Honestly, from an apolitical view on the situation, the head of state and by extension, the head of the executive wields the authority to declare martial law and carry it out too. Meaning, neither the police nor military has any political say, they are and honestly should remain as mere instruments of political action. Really, the only thing that's left is to argue the constitutionality behind its declaration, being that parliament is being blocked from voting to overrule said authority, and in which case we just hope that the military and police recognises that this constitutional issue forfeits his legitimacy. So, in fact, it's about to what extent those forces are radicalised for him to succeed. Like, it could be a matter of time that so long as communications are online, for low-ranking officers to consider the situation and splinter from his authority.

I’m south korean. there had been rumors that president Yoon would declare martial law on armed forces day (October 1st). When this was mentioned in the national assembly, the presidential office immediately protested, and the controversy quickly subsided. Considering south Koreas political climate, it’s quite rare for the national assembly to comply so readily with the president’s stance. In this martial law declaration, the president stated his intent to “eradicate” anti-state and pro-North Korea forces all at once. It seems likely that this is part of something he has been preparing for a while. We’ll probably find out the details when morning comes (it’s 1:00 AM here).

Can any south korean explain what does this martial law in south korea means ? like will all courts in the country will be shutdown and press would be banned ? becuz india also had 1975 emergency martial law and these things happened.
@sulsoyy97638 күн бұрын
Something similar…. We are back to 1970 where military may take control over the government instead of parliament. Our democracy is gone.

Hello from Seoil, tomorrow i have to work but i can not sleep. But the thing is martial law is canceled already by political party election. And let me explain the law, it can arrest people without any warranty and government can control publishing books and news and SNS. Can't go outside at night, Army are patrolling street. I learned it from school history time. And now i am looking at it. I'm so sad and worring about the true our economy got backed so long like 10 years ago.
