I've had over 30 doctors in 5 years and it's sad that you have to go to your doctor's ask questions Tell them things that you know ask them if they can change medication, ask them if you can stop medication because you found out a medication that you were given was banned in Europe because it causes cancer, They tell you to quit smoking but they're willing to give you medicines that cause cancer, when you start questioning your doctors, I just had a doctor tell me that I need to find a different doctor. That is what I deal with, when you start questioning your doctor so you can feel better because you haven't worked and over 4 years in your living on disability, instead of doctors helping you they write you off! 😪

I don't trust MD's! I'm also disabled and haven't seen an MD in 10 years when I got messed by very badly by 2 in a row. If you're on a disability, they don't get paid much and want you gone fast! So you've sat in an uncomfortable waiting room for up to 3 hrs to be jerked around, gaslighted & not listened to. If you decide to go back, put your phone on record. Inform the doctor you're audio recording the appointment. Say the doctors name and date.

Also, a LOT of people don't do well on synthetic hormones... Synthroid and Levothyroxine have a LOT of side effects they don't tell you so you have to search online.

Thankfully have had all these tests over the years, unfortunately most of them too late to stop the damage of Hashi's - it took 10 years of having 'thyroid problems' before I understood enough to pursue further than a doctor just testing TSH and maybe T4. Even though it was too late for me to reverse or stop auto-immune thyroid disease, I have been able to gain a lot in terms of quality of life and prevention of other conditions that auto-immune thyroid can lead to (elevated cholesterol, sugar, heart disease, etc). Testing RT3 and having a doctor willing to treat to RT3 (more SRT3, less Tirosint) in the last 12 months is also allowing me to feel better, and also to address the hormonal changes (ahem, nightmare!!) of menopause more effectively because we're not fighting thyroid imbalances. As always I will give credit to you Dr. Childs because your focus on providing patients with useful, actionable information is a game changer, and has changed my life for the better.

Hi I realize this post is 2 years old, but would you be willing to share the name of the doctor willing to work with you? I live in the Detroit area and I have yet to find one. I have been having hormone problems my entire life, and even though I finally got a lab test that showed high TgAb over 3 years ago, no one has worked with me on it. My health is just getting worse and worse and I just feel stuck. I have just been told by doctors (literally since I was 8 years old) to just lose weight and then my problems will go away. And losing weight (and keeping it off) has always been an impossible task. When I was a teenager I asked to get my thyroid checked and after my TSH came back normal (even though I was freezing all the time, deep voice, amenorrhea, in addition to being overweight) the doctor that administered the test said to me "thyroid medicine is not a diet pill. Let me tell you about the 4 food groups and exercise..." I finally found the right doctor when I was in my 20s that put me on some thyroid meds but my symptoms have never been controlled. I really think I'm just missing (or maybe the doctors) are missing something. If you have some information that would help I would appreciate it. Thank you!

It’s not something that you have to do forever, it’s done so that you can figure out which foods could be contributing to your negative health conditions. People don’t realize that the things that we put in our body are the reason that we have 99% of the problems that we have. Try the Lion Diet or the Carnivore Diet! It saved my life. I visited an Endocrinologist for first time. I was disappointed when she totally disregarded my concerns about the RT3 test. It was totally irrelevant for her. I was 2 years in Levothyroxine prescribed by my general practitioner. My symptoms were getting worse. I stopped using it. I am desperate. The tests are "normal" and I still have all the symptoms with no hope.

3 months ago, my physician completed this battery of thyroid lab tests upon my request. He told me that everything looked good. However, several results were outside of the normal range, including T3 at the bottom of normal, free T3 well below normal, TSH had dropped substantially in 6 months. He said that my tsh was within the norm, so that means my thyroid was good. So, I don't really understand what my result indicate. At that time, I watched your session on how to take thyroid meds. So, I began desoloving my levothyroxine under my tongue. Now 3 months later, I have thick 1in hair growth around my hairline & the handfuls of hair loss I had been experiencing for years has virtually stopped. I'm now interested in what my thyroid labs might look like now. Should I have them repeated? I'm glad I found! Thank you!

I just went to labs that do the tests YOU choose. You pay for them. Then take those to your drs who don’t want to do more tests. Each city has several labs in it that do these. I live in a small city in Texas and even we have several labs within 15 minutes of my location, all charging different prices from even day to day. It’s on the internet. Just google labs in my area without drs orders. And order what you want. 😬

Hi Dr. Childs, I was diagnosed with Thyroid an year ago, my TSH was 7.8, I have been on thyroxine sodium 25mcg medication since then. Recently, my TSH, Free T3, Free T4 are all within range, but I still have all clinical symptoms of thyroid. I want to get tested for Anti body tests, but wish to know if I should discontinue my medication for few days before taking that test or give blood sample post taking current medicine or just give sample in morning without taking medicine? Had to take matters into my own hands a few years ago due to my GP making my situation worse!! .. Was always feeling rotten, going back and forth to the Dr’s to sort it out. Took a private blood test that showed I had elevated, above range TSH, elevated T4, low T3, very high RT3 and high anti-bodies .. So what was happening is that the Dr was piling me up on T4, this was getting converted to RT3, blocking the uptake of T3 and therefore keeping my TSH high .. I was on 250mg of T4 and I was still under active and feeling like crap! I have since been self medicating on Liothyronine which has purged my RT3 and allowed me to lower my dosage of BOTH T3 & T4.

Also talking about ‘Doctors’ I personally have 100% totally lost faith in the NHS Dr’s here in the U.K. when dealing with hypothyroid/Hashimoto’s sufferers like myself. Had one appointment with a Dr (This is before I started self medicating), he asked ‘How much T4 are you taking?’ I replied ‘250mg’, he replied you should be on 225mg, drop ya dosage, get another test in say 14 days and we’ll go from there’ so that’s what I did. Took the test after the 14 days, rang for my results and the receptionist said ‘Your levels are fine’ even though I was still feeling like death. I asked for a phone appointment and when he rang me he said ‘Your levels are slightly off, what I suggest is up your dose to 250mg and come back in 6 months’ … I mean what a pile of rubbish!! Is that how any Dr should approach ‘investigative medicine’?? Absolute crock of shit and just wanted to fob me off!! … Wrote a complaint and then I was told that the GP in question had already retired. I told them that I don’t care if he’s retired, I’m complaining about his conduct when he was practicing and therefore I demand an explanation … They came back with bent truths etc about the 2 appointments etc …. That’s what we have to deal with in the U.K.

I'm in the USA. I'm using Standard Process Thermatrophim PMG for thyroid and Dermatrophin PMG for adrneal fatigue. If there's any way you can find a very good Chiropractor Kinesiologists in the UK I'd ask if they can help you get your thyroid problems straightened out. It's tough paying out of pocket but worth feeling better. But, if you go back to an MD, I recommend pushing the record button on your phone, inform them you're recording the appointment. Say the doctors name and date. I don't know the laws in your country. It's lawful here. It's malpractice evidence. I don't trust MD's, AT ALL!

Hey Dr Childs! I have a quick question. I'm a man in his early 20s, and my birth mom has a history of thyroid issues. She actually had to have her's removed. And I started having symptoms a while back such as intense fatigue, more hair loss, and other hypothyroid symptoms. The doc checked my bloods a few times and said my TSH at one point was a 1.7, a 2.2 at another point and a 4.2 at another, and my TPO antibodies were at 12. Also my body temp was running lower then normal, sometimes down to 95-96 degrees even. But, as alot of docs do, they said it was in the normal ranges and didn't require meds. Personally what do you think of these results?

I had thyroid cancer back in 1990, and had my thyroid removed. I have been on thyroid medication since then. My problem, is that I have had all the side effects related to the medication, and I have all the symptoms related to my dosage being wrong. I am seeing a specialist now, but he doesn’t seem to care or be willing to pursue more testing other than T3,T4, TSH test, and tumor marker test. I found information on the internet about thyroid disease , Hashimoto and other autoimmune diseases , that the estrogen dominance is the trigger 😳 to those diseases and that is why it is always most of the time on women . ... my mother and two of my sisters have a hypothyroid that started with menopause , they never had any problem before with the thyroid in their life. and for me is when I lost my pregnancy at 28 years old and with a lot of big stress . I also know someone at the age of 13 who started rheumatoid arthritis when she started her menstruation ? Is it possible that the oestrogen dominance can cause this thyroid madness. ?

Hi I have high sugar in my blood. Very recently started noticing red dots on my body like normal brown dots. I been to laboratory and checked my thyroid hormones and they are absolutely fine, then afterwards I went to endocrinologist and she said that my thyroid is working fine and there is nothing to worry about, she did a procedure similar when women checking how their baby is developing. And showed me how my thyroid is etc. But recently I started having difficulty to swallow and feeling as if I have a ball in my thyroid but visibly my thyroid isn't enlarged in no way. I remembered that as a kid I gad a problem with it and was low in iodine, and so now I purchased iodine supplement and I do hope that this strange thing will stabilize in my body. Do you think there might be something else that can affect it? Forgot to say my appetite is low and this is strange because I do get hungry but when I get my food etc I find difficulty to eat my portion, can this be because of my thyroid is low?

Compare your PTH, to your calcium level. A calcium level shouldn't be over 9.9. If your calcium is high and your PTH is low you have Hyperparathyroidism. Vise versa. This disease has awful symptoms. You need to have a dye put in your arm so the doctor can find and remove the parathyroid. It's the only way to stop it

I have Autoimmune thyroiditis. TSH is a hormone which tries to increase T4/T3 production in thyroid gland, when T3 is low. More T3 in your system -> Less TSH will be produced. So TSH drop indicates that your Levo Thyroxin does it's job.

All of these test should be covered. A lot of times doctors will tell you “it might not be covered” I usually get told this for vitamin D. It’s always covered. If you go to your doctor with symptoms your having and list them and asked for the labs (TSH, free t4, free t3, reverse t3, total t3) those should be covered. You can always call your insurance and list the tests off and ask if they are covered. You can also ask what type of diagnosis code do they need to have it covered or what they doctor needs to use to get it covered. It could all come down to how it’s worded. If you know after calling and it’s covered, you can ask for the tests. If the doctor tries to pull the “it may not be covered” card (meaning they don’t know what to do with the results) or they say no then, ask them to please document in your chart all the tests that your asking for and that they are refusing to order them. Then ask for a print out copy of it in your summary when you leave. (By that time they will most likely order it). If it sounds like that’s the case, then you’ll want to know how to Interpret where your labs should be. To know what to ask for. I’ve been in a similar situation years ago when I knew something was wrong and had symptoms and even had a higher TSH and my doctor didn’t want to do anything but “watch it” and I felt horrible. I hope maybe some of that is helpful, I just feel bad when people feel awful and doctors brush it off.

What can you do if your Dr refuses to do these tests because your basic labs are "in range" and you have Kaiser insurance? Where can I get these run and am I going to have to spend several hundred dollars out of pocket to see a naturopath and also pay for the tests out of pocket? Are we looking at $500 or $600 dollars? It's really discouraging.

The sad thing is this .. I live in Cape Town South Africa and most of the doctors will say "what are you talking about". My GP just tests my TSH and T4. I once ticked off my own form after getting it from my doctor .. added a few tests and he was like "what did you do that for" and could not explain it to me.

You should go see Dr Grant Fourie in Durbanville, or find another BHRT Doctor in your area. They will sort you out in no time. My doc up here in GP is amazing with this stuff. GOOD LUCK!

Don't settle for feeling sub-par for the rest of your life. Unless you really want to. There is always, always a way. If a single conventional endocrinologist is refusing to help you, that doesn't mean just give up. Find out all you can about your condition and possible solutions so you can go see a new doctor (preferably not a conventional one) with knowledge and empowerment.

He did a video a while ago talking about some of these. The “sweet spot” for reverse t3 is between 9-10. You want your free t3 to be in the upper end of the range. - For myself my reverse t3 was at 20. It now down to 11. I feel a lot better. My free t3 is slowing going up. If I remember correctly - in his video he said when your reverse t3 is high it will keep your free t3 down. To get my reverse t3 down- I switched from Levothyroxine to Armour thyroid. It helped a little. Then after seeing the video and asking questions on a thyroid forum, I was put on liothyronine. So now I take armour and liothyronine. This past week I started taking the liothyronine in a compound form to see if that helps any. I don’t know if that helps at all 🤷‍♀️but maybe pointing you in the right direction.

@@ajatracy1299 I am on Armour now. Adding T3 gave me heart palps and problems sleeping. I don't understand why TSH is suppressed when the hormones are not even mid range, in fact total T3 is low. Free T3 is almost mid range but total T3 is out of range low? My SHBG is out of range high. Looking at my TSH and SHBG one would expect to see high free Ts. But they aren't even mid range. That's what I don't understand.

@@landslide82 I am sorry. I am not sure about the SHGB. I have had mine tested (like testosterone/ estrogen) alone but I don’t think I’ve had the SHGB test. I had the same issue with adding t3 in the beginning with heart palpitations. My doctor ended up lowering my Armour dose and kept the added t3. I started on Liothyronine 5 mcg, and then my doctor said it went to 20 or 25 for the next dosage to move up. He didn’t want to do that because of the heart palpitations. He agreed to let me move to 10 mcg. I was just taking 2 pills (5mcg) each. Mid day- so armour when I first woke up and 2 liothyronine around noon. It worked with no problem. I wanted to try and move to 15 mcg (because my reverse t3 is at 11 and my free t3 is still on the lower end) he said No and is having me try compound liothyronine 10 mcg, that one I take 30 mins after armour. I have noticed a few heart palpitations 😬. And I am falling asleep later then normal, but I didn’t want to write it off yet until I was sure. (I’am also on the keto diet- so when my electrolytes are off it can give heart palpitations too🤷‍♀️.

@@ajatracy1299 Thanks for sharing your experiences. Can I ask what dose your Armour is? I know no one dose is right for everyone, but I am curious as to what works for others. I am at 1 1/2 grains now. Slowly went to 2 and the palps were unbearable, even after a couple weeks. I understand we are just sharing info here, and no one is trying to prescribe anything. I did so well on Naturethroid until 2018 and NP until 2019. Been a nightmare since then. Thanks again for sharing.

@@landslide82 Yes, I am on Armour 90. When my doctor put my dose of Armour at 120, I had heart palps and it was hard to sleep. He moved me back down to 90. After being on 90 for a month I went back in for a blood draw and then had learned where my labs needed to be. My doctor new my free t3 was in range but low, he didn't realize that the reverse t3 was high (even though within range). So i asked if he would be willing to try adding on cytomel to see if that would help bring down my reverse t3. He started me on liothyronine 5 mcg, I waited 6 weeks and did a blood draw and then went up to 10 mcg. I am currently still on Armour 90 and Liothyronine 10 mcg. I recently switched to a compound for Liothronine. I didn't have any issues taking it in pill form from the pharmacy (cvs). Now the compound kind- ive started getting heart pals (slightly) and some insomnia. So i am not sure what the deal is. Maybe its stronger? I am going to try and make it through this week with it and see if it will level out or ill have to do labs and see whats going on. I may need to switch back to non-compound *** I also wanted to add (if i didnt before) when I took the pharmacy type of liothyronine - I took it around noon. Armour was first thing in the morning. Now I take Armour and wait 30 minutes and then take the Liothyronine.

You are correct in that it is meant to be communicated that its the free T3- as I believe he intended but it came out wrong initially, but was corrected to follow.
