Trained shotokan between ages 8 and 14...late 80s early 90....was the thing all of us did ..made me better in sports and school.....we used to test once a year....i left when i had blue belt...at university and post unoversity i trained in judo and achieved Dan grade..but now at 44....i feel my body needs karate...needs kata and peace....just for the sake of lifetime health ...2025 will get a gi, train on my own, and then find a dojo and join...thanks for bringing back good old memories 🙏

I practiced Karate since I was a kid, I think i was like 4 years old, and I managed to arrive to black belt but a year ago I decided to stop, I now understand the mistake I made and I'm reviewing some things that I don't really remember to get back at practicing it, and your videos are being very helpful. Thank you so much, Oss Sensei

I wish someone would do a video of how to reduce knee and elbow wear and tear from Shotokan. I'm getting back into it at the age of 53 and kicking the air as I did when I was young, is proving to be much more physically demanding. The extra weight is also an issue but not an easy one to deal with. More weight leads to exponential impact. Apparently, punching and kicking into thin air while locking the joints is actually really bad for joints and it's a matter of lottery as to when arthritis will hit you. Age also doesn't help. People talk about not extending the kicks or punches the full way or hitting a bag but I don't have a bag. Do you know of any people who are older like me and how they deal with training to avoid injury? I do 2 warmups - the standard karate one and then rolling and stabilization and warm up exercises. A single injury and this will be over - a long-term pain is also not desirable and would defeat the benefits of doing karate. At the very least, I'm thinking of getting 2 knee braces and one ankle brace which will restrict the movement of the leg at the end. I've thought of modifying the katas. I trained in Tang Soo Do a lifetime ago and I recall the katas being much easier to do and obviously easier on the body. I could lift my stance much higher and do the katas with less kime focusing on the technique but I find it very hard not to go full speed or do a full stance. Everything in shotokan is a knee-killer 🙂 Let's look at an oizuki. You turn the hip, push off the rear leg, shift the weight over the front leg, then push off the front leg as it becomes the rear leg (the scissor action that leads to full speed) and then the rear leg has to instantly absorb all the speed and plant.

Reversed view. Mirror image view messes me up. Works fine for some people,...I think. I can't watch unfortunately.

I recently had surgery on my wrist and put a titiaum bracket due to kumite, will i still be able to join karate again ?

Yes, you must not give up. Focus on recovery, and gradually start to build enough strength to train again. Wish you the best!
