@@dignusdingus3709 as well as the scene in Aliens when they return to the ship after escaping the explosion (just before Bishop gets torn apart). Bishop is trying to explain why he had to fly off the platform and apologising for scaring Ripley into thinking he'd left them, and Ripley reassures Bishop he "did good." The look on his face is exactly like a child that initially believed they're in trouble, but then feels pride for getting told they did the right thing.

I don't like Alien 3 very much, but this scene always felt immensely powerful to me. No screaming, jump scares or explosions in sight. Just a dying android - a shadow of his former self - trying his best to help a friend, knowing that these are his last few moments in life. I always felt sad that Ripley didn't say anything to Bishop before unplugging him. A simple "Thank you, Bishop" would have meant a world of difference to him. Also, I find it kind of ironic that Ripley, who never trusted androids, in a place surrounded by humans, likely only trusts completely in Bishop at this moment in time. A truly great moment.

I've always disliked or even hated Alien 3 for cheaply killing off the survivors (apart from Ripley) who survived Aliens, and for ruining Ripley's happy ending. But I realise now, a happy ending doesn't really fit with the tone of the series, which is about Ripley dealing with this cosmic horror, which she can't seem to escape from no matter what she does, and also because of the greed of her own species. The alien itself is like a manifestation of all the worst traits of humanity, and her sacrifice at the end of this film, is the Christ like fall to save humanity.
@tehf00n
@tehf00n Жыл бұрын
As much as I love the first two, I think Alien 3 has the most substance in character development, and it's no co-incidence that the director went for a mostly British cast to step away from the meathead marine point of view to the desperate isolation of space again. No real weapons, a constant threat from the population and the alien, watching the only people she has a connection with die ultimately leading to the realisation that self-sacrifice is the only way to win. It always struck me as genius that as she fell to her death and the alien was being birthed, she hugged it to stop it escaping, but also like it was her child. Something she craved since she learned of her daughter's death. Truly a movie with more levels than the average Aliens fan was expecting.

@@tehf00n I get what you mean about the different levels of meaning. I'm not a fan of the film, but I appreciate the deeper themes it was going for - rather than just being another rip-roaring thrill ride. And I never saw the alien birth at the end being symbolic of Ripley's daughter, so that's a pretty neat observation - it's kind of fitting that the final "daughter" she has, is the monster she has been fighting the entire time, as they plunge into the inferno together.

There's something about the way Ripley drags Bishop from the rubbish heap in that grey rubbish area and sets him up and finds out what happened to Newt & Hicks that is just powerful, depressing and very potent. These scenes stayed with me for a long time since watching them and as a child.

The saddest part about this is Ripley had bonded with Bishop, she asks how he is and even apologizes for the state he is still in. Bishop also clearly is genuinely interested in how well she is and keeps up his blunt honesty with her, never deceiving her with the information about the alien. When she severs his power line for the last time, it's like she is letting a friend go. One thing I like to think that is Bishop's final line about "I could be reworked but I'd never be top of the line again, I'd rather be nothing, do it for me." along with her personally ending his life is what helps her not make an emotional mistake when the Weyland brass Bishop arrives, she knows it isn't her friend even though with all this hell, she really wanted one.

That's because there's no CGI being used here. Most of the Rook scenes looked bad as it was painfully obvious that they CG'd the late Ian Holmes face onto an animatronic body (or the whole thing might have been CGI). At certain angles and under certain lighting, it looks okay. But when the camera really focuses on his face and the scene is brightly lit, it looks fake and unconvincing.

I would have like this explaination. Not only does it solve the question "Did the queen bring eggs/facehuggers with her?" but it also shows the limitations of the synthetics: Despite being more human than a real human and although Bishop may have really felt a bond to Ripley and her survival, there were hidden programs inside him which forced him to absolute obedience to the company and kept it a secret. So Ripley was actually RIGHT, when she freaked out about the presence of an synthetic abord the Sulaco at the begining of Alien 2. Bishops forced loyalty would have also be a nice contrast to Burk, who sold his people for money and a promotion.

@Stefano Pavone - If we're getting really technical, all of the survivors (at one point or another) were supposed to have the facehugger attach to them, save for Bishop, who (in William Gibson's version) is found with a facehugger egg growing out of his torso in the cryopod. It seems like Newt was originally supposed to be the victim (facehugger gets her/she drowns/chestburster(?) exits her and goes to Ripley), then it was supposed to be Hicks (the sequence where he dies was originally planned to be shot at one point, possibly during reshoots, but apparently never was filmed due to Biehn complaining) who was supposed to die on the Sulaco when the chestburster erupts, then it finally went to Ripley, which is where they had to rejigger the script to have the "ticking clock" in terms of the imminent chestburster birth. The whole thing about the "royal facehugger" is something that only existed in the original/Assembly Cut -- when it transitioned over to what they wanted for the theatrical version, it got changed to a regular facehugger that just somehow has the ability to lay two embryos. Point is, they were all over the place in terms of story ideas, and that persisted through the film's production cycle.

I thought this was really Lance wearing make up and prosthetics for the longest time. The fact that it's not is amazing. Very good special effects.

Ripley, Bishop, Hicks and Newt made it back to one of the colonies and lived happily ever after. That's what happened.
