the 'weird' control scheme would NEVER take off. XD
@michaelschwartz87305 жыл бұрын
Alien Resurrection is kind of a mess, but it's occasionally just plain brilliant. The sound design is amazing, especially given when the game came out. In the dark with surround sound, I had to take regular breaks because it was tying in knots with anxiety. After the first couple levels things kinda fall apart, sadly. But I'll take it for what it is

I remember being in high school when Alien Isolation was announced, and I told a kid: "I'm cautiously optimistic. It's trying to be a horror game, which NONE of the Alien games (That I knew of at the time) have been able to pull it off. And after Colonial Marines lied straight to our faces... I'm doubtful." I've never been more glad to be wrong. Even after the game released, I was still cautious. Colonial Marines and Mass Effect Andromeda were two experiences that really burned by, told me never to trust game developers and their marketing. Thankfully, I saw Fallout 76 for what it really was, and never hopped on that train. BUT, games like Isolation give me hope, hope that a team of developers can set out to make something interesting, and then actually accomplish it. Cause there's a real lack of that in the industry.
@TheSefirosu200x4 жыл бұрын
Oh boy, I'm glad I was never burned on a game like that, or else I might have passed on FFVII Remake, which would have been a bad idea as it's the greatest game I've ever played this generation, going up against other greats I've played like Batman Arkham Knight, Horizon Zero Dawn or Spider-Man 2018. They all pale in comparison. Have yet to play Alien Isolation, but I want to.
@TenseIntense Жыл бұрын
I was equally cautious about Isolation when I first heard of it. After CM was outet as a bugfest I was looking for news on Isolation and found a Developer-reel. That’s where I learned, that Isolation was a passion project for the Developers at Creative Assembly; basically people my age, that grew up watching Alien endlessly on VHS-Tapes. They captured the essence of that movie pretty well with the overall design, world building, music etc., I was so hoping for the team that they could pull it of, as I wasn’t sure about CAs previous games. (Total War was not my cup of tea and Isolation was going to be a new genre for the team). But after playing it for the first time in 2014 I was just amazed. The only downside for me: in the German release of the game there is no option to select the english dub and sadly they didn‘t reach out to the original voice actors of the first movie. So no (german) Sigourney Weaver Intro (or Last Survivor/Crew Expendable Content) for me. :(

There was Alien Infestation on the DS. A solid metroidvania style game with permadeath for your squad mates and a really cool incubation mechanic. If a squad member was downed you could save them but they may have been face hugged. With that in mind the character becomes a walking timer with the chest burster being the alarm. Since a lot (a. l o t.) of people keep asking about ALIEN: Resurrection and AVP2, I hadn't played Resurrection prior to the time this video came out, and to be honest I assumed (wrongly) that it was a very similar game to the previous ALIEN: Trilogy, but simply for the new movie for the time. After playing it for the first time back in 2018 or so I kind of wished I had acquired it sooner because the game is pretty good. Technically impressive for a title on the PS1 and innovative in its dual analog control scheme. Honestly, ish purty good. As for AVP2, as well as "why don't you play the Predator campaigns" of the AVP games I did show: this wasn't intended to focus too much on the "AVP" license which honestly kind of drowns out a lot of the solo-ALIEN games. My interest here was on the ALIEN side of things, not Predator. Video's an hour long already, I had to be selective on which games I covered and which of those were merely passing mentions and more in depth playthroughs. That's my format, or at least the format of these earlier Retrospectives. TL:DR, 1:43

Appreciate the effort of this video. I really do. But AVP2 has the best alien campaign of any franchise by popular opinion and it is a crime to leave it out. If you've played it you would hopefully agree. Not to mention the AVP arcade game is an actual classic and well worth it's own section. I dont see the logic of leaving these out considering you speak about Colonial Marines, which however bad was is it's own game because fans enjoyed the Marine campaigns of the AvP series
@Vulpes895 жыл бұрын
In fact your disrespect for the predator campaigns and the Predator franchise is something I dont like. Noone agrees with you that Predator is a third wheel in these games.
@RedScotGaming5 жыл бұрын
@@Vulpes89 Again: I wanted to focus on the Alien side of things. I never said Predator was a third wheel in "all AVP games", and when I called him the third wheel in AVP2010 *it was a joke* because he really is treated like an after-thought in that game, outside of his campaign. That wasn't a comment on the entire AVP franchise. Honestly i'm getting pissed off with the amount of people complaining that I didn't talk more about AVP or give time to the Predator campaigns. Do I "hate" Predator? No. But I'm not a fan like I am of Aliens. Do people really want to hear me add another half hour onto this video commenting on something I clearly didn't care to talk about? I don't own AVP2. I've never played AVP2. I didn't realise AVP2 was the golden child of the franchise, and never would have thought that two years after making the damn video i'd be getting nothing but complaints in the comment section about it. (this is not just directed at you btw. Would want to say this to every person who has made the same general point, but your reply was just there on the pinned comment - where I already tried to explain why this isn't an exhaustive list of all games - so maybe having this here too will drive the point a bit harder... who am I kidding, people are still going to complain. Y'know, I was a lot happier when this video had 500 views. Fuck whatever's happened in the last month.) EDIT: Oh, and in response to the other comment you left about why I didn't "just make it longer" and if it had to do with monetization: This is an un-monetized channel and I have never made a penny from doing this. How long these videos end up is entirely based on my sanity and nothing else.

I really enjoyed watching this video, and for you to capture all that footage, script, record, edit, etc for an hour long video must have takenan age. As a fellow fan of the Alien movies, particularly the first one, I can really see the passion showing through :) It was a real treat to see someone cover the C64 Alien game. You don't see that often, and I think it's more sim-like turn-based approach was a clever way of generating tension with the limited resolution and audio capabilities of the time. It forced players to try and plan ahead and make decisions, only for the Alien to show up, begin pleasuring itself, and it all goes to shit. Though I understand not spending time covering the various ports of one game, such as Alien 3, (even though the SNES and Mega Drive versions were so significantly different, that alone would be worth noting) a bunch of games were missed out from the history, a few of which were entries into entirely different genres, such as RTS and MetroidVania. This is really for the benefit of other viewers who may not be aware of what else is out there :) The Aliens (1990) arcade game. Lots of fun. Sega's Alien Storm came out the same year and was a similar sort of thing. I don't know which was actually first, but given the relative closeness of their releases, they will have been in development at the same time. How games inspired in whole or in part by Alien started to appear throughout the '80s and on is a subject for a video all of it's own. I can name R-Type, Metroid, Super C, Alien Breed, Doom, Half Life, and Halo just to begin. It's amazing how the movie franchise's influence became so widespread. Anyway... Alien 3: The Gun. Arcade lightgun game. Good for the time and is still pretty fun even though it shows it's age. What about that kak Aliens point and click, text adventure type thing from 1995? It was shit! But at least it wasn't another run and gun platformer or dodgy FPS! You looked at Aliens vs Predator beat em up on the SNES (absolute shite), but not the Capcom arcade one (mental, and so much fun, with an anime Arnie with a big robot arm-thing as a playable character). Alien Resurrection was a surprisingly good fps. Far more entertaining than the film, in my opinion. As others have mentioned, AvP 2. That game was really really good. There's also a lot of love for AvP on the Jaguar, itself a different game to the PC ones. AvP: Extinction was an RTS, another genre covered by the franchise. I thought it was a bit shit but I've met people who liked it. Aliens: Infestation for the DS. If you don't know of this one, you need to hunt it down and play it. It's a MetroidVania style survival/adventure game, where you have a limited number of marines and permadeath, all animated in beautiful pixel art! This is a contender for best adaptation from the source material, as it's finely crafted in every respect. It's unique in style compared to all the other Alien adaptations, and takes something from Metroid which, as you mentioned, was partly inspired by Alien. To quote a different sci-fi franchise, "the circle is now complete". There are also more recent Aliens arcade games in the form of crap lightgun shooters, but nobody cares.
@Grouncontrol4 жыл бұрын
Kind of sad you didn’t even mention AvP on the jaguar, as at the time, that was the best game based off of Aliens. The lack of an in game soundtrack gave the game a better atmosphere than some of the more newer games, and the feeling of being trapped on a station with the xenos was palpable.

Superb job on the retrospective. I used to be a huge collector of nearly everything Aliens, Predator and Terminator wise, and have a big plastic bin full of games, books, magazines, movies and tons of other related items. One of those is my original Activision box with 5 1/2" floppy disc of the 1986 Apple IIe game that you covered. Totally agree that the beginning dropship ring flight was very annoying, though once past that, the game was quite fun for the time. Like everyone below, you missed the boat by ignoring the "Alien Resurrection" PS2 game, as well as the awesome AvP2 title with "Primal Hunt" expansion. Also, you should have covered the very fun DOOM mods, ALIEN Doom and ALIENS Total Conversion. The later was fantastic. There's also the "Xenophobe" arcade game (which I believe was available later on various other home systems, especially the excellent Atari Lynx Portable Gaming System), the ALIENS and ALIEN 3 arcade games, as well as the fun AvP arcade by Capcom.

IIRC, you can skip the awful ship sequence in C64 Aliens by pressing Run/Stop+Restore and get to the actually fun parts. That's what we did because that ship thing was not fun. At all.

There is NOTHING else in gaming like the first few levels of the Alien campaign in AVP2. The mechanics are a bit old-school (think Jedi Outcast), but it's a mile ahead of the first game when it comes to atmosphere and immersion. Why it hasn't been properly updated is also the biggest WTF in gaming

52:05 Really got to me for a sec. I never ever run in this game cuz I know it’s a death trap, so when you ran and the Xenomorph hissed, I kinda forgot who was playing the game and started freaking out. Even brought my hands up to cover my face a little.

The NES port of Alien 3 you played is fairly lame, but the original release on megadrive/genesis the year before is a stone cold classic.

AVP 2, from the early 2000’s does the best job of catching the “Aliens” movie feel. Alien: Isolation does the best job of catching the feel of “Alien” movie

AvP Classic is intended to be brutally dark, to force the choice between your night vision and the scanner as the marine, the unlimited flares (though you can only have out about 8 at a time from memory) are your main light source as a result. In multiplayer it was a standard tactic for the Alien and Predator players to kill light sources to make life harder for the best-equipped combatant. The alien suffers no fall damage, in some of the MP maps the drop from the ceiling is over 20 metres for a satisfying headbite (also how the alien heals compared to medkits and healing device for the other species), consequently too the Predator's vision modes are species-specific in how they target. It's probably the first FPS that requires you make the choice on the fly to survive. The original release had a beautifully atmospheric CDDA soundtrack that worked well, the Gold edition weirdly changed the video segments from Americans to Rebellion staff members providing the acting it didn't jibe well with a lot of people at the time. And yes I played this one a lot when I was younger.

On my my recent playthrough on Alien Isolation, I did novice for the relaxed factor. Haha. No. I was killed in three new ways I'd never been killed before. One, while I was powering up a switch. No alien in sight, then suddenly, I hear it, too late to cancel powering up the switch. Two, in the ducts, it came running from behind and I heard it from my surround sound behind me. Boom, boom boom, by the time I turned around as fast as I could, too late. Fucking dead! Scared the shit outta me. Three, there's the goo dripping from the ducts you have to avoid sometimes. Nope, no goo this time on one duct from the ceiling. He just dropped the fuck down right in front of me, and boom, instant death. Absolutely nothing I could do in 2/3 of those deaths. No matter how good you are. And that was on novice mode! Love it. My goal in life is to beat it on any difficulty without dying once. I've never done it and I honestly don't know if it's possible. Hell, I've even been killed on a playthrough before you even see the Alien during the Medical area scene. Which I did even think was possible. It was hunting me and got me in the flight recorder room! This game forces you to keep your guard up, the whole time. And yes, on my very first playthrough, I too spent about 3 hours slowly going through the beginning as I had no idea what may trigger the alien. The shit terror was priceless.

Multiplayer was actually alot of fun for both AvP and A:CM, but the community withered and died like a plant you buy at Lowe's and then never water it. They were both unique and had good game modes, but by the time I stopped playing it took 30 minutes to an hour to find 3 people to play a game in any game mode.

I was ready to immerse myself in Amanda's isolation... except she couldn't move past the first levels. We now know how Amanda's story ended: she is still on Sevastopol Station, trying to climb onto a box, or something. In space, no one can hear you scream... with frustration.

Alien: Isolation! I legitimately love that game. A bit long, maybe, but it holds up. On my first playthrough, I reached the tram and turned around, just sorta RPing the moment. BIG MISTAKE. The fucking Xeno was literally INCHES from the doors, just as they closed! Damn near shit myself. I don't think that was a scripted moment either, because it never happened again on subsequent plays. Instant classic.
