This story very much captures what the United States was and did as we entered WW-II in 1941, as well as how the war went for us, both at the beginning (VERY POORLY!) as well as later (slowly increasing number of victories as our forces both swelled and we got better), and our fierce determination and courage throughout, even early in the war as we endured a steady string of defeats. Like this story, our enemy in 1941 also underestimated us and our total commitment early on, then realized their mistake later in the war, and this story mirrored all of that very well! In this story, the declaration of Total War and the sudden mass conversion of the entire human species from a peacetime footing to a war footing, including all factories and production facilities of all kinds, plus all scientists and humans everywhere, is basically and literally what happened in America after the Dec 7th, 1941 Japanese sneak attack on our naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii plunged us into WW-II, with the formal declaration of war on the United States, by the Empire of Japan, not coming until AFTER the attack that sank our pacific fleet at anchor, and killed over 2000 Americans, was already over. And the attack literally happened while Japanese peace negotiations in Washington were still being pursued by Japanese diplomats even as the bombs fell in Hawaii. Americans coast to coast were incensed and enraged with anger at Japan as never before in history at the dishonor of the attack and the very next day military recruitment centers nationwide were literally flooded and overwhelmed by men clamoring to join up and defend our nation. This included older but still underage teenagers lying about their age so they could sign up. This story mirrors that willing commitment very well. After we declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy also formally declared war on the USA and we were suddenly in a simultaneous 2-ocean war fighting for our very survival and right to even exist and we were not even prepared for war at all. Again, this story captures and mirrors that essence, situation and attitude. 1941 was also an era in America when women simply stayed at home except for a few female jobs. But after the attack, in a VERY short time, ALL able bodied men left the factories and most other jobs for military service, and all able bodied women took their jobs as ALL manufacturing nationwide was suddenly nationalized and converted to maxium war output. Women who had never worked in industry before were suddenly trained and were riveting, welding, sewing, building, producing, packing, and shipping everything needed for total war on a constant and ever increasing massive scale. Everything from boots & uniforms, food, rifles and all other needed weapons, hand held and mounted, with massive production of ammunition of all types and kinds to feed those weapons, all the way up to aircraft, tanks, jeeps, and ships of all kinds including aircraft carriers, and EVERYTHING else in between. By war's end we were producing aircraft carriers from start to launch at the rate of 1 a month! Even butter and meat was rationed at home with the rationing being willingly supported at home to support the war effort as we literally fought to survive. This story even mirrors how the United States fought with a coalition called "The Allies", composed of 30-some other countries, and fought to recapture and recover other countries that had been defeated earlier. All nicely mirrored in an excellent Sci-Fi story. That generation from the 1940's is not called "The Greatest Generation" for nothing and this story captures the spirit and essence of all that very well! Nicely done!
