As a new member, I can say that it is well worth the small price for membership! There are so many "extra helpers" to aid you on your sewing journey. I keep finding new things and thinking a little "yay!" My mom left me piles of fabrics. I can't wait to try out some of your ideas to use and enjoy them. I'm making some cat coasters, from one of your earlier projects, for my SIL's birthday later on today. I'm going to use some of her pieces for them. I'm so excited and inspired. Thank you.

Buying fabric is extremely expensive. When spring comes and all the flea markets open here in Scandinavia, I will buy absolutely everything I can find of used clothes and fabric bags to cut fabric from them. You can buy a jacket full of fabric for 1-2 dollars. If you buy the same fabric in a shop, it costs at least 20-30. Then I get a bunch of fabrics like you have in the video, but hopefully bigger pieces. Does anyone have tips for other ways to get cheap fabrics and preferably larger pieces?

Also use up old clothes you have in your wardrobe and won't wear anymore. Sometimes vintage bed linens have beautiful prints + lots of fabric!

@albarodriguezcollantes5615 Жыл бұрын
@@AlextheENTP something that saddens me quite a bit is the fact that all those pieces my mom made for me are now lost. I grew up and my mom gave them to cousins or family friends to get more use out of them. None of them came back, even some were not properly cared for. I'd love to have them. At least I have a half finished skirt made of an old sheet that we sew together, well that she used to show me how to sew 🤩 I should not be so materialistic, but I am 😅
@AlextheENTP
@AlextheENTP Жыл бұрын
@@albarodriguezcollantes5615 Yeah, I understand your feelings on that - it is nice to have a sentimental item to touch and see. It could be that your mom also saw the importance of getting a lot of use out of a product that some effort was put into. For example, I made my niece some clothing, and was thrilled to see it still in circulation years later, being worn by my smaller niece. From the maker's perspective, it's great that our creations are still being worn and loved. But from the recipient's perspective, the sadness of loss is still felt. Maybe take some comfort in your mom's sewing being such good quality that many children were able to wear what her hands had made. And you were still the number one giftee in those clothes' lifetimes! 💝

One Christmas morning, I found homemade Barbie clothes, courtesy of my mom and neighbor lady. I was so excited and I think that was the best present an 8 year old could get. I'm 62 now. I wish I could say I still have them, but I gave them to my sister when my niece was old enough for them. I also had a great aunt who would send me things she had designed and I had to put together. I loved getting gifts from her, and to this day, I can put something together from just a few things. I passed this to my great niece. She is 17 now. I have also gifted her with a sewing machine. Keep crafting everyone!

I need to make some smaller pieced garments like these from my fabric scraps. In the past I've waited until I have a massive and unmanageable amount of scraps, then spent months making a big tiered patchwork skirt. It takes so long and is so much work, I have one I started in 2020 that I gave up on!

I did something like this when making play athletic shorts for my grandsons. The fabric was $17 a yard (to expensive!), so I used some my workout pants (that I don't wear anymore) as fabric. I ended up having to piece the waistband together, but considering they were basically FREE, no complaints here!

Here in NZ, we got A LOT of charity shops! Often, you can pick up a shopping bag full of t-shirts and jerseys for a couple of dollars or three. That's where I get my jersey fabrics from. I especially like men's 6XL 😉. They also sometimes have a craft corner with fabric remnants or larger scraps. Sometimes, I even buy new t-shirts for fabric (at least XXL) and reuse not just the fabric, but also the bottom seams and neckbands.

For sure, it can be pretty overwhelming and you know.... it feels that no matter what I do, I even tried zero waste pattern making, I still end up with scraps...mostly from fabric that I bought years ago and ended up with extra yardage or more than I needed for a project. Every 2 months or so I pack a neat bag with small kid print scraps for Artemis's school, they love it for their craft time. Rip when you want to be thrifty and use fabricscraps but you're more... minimalist sexy modern galadriel inclined stylewise and don't like contrasting prints/colorblocking/ high contrast in general/ high detail that isn't texture/ lots of sewn stylelines so you end up spending weeks on a patchwork coat existing of hundreds of tiny little 5 x 5 cm squares and you hate wearing it cus you feel like a clown.
@amandah3205

You've learned more about yourself and hopefully know now that scraps aren't for clothing. Instead you may prefer to make potholders, fabric bookmarks, bookbags, belts, grocery bags, or other projects with scraps and keep the clothing with only larger pieces of fabric. It is an experiment that you likely improved your skills through...also sometimes people feel like a clown due to fabric other times it is the fit.

Hello Alisa. Would you say these type of makes are the most fun to make even? For me, these kind of makes just make me happy. They are the little bonuses you weren’t expecting. I am finishing up a backpack and I have been so frustrated with myself. I didn’t buy enough webbing and I didn’t buy the sliders for the straps . Of course the store was out of the colour I bought so I had to buy a different colour of webbing and try to make that look intentional 😩. But I pushed thru and it’s almost done. I’m going to make a wallet next. 😊

@@ThoughtfulCreativity I’m going to make a fabric wallet. Something that will match my backpack. Then I’ll be set to walk to the store. I’ve never made one , so I thought I’d give it a try.

That's a very good idea. I'll make a dress with a lot of pieces to wear around the house for me and my daughter. That way I'll remember every piece I made. It'll be fun.
