Another thing not really discussed here is the phenomenal brain drain that country is suffering. I'm an American living in Spain, and know many young, professional, skilled, driven, ambitious, capable and amazingly decent young Venezuelans who left the country for a better future. As their homeland continues to spiral out of control, these young people are building new lives abroad, likely never to return. It's a blow that I simply don't see Venezuela ever recovering from.

The majority of young Venezuelans left for other South American countries. The better of moved to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Chile. No one makes a fuss about this because neighbor countries aren't denying entrance of millions of Venezuelans. Most South American countries are a Capital-Social Democracy there for they offer free health care, free schools and Universities and some sort of welfare. I think Brazil alone received 900.000 in the course of 2 years, that's a lot of people. Mercosul is like the EU in terms of living, you can move around, study, work and get health care. Instead of causing a conflict apparently Mercosul decided to support the opposition Democratic leaders that were not killed. Support them with money, equipment to make campaigns and etc to resolve the issue in a Democratic way. Apparently isn't working because Maduro is still there.

Helping poor people is good but Venezuela failed to keep a good reserve, failed to protect and increase food production, failed to build a manufacturing base, failed to invest in diverse economy, failed to teach and promote people to be self sufficient and entrepreneurs and failed to teach people to be prepared for tough times and failed to be humble enough to step down when their leadership was found to be corrupt and inept. My heart goes out to Venezuelans and I hope they band together to get rid of their wicked government. I hope they induct many people into the military and put them to work to build animal farms (fastest way to grow food) and to protect them and the distribution of that food and also to work vegetable farms and protect them and their distribution. The only way Venezuela will get out of this mess is to grow their own food. Even if tons of money were given to them- it would only be a temporary solution and it would not solve their root problem which is lack of self sufficiency and diversity. They seem to have forgotten that you don't put all your eggs in one basket because when you do and the basket falls- you have no eggs left. This should be a warning to the entire world and to every single person and family and nation!

Snape WorstNightmare They're not doing fine, they're just doing better than Venezuela, they had to make a lot of adjustments just to stay afloat. The difference is that middle eastern people recognized that they have to tighten the belt to survive, Venezuelans still think it's a problem of leadership not a systematic issue, and as the country earns less and less they are asking for more and more.

Socialism is actually a very successful system. If you are part of the socialist elite, it's a fantastic way to get extremely rich. You just need to be ready to rob and kill anyone in your way, and to mercilessly exploit everyone else. It's like drug dealing, only less moral.

what is happening here is going on all over the world and will get only worse not only in these poorer countries but everywhere because as more technologies improve less people will be needed to run and produce products which means higher unemployment all around the world. for anyone who says there will always be the service industry for jobs think again even if no more tech enters this sector how many jobs do you think places like walmart, mcdonalds or the housing industry can employ , not enough to keep the whole world employed and that is with no new tech look at walmart, target, lowes they are using self checkouts now and they are looking into rf technology which will do away with all check out lines. things will never change as long as money is around in any form. i do not care what form of goverment is in place in any country weather it's socialists , democratic, dictatorships, or even communism as it is being used today as long as any type of monetary system is being used by these type of goverment systems the real bottom line is they are a really a capitalist goverment CAPITALISM IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST FORM OF DICTATORSHIP IN THE WORLD ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND AS LONG AS MONEY IS AROUND WILL CONTINUE TO BE. now before anyone starts saying we can never have utopia and you are probaly right at least at this time in our history but i ask you why is it when ever anyone talks about getting rid of money its either all or nothing as far as this world as it is or UTOPIA why can't it be just better one step in the process of a BETTER world yes we would still have people who would seek out power just to have it, yes we would still have religious differences, and yes we would still have some crime but nothing like now could you see a drug dealer dealing when the only thing he would get is prison time and no money of course not would people steal to sell on the black market when they will get no money for it but will go to jail of course not especially if anyone can go to the store and just get what they want. yes we will need to educate people on not abusing the system , yes it will be hard to change the montary system has been around for thousands of years and it seems ingrained in our DNA but with that said think how long the system of money has been here and look at our history it does not work now and it will get worse . i will leave off here because it would take me a full length book to explain why and how we need to change. i will leave this last thought go look for your selves and not just in one our two places but multiple places [ at least four ] and not just one side of an issue but all sides. [ yes there is always more than two sides to an issue ]

The exchange rate you guys use its wrong; 4,500 bolivares its 4.50$ not 450$ Don't forget Venezuelans don't really have access to dollars so they are force to pay black market rates of 1000+ bolivares = 1 USD

I dont live there, have only watched the news coverage and youtube documentaries, so I cant consider myself qualified to judge but it seems to me that Venezuela has experienced a perfect storm of destructive mistakes over the past 30 years or so (yes, I believe this mess pre-dates Chavez) culminating in the chaos we see today. The primary reason? I would say that Chavez , his predecessors, and the current government of Nicolas Maduro, have ALL failed to plan ahead and encourage diversification of Venezuela's oil-based economy. Venezuela is like Detroit, or some boom town in the American West, with its historical ,near-total dependence on one industry. Add to this, a "socialist revolution" and cult of personality which chased away foreign investment with its constant anti-yanqui, us vs them rhetoric, along with discouraging private, for-profit investment of any kind, and its no wonder the country is flat broke. The world's 4th largest oil producer for several decades did not, does not have any cash reserves? Very bad planning. Capitalism is an ugly word in Venezuela, but it looks like "ajorros" is even uglier. And then there's the issue of corruption and crime......what investor or corporation in their right mind would think of doing business there now? The Venezuelan people deserve better than this. Pray for them.

By thinking that someone else is responsible for their lives? By thinking they can live like the grasshopper? By creating an anti-Capitalist, anti-Freedom, authoritarian loving culture? By not grasping that ideas have consequences. People who defy reality and substitute their wishful, fanciful thinking, usually face an ugly and harsh reality. Sooner or later. One cannot live life by not paying attention to the fundamentals and expect anything but death, destruction, misery and despair to ensue.

No perspective presented here, the chavist system has clogged but nevertheless just patrolling the streets and recording random reactions doesn't look like a documentary. Just across the border in capitalist Colombia people are living in the sewage system and poverty in much of the world deprives people of basic necessities. Venezuelans though ripped most of the benefits from oil much unlike what is happening in Nigeria for example. Lets see what the country looked like 20 years ago and judge.

It is not going to happen, why? I will tell you 1. The US dollar is too stable too big in order to lose on its values so quickly and so much as the Venezuelan Bolivar 2. Only 19% of the food in the US is imported, ask yourself how much in % of the food in Venezuela is imported! 3. The US export is diversified: technology, food, natural resources, chemicals, cars, planes, etc, NOW ask yourself how much of petrol constitute of the Venezuelan export? And now compare the price of petrol from July 2016 and July 2014! 4. There are more factors .................. much more than you think I am telling to you as someone who was to some extent a socialist as a young guy more and less 20/24 years old. Do not worry think/analyse/learn and one day you will come up to the same conclusion.

the 2008 crisis nearly completely collapsed the economy- Russia and China discussed dumping their US bonds during the crisis- thankfully china said no- but the next bubble- and it will happen- the Banks have continued their practices that led to the 08 crisis- but this time the BRICS nations are better suited to take over as the world bank- I believe the next bubble they will dump their bonds and then the US will see a depression larger then the great one. It can happen- and the fact that China can tighten its belt- dumps the argument that china needs the US for our consumption- simply naïve. And we must remember that although china has embraced many capitalists models- it is still deeply rooted in communism- Why do you think they have built entire cities that are empty? Cities!
