how many room mics were used on this?
@DerekGrantMusic11 күн бұрын
@susiminavaja There were two in the live room and there might have been a third "wild card" mic in an adjacent booth, so there's both a stereo and a mono track, the overheads were also placed fairly wide so that added some air as well. You can see the live room from a few different angles in the Crimson drum tracking footage I posted, here's a frame from it: bit.ly/crmsnrmmics

I hope you aren't upset that some of this makes me think of ZZtop
@DerekGrantMusic11 күн бұрын
@dextermorgan4432 I posted a reply yesterday but it appears to have disappeared. It was a doozy, but I'll give 'er another go... Saying that anything I've done is reminiscent of ZZ is a top compliment in my book! I'm a lifelong fan, they were one of the first real bands I saw live - I brought my drumsticks to the show so I could air drum during their set and I would occasionally sit in with my dad's band and play Tush at bars when I was 8 or 9. Furthermore, I have a Degüello tattoo on my arm (even though Tejas is my favorite album). Dan and I often played ZZ songs at Alkaline Trio soundchecks, usually Precious and Grace or Beer Drinkers & Hellraisers, and this happened one Halloween! instagram.com/p/BBXmQXYt5P4 Thanks again for the compliment, it was the highlight of my week.

Lucky enough to have caught the Good Mourning tour in Vancouver oh so long ago... As a drummer, I am floored by how effortless you make this look. It's amazing how you can be so efficient and musical with this stuff, while still allowing for so much space. Thanks for this. 🖤
@DerekGrantMusic13 күн бұрын
@RandyGoogle Thanks for the kind words buddy, it means a lot especially now that my performing days are mostly behind me. In regards to efficiency, I was a pretty busy player when I was younger - overdoing things to show off or stand out - that changed on the first Suicide Machines/Descendents tour in 1995 or 96. Bill Stevenson was an early influence for me but watching him play night after night was a transformative experience. His control and economy of motion is second to none, conserving energy then exploding in dynamic bursts that drive the song. It changed my whole outlook on the role of drums in music and I spent the rest of my career striving to achieve that level of playing.
@RandyGoogle13 күн бұрын
@ For whatever it’s worth, I think you did it. At least to the point where it changed my approach to drumming too. So, thanks for that! Good luck on everything you do from here on in - and all the best!

This is so cool man, just watched it on repeat about 7 times.. Remember when it was released thinking it reminded me of The Frighteners a little too. The colours during the band shots look amazing, such a shame they were turned so grainy and black and white as could have made a nice contrast in the chorus to the dark ghost stuff in the verses. Anyway, I'm sure there was a good reason for that.. How the hell do you have this anyway? Is there more? Please tell me there is more..
@DerekGrantMusic15 күн бұрын
@tunesmith86 I'm glad you dig it! I was a big fan of Peter Jackson's early films, so there's a good chance that The Frighteners was referenced when we were planning the video. I've always been the archivist for bands that I've played with, a role that came naturally to me (I'm a nostalgic person) - so it was my responsibility to collect and keep track of all of the audio & visual media, documents, etc. There's another cut of We've Had Enough from April 25, 2003 (two days after the rough cut on the right side of this video) - It's labeled "Picture Lock/Revised FX", I imagine it's pretty close to the final version but I haven't done a direct comparison (yet!). I posted a side-by-side for the Mercy Me video if you haven't seen it (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pILWm2WsgpmNmJY), and there's a ton of great stuff still sitting in the archive.

on the topic of jeff petryczkowycz, do you ever plan on posting anything telegraph/skolars related?
@DerekGrantMusic19 күн бұрын
@dazitude Unfortunately I don't have much from that period aside from what's already in circulation. There were two outtakes from the "Switched On" session, one was released on a benefit compilation a few years ago ( smallsbar.bandcamp.com/album/keep-it-a-smalls-world-after-all ) and the other has yet to be mixed. We've talked about remixing the entire album in recent years which is something I would love to do, and I feel like I had a cassette with some rehearsal stuff from that era - I'll post anything that I find. Thanks for asking, I'm glad someone is interested in the stuff!

@DerekGrantMusicАй бұрын
Hey Tiffany! Sadly, there are no photos or video because, despite the name, Disco Werewolf was, in-fact, a vampire! The character only fully manifested once at a family resort/campground somewhere in Eastern Europe - which is where our bus driver decided to park and strand us for the day off on one of the Trio tours. There was a big social event that evening with a live band and I let DW (Disco Werewolf) get in on the action and do some dancing. Black cape, gaudy costume jewelry necklaces with a half-open button down shirt, plastic fangs and probably makeup. It was a riot.

What a setlist. Goodbye forever, nose over tail. Did you ever have an input or preference for tunes that you wrote with the band over earlier stuff on setlists, or did you just play whatever irrelevant
@DerekGrantMusic2 ай бұрын
@stephenmaginnis731 I loved playing all of the songs (with maybe two or three exceptions!) but I hated making set lists, as does Matt - it usually falls on Dan to build a set list then Matt or I will move things around or replace one or two questionable numbers. I think that's why I enjoyed shows where we played entire albums, it eliminated that factor, for better or worse.
