Alistair Begg examines the significance of the Gospel accounts of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why are the accounts of the resurrection of Christ so central in all four Gospels? What is the place of the resurrection of Christ in redemptive history?

Luke 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. On the Road to Emmaus 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

Praise God. Truly the resurrection is historical, rational and empirical. Ptr. Alistair explains it very clearly thus giving me confidence and clarity in the NEW TESTAMENT DOCUMENT. Thank you very much.

Depending on which gospel account you read, you get a different story about how many women visited the tomb.

An empty tomb is evidence for the tomb being empty.

@Harold Zwingley "They are merely stating the obvious necessary physical facts that accompanied the miraculous event." An empty tomb is evidence that the tomb is empty. It isn't evidence that the tomb had a body in it and the body has returned to life. "It wouldn't be a big deal if the tomb had not been sealed and guarded knowing that the body might be removed; they actually planned for this possibility." The story says that. But since there is no supporting evidence for the story there is no reason to believe the story. "How did these things occur with those precautions having been taken?" According to the gospels ( depending on which one you read, they don't get their stories straight) there was no guard and the stone was removed by an angel or by an earthquake. But since there is no supporting evidence for the story there is no reason to believe the story. " Under those circumstance do you think you could swipe the occupant from the tomb of the unknown soldier? Not likely." Since there is no empty tomb that has been proven to be the alleged tomb of Christ, your questions are moot. " Despite all that, an empty tomb does not prove or disprove anything by itself" It proves the tomb is empty. " but a resurrection would look mighty silly without an empty tomb - wouldn't you agree?" You must not have read the Bible, there are numerous resurrections in the Bible and almost none of them happened in a tomb. And since no evidence for any resurrection has been shown, your question is again moot.

Has anyone ever thought that there was no reason for the women to go to the tomb because they wouldn't be able to roll the rock at the entrance to access jesus body without the men. Its like the author had the women in the story go alone knowing he was going to make the rock move by itself in the story.

The reality of the resurrection of Jesus is what the Christian faith rests on. This fact addresses the deepest pain known to human beings. The next time you death lightly and think you’d be better off dead, I invite you to swim a length in an Olympic swimming pool without breathing. The agony of oxygen deprivation will make it very clear that death is a horrifyingly agonizing experience. Then get out of the pool and think for a minute about how you will eventually, one way or another, die. Jesus is the only person who ever lived who promises to restore you to life by his own power. Nobody else has made these claims and backed them up by coming to life again. And if this account of ressurection is a lie, then the only meaning life could possibly have is the lies you will need to make up for yourself to believe in. I’m taking Jesus at his word.

Nah. The Romans tossed the body away; there was no 'tomb', it was an invention of the author of Mark.

Perhaps reading “Evidence that demands a verdict” would bring some clarity. The case for the resurrection can not be so easily dismissed.
