The Talos Principle 2 Part 8 - I find a button in the woods. It's outside the normal puzzle zones, and I need something to hold it down. What is the meaning of this?

The swapping pedestal mechanic resembles mechanisms that were already possible. Such as having a light-gate opened only by a pressure plate on the locked side. Or a fan powered by a pressure plate in a sealed area. However, the first example is broken by jammers, and the second example needs a specifically designed large area. The pedestal enables this to be reliable, easily placed anywhere, and blatantly obvious to the player. Making this mechanic an actual puzzle device, seems like a method of reducing clutter in complicated puzzles, and a tutorial to cement this mechanic as obvious to the player.

@holomatic1549 11 ай бұрын
Bleh, I feel like this "new mechanic" only makes you backtrack a lot more for no reason other than to fill in an unconnected button; doubles the amount of steps without providing any meaningful depth than not being able to use something you otherwise always were able to.

@@holomatic1549 i feel like thats just an issue with the game in general. There is too much "tutorial" and "easy" puzzles thats supposed to introduce a not-so-exciting new mechanic. Good puzzles just feels so few and far between. They definitely could've cooked a better puzzle with this swapper, but there is just so few puzzle slots

@@holomatic1549 “backtracking” bro most puzzles are barely the size of a small house lol. It’s like the OP says - it condenses a mechanic that already existed, streamlines it, and allows more puzzle elements to utilize it.

Ah, small nitpick on my own comment: when I mentioned "a tutorial to cement this mechanic as obvious to the player", I meant the pedestal itself is the tutorial. For the devs to have actually made more than 1 tutorial puzzle for the swap pedestal, was redundant. For any player to have a dedicated recognition of the locked gate mechanism (or equivalent) as being its own unique puzzle piece, and think about it as a single object when doing the puzzle in their head? That would require excessively many tutorials, and they might never even simplify it in their own head down to being just 1 object. But having the pedestal exist as its own device? Instantly memorized by the player in the intended way.

30:50 I’m kinda glad Tyler managed to find something to escape a level with. He’s right that what he did was harder than simply solving a puzzle… because the intended solution for that flame was just around the corner between some rocks 😂 he would have been so disappointed if he had found that before taking an item outside a level.

It does mean one thing though, Tyler needs to set a challenge for himself to figure out how to smuggle as many items outside a level as it is possible.

I did that for the Pandora star. To be specific: I got the converter from puzzle 4, put it on the leg of the structure needed for the Prometheus star (which was very janky due to the slope), then used it to connect a green beam from the southern triangle level (The one Aliensrock did first) to level 3 and then to Pandora.

I just noticed at 11:20 that the icons on the screen not only show you what targets you've selected, but also whether or not the item you're holding can see the targets when placed down where you're looking. It's very subtle, but quite clever.
@Linvael

When playing the game it's not truly subtle, it's not something you miss out on - but Tyler doesn't generally show fiddling with angles that would make you notice it in viewing, and it does nicely fit in the UI without calling too much attention to itself

2:10 I think this new mechanic "only" simplifies puzzle design and solution. The concept of having to swap out things is as old as world 1. But it is getting too complex to set up and memorize where everything is and what can be swapped with what. A dedicated swap mechanic makes it easier to "tie up" pieces, without having to design a dungeon where a box can replace only a specfic relay/jammer/driller.
