The CGI you see that feels off was likely created without real filmed assets or good reference. I'm sure this movie uses a mix of both practical and CGI so the CGI shots can be perfectly matched with those that are filmed. It's pretty much the best way to go about visual effects and any sensible director would choose that approach. The number of modern movies that truly have no CGI is absolutely minuscule, and I doubt this blockbuster from 20th Century Fox is gonna be the rare exception.

I'm not sure how scary this will actually be as fear of the unknown is a strong fear, and we all know the xenomorph life cycle like the back of our hand now. I hope Fede can inject something wholly new. Like, a phase of xenomorph growth not seen. Aliens introduced the Queen and psychic communication with her spawn; Romulus needs something like that. The problem with trying to make it pure horror again is a lot of the horror comes from the unknown. Alien became a popular franchise and the face hugger/chestburster can't surprise you twice. It became too iconic. "Don't show the monster too much" is a rule of thumb in monster movies that usually works well if you nail the atmosphere. But by now we have so many behind the scenes and documentaries of all the movies, showing everything fully lit, we have toys and 22 inch statues, we have spin off games with fully detailed 3D models of the creature. We know it inside out. The mystery is gone. Its about as scary as a company logo. Gieger worked on the original design being so unsettling that there were concerns it was too offputting and would hurt profitability and there was pressure on them to change it to something more "marketable". Nowadays the execs probably resist changing it too much incase it hurts "brand recognition". So while I think this movie could be good, and I certainly hope its better than 3 and resurrection, it will just feel anemic compared to the original in terms of horror. Nothing can ever be that watershed moment again, unless you start a new IP. Were in franchise land now. The best we can hope for is an entertaining rollercoster. I think thats why it was so smart to pivot to action for the sequel to Alien. You can't do pure horror again as another director and be confident you can reach the same heights when it is in danger of looking like a rehash, and people expect "bigger and better" in a movie sequel in general. So Stranded marines plus some civilians taking on a hive is so smart for the premise. It avoids direct comparisons of the effectiveness of the horror by adding more of an action element. And so it can be judged as one of the all time classic action movies, alongside Alien being a seminal scifi horror work.

One of the vibes I get from this is the same thing I loved about Top Gun Maverick: the feeling that they shot an actual film as much as possible on camera, and that a lot of thought went into doing as many things as practically as possible during principal photography rather than post-production. It sounds like an obvious thing to say that "it looks like a film" but most movies today avoid doing anything conventionally and instead fill all the gaps with increasingly lifeless computer generated effects that don't have any weight or presence to them. The fact that it has the look of an actual FILM is refreshing.

@@cmgsober72 we'll see, I have more faith in this director then Ridley. I dunno what pull Disney has but they aren't milking it like the marvel side of things. If that was the case we'd have multiple alien projects by now. Prey was done under Disney and it's the best predator film since the first one in years.

Am I the only nerd who's super excited for this, but also for the fact we see Fede Alvarez holding a Krasnagorsk 3 16mm camera?

I like how they made this film more like Alien (1979) and Alien Isolation. I hope they show more glimpses of the xenomorph in this film!

Clearly he aided in the creation of xenomorphs by using the human embryos. Then possibly finding another space jockey ship and crashing it on LV246.

0:52 Not enough credit is going to the trainers on this movie. The Xenomorph is probably scared with all the lights and noise but you can see here the trainer is gently calming it.

the director said he hired the same FX guys who worked on the original film when they were in their 20s, and now these guys are in their 60s making this.
