Mexico's Vigilante State - Fault Lines

Thousands of vigilantes have taken up arms to fight the Knights Templar drug cartel that has been terrorizing communities in the state of Michoacán. Businessmen, farmers, and even doctors have gone on the offensive to take back their towns and protect their families from extortion, rape, and murder at the hands of organized crime.
Fault Lines travels to the western Mexican state to follow the chaos unfolding there and examine how the federal government is attempting to control the complex situation on the ground.
Is this a popular uprising, or part of the same never-ending cycle of armed conflict that has routinely scarred the people of this agricultural state?

exactly....piece of shit journalist who apparently think the cartel killings are OK. They write their piece of shit articles of what the cartels do, the state does NOTHING, and the police is involved...and then nothing! The towns people are killed & raped and no one helps. However, the MINUTE regular people TRY to defend themselves here come the vultures to sensationalize people helping themselves...smh.

Hey guys. I am from Colombia and I am 40yrs old. I have seen these things happened before back in the 80s and 90s, and anyone who took arms to defend their families and land was called a guerrilla fighter by the government, so they, the government, could have the moral high ground to come and killed them... That's why I don't call them vigilantes, They are the TOWN FOLK tired of tyranny, tired of seeing the people they love get killed for no just cause...Tired of seeing the fruit of their labor being taken from them without being able to protest or have any input... When the TOWN FOLK is pushed this far, THEY won't back down...

Eden Castillo really? Why do I always see this kind of comments? The fact that there's crime and murder in a country doesn't fucking make it lawless it may be corrupt but it's not lawless and why everyone is like "well they defend their homes form the cartel soo the obvious next move its to turn in a cartel them selfs" not everyone in Mexico will turn in a cartel if they have guns or they are poor there is still people that want to live in peace or at least with out the cartels

@tonygranados6601
@tonygranados6601 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, you can own firearms in Mexico. It's just a very thorough process. Most don't have money leftover to be able to afford weapons. The reason there's a problem is because the U.S. makes it so easy for anyone to buy them. They report them stolen and sell them South of the border for a good price. If they didn't have a neighbor like us to provide weapons to criminals, I don't think it would be as big a problem as it is.

@briancrawford69
@briancrawford69 5 жыл бұрын
@@DCM88 all drugs are for losers. And the war on drugs was meant as a war to clean up drugs in America. What does it have to do with the CIA and Mexico? You think every nations governments haven't done shady stuff with or in other countries? That's the problem, instead of more people being like these awesome guys in the video we get more people wanting to blame others for their problems these days. Mexico has plenty of issues it needs fixed even if the CIA was never formed. That same CIA has also helped Mexican authorities catch and fight the cartels in Mexico. Big problem is though the Mexican governments have been very corrupt so I can never tell if the guy you're helping them fights being removed for the interest of something other sketchy shit the Mexican government is doing. The most important thing Mexico needs is a government from the top down that actually wants to clean up and rebuild Mexico which I am totally behind even as an American. The people of Mexico don't deserve to live under fear of cartels and a corrupt and oppressive government on top of it. Would be awesome in our lifetime to see Mexico end up getting the same or similar type constitution and freedoms as us and have a safe and thriving country. I've always wanted to visit Mexico but I always hesitate just because the shit that goes on down there

It will never stop until Western Countries legalize drugs. 1 kilo of base cocaine is worth 500.000 or more. Money is Power in this world. Legalizing weapons will result in the same as what is happening in America. There is a school shooting every 3 weeks on average. Also the citizens are the cartel. So by legalizing weapons you support the cartel. That would only make the cartel more powerful. STOP giving the cartel the free market in drug trade. That's the only option that will be effective.

FINALLY!!! LONG LIVE MEXICO! with my love and respect: I am a fiercely loyal U.S. American and a Black guy "liberal" (although I dislike politically-labeling myself preferring "spiritual" matters, but do it for expedience). I am not a political-conservative of the extreme-right nor a Sen. Sanders socialists of the extreme political-left. And I respect what those vigilantes are doing to defend Mexico from cartels, criminal drug lords who also extort and murder so very many honest, hardworking Mexican citizens. But for the citizen vigilantes to register their "illegal" guns with the corrupt military/government is questionable and potentially extremely dangerous to those brave Mexican citizens. And interviewed, a guy claimed the government took the innocent people that is true might be the government is working with the cartel members. The vigilantes are said to know who the real cartel criminals are. But then the local business men are exploiting the local farm/grower workers and their families making them even more poor in a "chain of exploitation" from U.S. corporations to local criminals, according to a local farm worker ... and who explained it all very well. My heart is with those honest Mexican families that could be my own families were I born among them. Wow! what a mess. The U.S. of America and American nations, Western nations, African nations, and Asian nations etc. are also being exploited by the wealthy thus enriching such evil as for example the Chinese Communist Party and etc. But I acknowledge not being well informed on the entire subject.

So by legalizing weapons you support the cartel with weapons. That would only make the cartel more powerful/scary. STOP giving the cartel the free market in drug trade. That's the only option that will be effective. It's sad there's a taboo on drug use but because of that we literally give mafia/cartel a FREE MARKET. it's a HOLE in the market. Why would they stop if they earn billions/trillions from it.

@Devin Chen Men, you americans really are lazy even for laying on the couch: www.iop.harvard.edu/sites/default/files_new/research-policy-papers/TheWarOnMexicanCartels_0.pdf There's plenty more studies made by mexicans and US institutions online if you really want to go deep into the subject, but bottom line is: if a small militia in distant countries like Somalia can buy american guns, why a multmillionare international drug cartel with operations based in Mexico and plenty of business in the US wouldn't? It's almost axiomatic. Besides, Mexican laws doesn't allow private armory factories, only the military can produce guns and none of those are anything like RPG's, R-15, AK-47, HK416, .50 Cal. Rifles, or even 9mm rifles like MPX; mexican goverment has been forced to import that kind of weapons just to respond.
@fraai
@fraai 5 жыл бұрын
Please Wise Man. Compare the gun related crimes to other Western countries where guns are ILLEGAL. You might learn something. The only ones who "win" are the ones that own the gun factory's. They brainwashed the American people into believing it's a good option to get guns. I wonder why. maybe because they sell guns. I have met plenty of Americans who have fled to Europe in order to find Peace. You are a shame to the human race if you think weapons are the answer. Look what happened to Germany in 1930-1945. That man influenced his country into using weapons. It started a world war.
@ALVIN1920
@ALVIN1920 5 жыл бұрын
@@fraai Yeah, like every country in Europe where guns are illegal. You know, where the rates for guns crimes or violence in general are so low that not even as a whole can be compared to the US; or the Southern countries of South America like Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile or Argentina where the rates for gun related crimes are at least 9 times lower than the US. GTFO of here, man.

Ricky Hunter it's already happened. There's this great piece on the autodefensas, I think it was done by Vice, but it's pretty dark. The ones that didn't turn in their guns, including the founder of the security forced, were mailed and the ones who did, were recruited to the local police force and in time, many of them have become the corrupt pigs they sought to destroy. Very depressing stuff. The devil lives in Mexico, right now.
