As impressive as the effects were in this film, the loader was absolutely phenomenal. As a kid, I knew the rest of the stuff was movie magic, but I thought that loader was real.

The Science Museum of Minnesota had a science fiction display about twenty years ago that featured the full-size power loader (with a Ripley figure inside) and the alien queen. Let me tell you: the Queen was INCREDIBLE. It looked absolutely real-- as did the power loader. A dying art indeed.

Old films that don't have cgi are much better in my opinion, the detailed models and the skills required to make things like this are fast becoming a lost art

The big struggle is that with everything in the camera is that it had to be perfect. There was no way to go back and fix anything in post production.

The loader actually has catipillars tread on its feet. Not in this movie here but in other designs in graphic novels in such and that mkaes it quite useful.

ok but the sequence where dude loads the missile looks SOOO REALISTIC!! HOW DID THEY PULL THAT OFF?? (min 36 of the movie)

I really thought, the powerloader was kind of real. Brilliant.

This power loader would be great to use nowadays. Someone should start manufacturing it. I don't know if there's a company that thought of something like that.

@VWgolfR1 From a person who's driven many a forklift, I can't think of a practical purpose for something like that, other than looking cool. A forklift is all about the load its moving, and the lift's counter-weight. Even in confined places, there are three to four wheeled forklifts that can master an area. One thing that would be hugely beneficial, would be retractable forks. Maybe someone has already thought of that, but I've never seen one. One thing about forklifts is you need it universal.

Yeah and it's a massive shame, there should be a revolution, I'd join it haha =P More or less all films these days use cgi for everything and even though a lot of it looks great it just goes over my head in the end, I just... shrug it off, there's no magic =/ I watch films like this often with my dad, it's an occasion, to me anyway. Thanks for sharing all these, always nice to see making of's.

@Ralastar You're absolutely right. Five minutes after posting my comment I was thinking about it and I wasn't so sure if this loader could be better and more useful than a forklift. Also it will definitely be more expensive to build. But it sure looks cool in the movie :)

@VWgolfR1 Then again, retractable forks would also present a danger of not having long enough forks to handle a load safely. See, FL manufacturers build these things to be as safe, and universal as possible in order to maximize their client base. They have to be made so any dumbass like me can operate them after simple licensing procedures.

I don't see how you could fuck up something like Transformers with CGI, you couldn't do a movie of that scale and the speed of the robots without it. The thing that makes Transformers shit is a shitty script and not the CGI.

"If you can do things in camera it's best if you go for it because it will look better" - Yeh.. In other words.. CGI is shit. So shit that it fucked star wars, fucked The GAY-Team, fucked Indiana Jones, fucked Terminator 4, it's still fucking Transformers, It's going to fuck Prometheus, Total Recall (Yeh, I wish they would), Swiss Family Robinson, Flight of the Navigator, & another 10 years worth of 2nd rate remakes of already 'perfect' films etc. Basically, CGI is killing creativity in film.
