@jonni129

@@gregor2436 Mecklenburg wird genauso ausgesprochen. Die meisten Deutschen lassen sich aber von der Schreibweise ins Bockshorn jagen. Das -e- wird trotz ck lang gesprochen. Question on Mecklenburg-Vorpommern pronunciation: you prounenced the e in "Meck..." sharp, like the first e in "Esel", but the spelling hints at something like "Ecke".
@rewboss
@rewboss Жыл бұрын
Right; the local pronunciation is as I said it. The "c" was actually added relatively recently: German went through a period where it became fashionable to add random extra letters for no good reason. A few of these spellings stuck: "Stadt" is one. You'll find examples in people's names, like "Nollendorff" and "Yorck". The city of Lübeck also has an extra "c" and should be pronounced with a long "e". The "-be(c)k" ending on place names is common in northern Germany, and if you look closer to Hamburg you'll find lots of places where the original spelling has been restored: "Wandsbek", for example. And "Mecklenburg" is another example where the quirky spelling remains.

Complicated historical reasons, but basically those three cities have a special "city-state" status. Actually, Bremen is even more complicated, because the state consists of two cities separated from each other by about 50 km or so.
@vsmash2
@vsmash2 Жыл бұрын
If i understand you correctly, you are asking why the city states are city states? The land surrounding Bremen and Hamburg is not part of them. They are cities that are states in and on themselves. And only themselves. As for why that is? Historical reasons, The countries, kingdoms and dukedoms, and city states arranged themselves again and again multiple times until we got what we have today. The tree city states are all that is left over. That includes Berlin, not as a capital but a city state.
@ichabodstrange756
@ichabodstrange756 Жыл бұрын
Berlin and Hamburg are Germany's largest cities. Both have populations in the millions and are easily large enough to have their own administrative system. Bremen is indeed the odd one out as it is neither particulary big nor particulary important. When Germany was devided by the Allies, all the occupying powers had easy access to their territory (either through landborders or seaports) - except for the U.S. which occupied south-eastern Germany. They asked the British (who occupied the north-western coastal provinces) for a coastal city to make logistics easier for them. That coastal city was Bremen. Therefore Bremen was run autonomously from the surrounding British provinces. And when Germany was refounded, Bremen kept that status. That is the "in a nutshell" version at least.
@97Kok
@97Kok Жыл бұрын
Thank you everyone for your explanations. Since Germany works under a federal system, does that mean that one of these city states can pass a law that just them follows? For example if Hamburg suddenly decided to legalize weed? If so, are there any such "weird" laws between german lands in general?

Why didnt they merge niedersachsen and Bremen or some other tiny ones?
@rewboss
@rewboss Жыл бұрын
There was an attempt to merge Berlin and Brandenburg back in the 1990s. The problem was that Brandenburg is a sparsely-populated rural state, and Brandenburgers worried that their needs and concerns would be ignored in such a super-state as everything would be focused on Berlin. Instead, they now form the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. This means they both retain their state legislatures and therefore their autonomy, but cooperate on matters of mutual interest, such as the transport infrastructure. It's a system that seems to be working reasonably well.
