Love Derek’s playing so much. He’s such a massive influence on my playing. This is a perfect example of power and skill. One take genius.

Please enlighten us with whatever recordings you have from that album's production. Best Trio record so far (in my opinion) and an amazing send off to the best drummer we've had. 🖤

I absolutely love these videos. First, people get a front row seat to see world class drumming. As a guitar player who can hack it with the bass, trumpet, trombone, and very simple, limited, keyboard skills, drumming has always kept me in awe. The coordination, and passion needed to play them are something I just can’t do, so I’m always blown away by great drum performances. Second- I love playing guitar along with the tracks, piped through my amplifier. It’s as close as I can get these days to playing in a band, and it has made me a better guitar player, forcing me to focus on my timing and technique (things that just never were super apparent learning and playing punk rock guitar solo). Thanks again, sir, and to quote a Trio song title- “Keep ‘em Coming”!

This Addiction has always had my favorite drum parts/sound. BHAE is now the other album right up there with it. You can really hear how much attention to detail you put into those parts, like always. But this one was truly something special as someone who has always been the biggest fan of your playing

@Alkalime Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I only have video of drum tracking for two songs, as I said in the description, I didn't know at the time that it would be my last album with the band, so I didn't document it very well. This was one of the standout tracks when we were writing the album, and also one of the most fun to play.

Man! if you got a video or can make one of the drumming for "Bad Time" I'd love to see it! Its the fills on the second chorus with the floor tom's and similar to the fill in "American Scream" are crazy good.

I think I read somewhere that you came up with the main guitar riff too, or am I imagining that? Absolutely killer song all around. And listen Derek, don't beat yourself up too bad about not documenting much since you didn't know you were going to leave at the time - it's pretty clear BH&E is regarded as one of the band's top albums already, very few people get to end things on a high note and this album was a high note for all 3 of you. We really can't put into words how amazing the album is, and how happy we are for you and for Matt, Dan, and Atom.
@Mr__Snrub5 ай бұрын
I’m pretty sure Derek said in a Facebook AMA that he wrote the riff for Break (another great one) and Matt wrote the riff for Hot For Preacher. Couldn’t agree more with your thoughts on BH&E, it still blows me away months later!

Damn that fill into the bridge should have stayed! That break in the top end gave it better dynamic in my opinion.

How did Cameron Webb become the producer on so much later Alk3 material?
@liamjonasscale4 ай бұрын
This is the hardest alk3 album for me to play along to by far. The hi hat is so low in the mix you can't hear it at all and I lose track of the flow. Like I see you playing it here, and it appears to be functioning normally, I can actually hear it in this video....on the record it's totally yeeted. Was that done on purpose in mixing? Here in this video it sounds awesome

Where you say you didn't realize it would be your last album, do you mean you wanted to continue but they thought it'd be better if you just parted company? I know you said you wanted to pursue some other things but were you hoping you could still be part of Alk Trio in some capacity or return after an extended break?
@DerekGrantMusic5 ай бұрын
@-TheRealThing- Leaving the band was 100% my choice, and it was the hardest decision I've ever had to make. I flew home after all of the drums were tracked with the intention of going back in two or three weeks to finish recording the album, but during that break I realized and accepted the reality of my situation - my increasing struggle with Bipolar disorder have made it hard for me to travel in any capacity, and for the sake of my health, I can no longer tour on the level expected of the band - especially with a new album coming out. I didn't want to hold the band back in any way, and I also didn't want to jeopardize my health unnecessarily so stepping down was the clear choice. I hope that makes sense. I love and respect Matt, Dan, Alkaline Trio and the fans too much.
