The worst thing about ships of the Sulaco's class was the fire alarm system. Apparantly the ships response to a fire while the crew were in hypersleep was to shunt all of the sleep capsules into escape pods and launch those at the nearest planet. This led the total loss of several ships when one of the crew forgot to extinguish a cigareete or unplug the toaster before going into hypersleep. The second worst thing about the ship class were the escape pods, which apparantly had no engines or braking thrusters and made planet fall like a rock. This often killed three quarters of the occupants during "landing".

I'm guessing that the USCM, like Weyland-Yutani, look to cut costs wherever/whenever they can, especially given the fiscal nature of that dystopian 22nd century setting. USCM Commandant: Since this is just a recon/rescue mission, and we do not anticipate any space combat action between Gateway and LV-426, we will only send out the necessary complement to conduct this mission. One Marine fireteam, a drop ship pilot, a commanding officer, and the accompanying civilian group. The ship has been preprogrammed for transit to and from LV-426, with enough contingency equipment in case things go South on LV-426. No need to pull funds out to pay a thousand superflous personnel. Costs are heavy enough for fuel/life support consumption, and equipment usage. That's just how I imagine such a command decision would come down.

Everyone loves the alien, but how cool would it be to see a capital ship space simulator set in the Aliens time frame? There's so much detail to the ships that I think this could be an awesome title. Manage sensory systems, firing solution, support craft (like the drop ships), reactive armor, cooling, life support, reactor power... and more in order to out maneuver your enemy. Heck, even marine detachments could be a factor! There's even an alternate script to Alien 3 which involves the Chinese space forces as adversaries to the US forces... both, of course, vying for the Alien. So we have at least three factions: US Colonial Marines, China, and Weyland Yutani. Of course, I'm sure there would be ample opportunity to put the alien itself center stage in such a game. Suppose, for instance, there's an M-Class star freighter drifting in deep space with top secret cargo that everyone seems so desperate to capture ;)

For those comments addressing the odd fact that such a large ship didnt have any other personnel: 1- First off, James Cameron said that the inspiration for this movie came from the idea of gun ho, cocky marines getting cut off behind enemy lines in vietnam. If this movie was made that way, it would make sense how a small squad gets helicoptered deep into the jungle, but when their chopper is shot down they are stuck against a primitive force that uses wave attacks to overwhelm their superior technology and firepower. 2- Theoretically in the far future of this movie, the ship is largely automated. A handful of marines and Bishop can just push a button saying “Defend Ship” and it will fight back automatically. There is no need for a hundred people to push button and turn cranks, since it is largely utilized as a long range transport boat. 3- From a hypothetical standpoint, it is possible that wetland yutani (who largely funds and equips the colonial marines as a private off the books army) may not have wanted more witnesses than was necessary. Having dozens of fleet personnel onboard makes it that much harder to keep a secret if an entire colony was wiped out due to corporate negligence. 4- Its just a movie so get over it, nerd.

It could be because space travel is extremely demanding as far as fuel, and consumables are concerned. Everything-personnel, food, habitable volume is calculated down to the ounce.
@erwin6693 жыл бұрын
@@tgarnett25 true, but the tech manuals mention that the complement of the Salaco is 90, but they only deployed half of a 26 man platoon plus Ripley and Burke. There is a lot more room left on board.

I liked the design enough to incorporate it in the fleet list in my little sci-fi bit. It fills a gap in the fleet list. When you need to deploy ground units but don't need a full scale troop deployment ship or heavy lander vessel. So far the Sulaco class ships come in 3 variants. The standard Mark 1 that is just a bit larger with different equipment, weapons, power and engine systems. Along with a greater capacity of drop ships ( 6) modified versions of what the Sulaco had. The Mark 2 is larger and packs more weaponry and drop ships that can deploy larger APC's. The Mark 3 is larger than the other 2 and has fewer weapons. It deploys directly to a planet's surface to land Type 3 Geist ground fortresses. Or walkers and different types of destroid class mecha.

Just for perspective, Zeta Reticuli is 39.17 ly distant. In the film it's stated that help was 17 days away. If help is coming from Earth, that works out to Warp 9.44. Enterprise at Warp 9.99 takes 14.35 days. Lambert says that Nostromo will take 10 months to get home. 304 days to travel 39.17 ly equals Warp 3.61. Prometheus took a little more than 2 years, working out to a fuzz over Warp 2. Orville is stated as covering 10 ly per Earth day.

Seems unbelievable really. A real world naval ship would have Navy personnel running the ship...Marines are part of the Navy but generally don't run ships.
@singletona0823 жыл бұрын
Run of? To be blunt? The humans are essentially cargo.
@Hereticalable3 жыл бұрын
@@singletona082 A warship would require a naval officer to be in charge, not a Marine. This is, of course based on modern understandings of Naval practice and warfare. It's assumed Naval tradition will carry on into Space based operations, perhaps with some overlap of Airforce traditions. Warships don't view their personnel as cargo in any navy - even a transport ship (the Sulaco is an armed warship capable of ship to ship and ship to planet attacks without deploying troops that has transport capacity). Perhaps things are different in the Aliens timeline and that's why they send what look to be about half a platoon to a colony of 158 colonist to investigate a potentially dangerous situation with an extremely hostile organism, with zero back up. The Sulaco should have had at least a full platoon of 43 Marines (going by current US Marine Platoon numbers as a guide), with at least one Naval officer running the ship itself when they come out of hypersleep. However the influence of Weyland Yutani could explain why the Sulaco was sent undermanned and pretty much blind. The theme of corporate corruption and conspiracy are strong in the films, and it's obvious they have sway over the United Americas at least in the Aliens universe.
@singletona0823 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Robinson possible dumb question. Are we sure the ship's entire staff was marines or of it was a naval ship seconded to the marines?

I always thought that there should of been more crew/marines onboard. I guess the company classified the mission and had the ship on auto-pilot with a flight crew in hyper sleep as backup only.

I love the design of this ship. I remember getting the USMC Technical Manual as a kid and geeking out over it for hours. One thing that still bothers me about Hollywood spaceships (well, the ones that at least try to be realistic, Star Trek doesn't count) is how little mass is devoted to propellant (The Expanse is guilty of this as well). Even at the energies described a ship like the Sulaco would need a significant fuel fraction to have a useful amount of dV.
