StarTrek DS9 had the best human take on humans. Quark: Let me tell you something about Humans, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holo-suites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people… will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes

I enjoyed this story, but if Earth was breaking the technological advantage the Varkfeld held eventually the humans will detect them in orbit and waste no time striking their orbiting motherships with nukes.
@geofthompson38446 күн бұрын
You don't understand how mukes work. Or more importantly, why they are pretty useless outside of the atmosphere. Without the atmosphere, there's no kinetic force. Nukes create blastwaves, and it's the blastwaves that cause destruction, but with zero air, there can't be a blastwave.
@UpperDarbyDetailing2 сағат бұрын
Three problems with that. One, ICBMs, especially those with MIRVs aren’t designed to hit things in orbit. Two, any alien attacking Earth (before we’re really in space anyway) would hold Earth’s orbitals. Whoever holds the orbits wins. Having THAT high ground is definitely a winning move. Three, ICBMs (and everything else for that matter) can easily be destroyed from orbit. Although I’ll grant that ICBMs could potentially launch fast enough to avoid CIWS and even if they can’t target a ship directly they should be able to at least get close. Though “close” is usually not close enough to cause damage.

@@UpperDarbyDetailing you send 2 nukes. 1 disperses an EMP blast which wipes out their electronics and navigations. The 2nd only has to detonate within 100 miles of a group to catch them in a blast radius.
@UpperDarbyDetailingСағат бұрын
@@dominickefrim3088 further problems: electronics can be hardened against EMP. Most military equipment is already. US equipment anyway. Second, space is essentially vacuum. What destroys things in a nuclear blast are the thermal pulse and pressure wave. No air, no pressure wave and space ships are already designed for extreme temperatures. Even with a big nuke it has to pretty much be touching the enemy ship to damage it at all, and even then 50% of the “boom” is moving AWAY from the ship and does nothing.

Not too bad of a story. But humans would need to capture a spaceship in order to back engineer it and thus be a menace for a space fearing species. Last resort of the aliens would be to glass the planet.

Harry Turtledove is one of my favorite authors. I love his "Darkness" series. Idk if that's what it's called, but every book has the word "darkness" in it. (Into the Darkness, Through the Darkness, Darkness Descending, etc)

The humans move troops around and create disguises with where you have emtpy field or towns instead of troops - against an enemy that has full control of orbit and can monitor every place on earth? That's either damn impressiv or really lazy writing.
