Mexico's beach wars: This week Krishnan Guru-Murthy is in Mexico to see how the whole tourist industry is at risk of being destroyed. The drug wars are well known and generally kept away from the beach resorts, but right now there is a new threat, even in places like Cancun. The crew normally go and look for the story, but this time it came to them. Be warned there are scenes of gang violence you may find disturbing.

Phantoms Colts I truly wish it was that easy. It sounds good enough, but there are so many factors not shared by the US that makes such a simple ideal very very difficult (I’m not saying impossible) to execute. Basically I’m saying it could happen but if it were that simple it would already have happened so that approach just needs tweaked in the specifics as to how to make that into a reality but I can’t talk shit about the ideal. I just don’t know the way to go about it realistically happening.

I just visited August 25, 2018. At the mandala, one of the most popular night clubs. I had my bathroom stall door kicked open and the cartel guys that were selling drugs in the bathrooms jumped in there with me, Emptied out all my pockets interrogated me and threatened my life since I didn’t buy cocaine from them. They even took some cash from my wallet. I would recommend to avoid the night clubs and just enjoy the activities the resort offers. Another night even the Cancun POLICE pulled over when I was walking down the sidewalk and threatened to throw me in jail for 36 hours and a fine of 8,000 pesos ($400 USD). For a bogus violation that all the locals the next day told me was a lie they use for the sole purpose of receiving a bribe. They wanted $200 USD and they said they would let me go. Which I had to pay them. They took me to an atm and kept my girlfriend in the police vehicle until I came back which I feel so guilty for my girlfriend to be in such a position because we did not know whether they were going to take off with her as soon as I got out. I was extremely concerned for her. You can’t even trust the corrupt police their that’s a damn shame. The guy in the video was not joking when he said the crime comes to you, you don’t have to search for it. Cancun was such a beautiful beach I rock end you don’t leave the resort at night and take taxis everywhere instead of the bus. Please like my comment I hope the spread awareness to every one else. But can’t spread my word to many people.

The place where the couple was found dead (17:04) is a couple meters away from my house, it was awful. Months before, a shooting took place meters from where this couple was found, me and my family had to hide in the bathroom because the shooters got in our street (i live in a suburb) and they were shooting left and right, it was terrifying i had never experienced something like that cause before, all the shootings and murders took place in bad (really poor) neighborhoods but now danger is everywhere. Also, kidnappings and feminicides have been awful lately. Young girls have been kidnapped, raped and murdered non-stop this past year. Maybe 5 years ago Cancun was beautiful and safe... but now is danger zone.

@Will Danner My parents were farmers that nearly starved in the depression that FDR caused you idiot. FDR took a recession and turned it into an eight year depression by controlling money going only to the privileged few, like Obama did. I picked cotton for my school cloths, that is how privileged I was. If you want to share your wealth, feel free to donate all you want. When your socialist ideas say to have the corrupt government step in and take my wages, you are harming all people.
@larrytischler8769
@larrytischler8769 5 жыл бұрын
@Will Danner The recession began in 1929. FDR had his socialist policies that kept us in a depression until the war boom started in 1942. Take YOUR blinders off. Real wages went down for the lower and middle classes during Obama. Only the wealthy class had an increase. None of the Dems that caused the financial bubble were ever prosecuted, since they were protected by Dodd/Frank, the dems in charge of the Banking Committees in Congress legislation. Obama's billions in so called stimulus and infrastructure spending were siphoned off to his cronies. Zero infrastructure was realized. Taxpayers ate billions in bad debt Obama incurred in saving the unions for GM and Chrysler. Only since President Trump has the wealth turned around to give good manufacturing jobs to working Americans, in increasing numbers and pay.

True Story: A family friend speaks fluent Spanish and has been vacationing every summer in Mexico (teacher) for the past 20 years. About 4 years ago, he got into a taxi in Cancun. The driver past his destination and when he notified the driver, the driver locked the doors and he couldn't unlock the doors as you typically can by pulling the lock or handle. The way he got out of the situation was by faking a heart attack. The driver pulled over, opened the door and pulled him out of the car onto the side of the road and drove off. He hailed another taxi and got to where he needed to go. He now visits Thailand every summer instead. I'm starting to have my suspicions about what he is doing in these countries. lol

Mexico will have to do what Colombia did in the 80s: become a quasi military state and crush the cartels without mercy. Mexico also needs to take a page from the Colombian rule book on how to deal with rampant corruption within the police force. Start with a small unit whose members are 100% loyal. Our own country did that with the FBI and Elliot Ness back in Prohibition Era.
@Boviss1Bovis
@Boviss1Bovis 5 жыл бұрын
And this will end, as prohibition did because a War on Drugs and/or alcohol creates the gangs and cartels - and the crime. Drug taking is a social and spiritual/psychological issue and should be dealt with by the medical and associated professions. Putting it in the hands of the criminal law and creating the monster of perpetual war and corruption and failed states has been a disaster of a policy.

I remember the one and only time I went to Mexico, when I was on vacation to the low desert (where I grew up) in about my mid 20's. Mom was getting plastic surgery in Tijuana and I kind of had to wait it out in what was perceived to be a 5 star hotel (which was more like a U.S. 3 star), with my Grandma while she did, which took several hours. I figured... while in Mexico, do as the Mexican'ts do. After taking a trip around the large block, I walked into some of the stores, which were underwhelming, and anything larger than a standard 2 bedroom house in the U.S. was typically an American founded company. I immediately noticed one thing that was very apparent too. That is there were absolutely no stoplights. Everything amounted to 3-car wide round-a bouts, with no clear understanding how the madness would sort itself out in the amoeba of traffic, if there happened to be multiple wrecks, or injured people in the street. Once I got back, I managed to get to a higher deck in the hotel, which allowed me to look for long distances (plainly) in any direction, and without a compass. It was clear which was North, because as long as the eye could see, left to right, there was this artificial line of buildings, clearly distinguishable from everything else. This is, I was looking for miles worth of the clearly defined U.S./Mexico border, because all of the U.S. buildings -- were on average -- several times larger, sand, pink, or peach in color, including bright and vibrant, while most infrastructures on the Mexico side reminded me of the Industrial age. They need revolution.
@michaels4255
@michaels4255 5 жыл бұрын
Although not recently, Mexico has had revolutions before. It has never solved her problems. If a majority of people want change badly enough, they have the ability to get it through the voting booth. The purpose of ballots is to avoid bullets (the disorderly and unpredictable change of revolution). I think the problem is that if some candidate said he would declare martial law, impose strict curfews in every city, install cameras on every street like London does, arm every law-abiding male citizen, and round up all the known or highly probable gang members and their close associates and summarily execute them, that the public would not elect him. Just like America, where people complain about the Democrats and Republicans, yet put them back in office every election, ignoring the third parties that might really make some reforms. There's just not enough desperation yet.

But, when the US crashes Mexico will look good in comparison. And no homeless in the streets like in LA. Or needles and human feces as in San Francisco. The world economy is going to crash, and everyone is going to get hit bad. But I believe the US being the biggest guy is going to fall the hardest. Mexicans are very self reliant and used to making do on very little. The US weathered the Great Depression magnificently, but this next crash is going to be worse and Americans are not what they used to be. To many are fat and coddled and on welfare. Or just worn out trying to make a living with three jobs and a wife who has left them with using the kids as a way to further screw over the poor slob. Family system is starting to fail here to I think, but still not so badly as the US.

My family used to go to Rosarita Beach just south of Tijuana regularly. We stopped going in 2005 after talking with an American man who worked for the Mayor of Rosarita Beach who owns the Roasrita Beach Hotel and other businesses. That man told us of 3 recent attempts using fully automatic machine guns on the Mayor's life because he was trying to keep the drug cartels out. We have never returned to Mexico as a family. I took a friend who lectured regularly at a famous resort in Tecate 20 miles east of Tijuana there a few times afterwards but it is just too dangerous to return. Good for the local vigalantes who are protecting their homeland.

@Harry Peterson people try. There have been a couple of attempts but some of the same forces have become corrupt. The fighting is a lot more violent than one would think. Say for example if you would involve yourself in combating them, these cartels have the resources to find out who your family is and would kill them, doesn't matter if it's women and children. These cartels have military grade weapons, and the little government that exists in some areas is bought out. If both the US and Mexican federal government would really want to effectively do something against all of this, they would, but they're both more corrupt then we would imagine.

Adapted against a village with just as many guns. And twice as many people. Power to the people, keeps power from the evil. You should really take a history class and realize a chance to fight is better than laying down to die. If you had it your way we’d all probably be dead if not speaking German..... That’s your logic, just lay down and let the big evil take over. It’s easier that way.

Adapted my other comment wasn’t intended to be condescending at all. I was just explaining take a history course to see how gun able countries could have made major differences. But I did misunderstand your point, and I do agree. But I still feel all people should have the ability for guns. Because criminals will obtain weapons either which way. As they always have. This why they are criminals not law abiding citizens. Tho it would increase the small percentage of bad ownership to good, that is only like the current state of the US and many other countries where people live in denial and refuse to accept the harsh realities and danger of life, even in upscale areas. Human nature in it self is animalistic and violent. Some people just choose to ignore and pretend it’s non existent around them to stay ignorantly happy. Until it isn’t and they are at the business end of that violence with no actual chance to actually save their own or someone else’s life or well being. Sorry for the long reply, but I really don’t think anyone should happily be a victim off a chance to never need to see violence.

I have traveled in Mexico extensively, and was once ordered to leave a public surfing beach by a thug and one of the owners of cartel owned, Cardon Adventure Resort in Sinaloa.They made very clear threats, we were forced to cut our vacation short, when we reported it to the Embassy they already knew of the situation from previous reports. Why were we threatened and ordered to leave? Because we were lodged with a non-cartel owned hotel on the same beach! Cardon Adventure Resort advertises uncrowded surf and no venders.........I wonder why?

The "dumbing down" of crime happens in other tourist destinations. Barbados has a drug and gang problem (not near the Mexican scale), there are regular shootings, crime (especially burglary) is high, in a recent cropover celebration 20 people were shot in one incident, this was dismissed by the authorities and on a forum run by tripadvisor the events were defended as many "destination experts" are involved in the tourism industry and don't want any negativity about the island. It's wrong.

James Moon Mexico is still the same, for the most part. Everything is amplified. Perfect example, three people are killed in Cancun this year. In LA that's , easily, a daily occurrence. What about in St. Louis or Detroit? Killings are not random in Mexico. They have a reason. I bet it's much worse here in the US, per population. It's that no one likes to hear about the same thing, over and over, in the news.

I loved Mexico's beaches so much in the short time I had to appreciate them. The government has little control of the cartels there. It's a beautiful country run by greed. Not a single solution like a wall, drug legalization, or gun rights is going to fix. Nuanced tactics are needed here. So just support the places and things you care about as best as you can, or watch them wither. I will be visiting Mexicos beaches again. And LOL to the folks saying "if they were allowed 2nd amendment rights" must have missed the roaming vigilante portion.
