Im 6‘2“ and only ski on the west coast. I use a short ski (just under my chin) on 88 width, rockers tip and tail and an aggressive camber. Great off piste or on the groomers. Personally I don’t like super fat skis, I prefer agility over stability. For first time buyers I recommend renting a bunch of different skis and see what feels right for you. Skiing is very personal and one shoe does not fit all.

Those adjustable poles are great for versatility.. I have a set like that and I like them. For mogul skiing, if you are skiing in the trough line and making pole plants on the bumps, it helps, big-time, to have a shorter pole length than your "alpine downhill". On my home mogul run, which is Gunbarrel at Heavenly Ski Resort, I see lots of newbies to moguls with poles that are perfect for a steep groomed run, but definitely too long for the moguls. That causes them to need reach high for pole plants. They often end up not being able to keep their hands in front of their body, which means they have a contorted upper body position, which is bad for maintaining balance in the bumps. I didn't figure this out on my own, the mogul skiing community here told me about it back when I was relatively new. That seemingly small adjustment to my bump skiing setup made a huge difference for me. In terms of ski length, I usually choose what fits the conditions and my mood. I have lengths from 186cm all the way down to 157cm among my skis. (I am 5'9") I recently posted a video on my channel where I review my favorites and talk about some of the trade offs from my POV.

Hmmm. I get occasional crap about length. I'm 180 cm tall (5' 11") and my current skis are 172 cm and 174 cm respectively. They come to the bridge of my nose. I prefer this length over say 180 cm because they have less swing weight, they are easier in the trees, on moguls, in the terrain park etc. I'm not trying to ski fast GS turns. I'm good skiing a few cm short.

Yes, the theory I understand is shorter gives you more adaptability. If your poles are too high up, it's awkward and you have no power.

I've seen everything, super short to crazy long. If you're skilled and motivated, you can drive them. Be safe out there.
