Actually Oliver And Company was such a good success for the studio, it reinstated Disney’s faith in their animation company and made them want to keep making animated movies, leading into the Disney Renaissance. Alongside that it was the first time Howard Ashman (who made the songs of The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, and Aladdin) made a song for Disney. Oliver In Company is the unsung hero of Disney, even if the movie is average.
@jclkaytwo
@jclkaytwo 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you're confusing oliver and company with the great mouse detective here. after the bomb that was the black cauldron, great mouse detective's success is what encouraged the studio to keep going, and brought forth the renaissance. oliver and company just came out between them. it wasn't the catalyst.
@jamescoppock4448
@jamescoppock4448 2 жыл бұрын
I've been told that The Great Mouse Detective got overshadowed by An American Tail and Oliver & Company got overshadowed by The Land Before Time. Don Bluth's competitive nature is what pushed Disney to try harder in order to get back on top. The Disney Renaissance probably wouldn't have been as good if it weren't for Don Bluth

@@antoniamcgregor3285 You are all right. People think of the 80s as a dark age for animation. It was actually quite the reverse. Hanna Barberra, Filmation and countless other studios were producing Saturday morning cartoons. WB kept on airing classic Looney Tunes cartoons and classic DIsney was found on their syndicated specials and on the Disney channel while they were producing Ducktales and Recue Rangers for the afternoons. Disney was finding itself after Walt died but thanks to Eisner and Katz they were making considerable progress with both the Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company (the latter I remember was a big deal to see in theaters because of Billy Joel). But yes Don Bluth was the king of animation in the 80s. Just looked who was working with him back then and not Disney: Spielberg and Lucas. When I hear 80s theatrical animated movies I think of the Secret of Nihm, American Tale and Land Before Time, but you also think of the Fox and the Hound as well as the Last Unicorn. The Little Mermaid didn't come out until the end of 89 and really was the start of something new. Between Mermaid and Aladdin Disney was once more at the top and Bluth was now playing catch up.

@@gars129 I don’t know. Brother Bear was loved by my fellow high school class mates when it came out in the early 00’s. I enjoyed it. I thought it was really good. For the longest time I thought everyone loved the movie as much as I did especially since it got a sequel that I have not seen. I was shocked that the film is hated as much as some people love it. I have no idea why it’s so divisive. Maybe it’s the lack of a villain. There is no actual bad guy in Brother Bear and maybe that’s the issue.
@jackj9070
@jackj9070 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly really shocked to see Brother Bear so low. That one is one of favorites of the lot. I don't really see why the over serious tone at the start would be a flaw when to me it's quite clearly intentional for the story its telling where a young arrogant man is sent on a journey where he has to learn how to love through the eye view of something he hates, contrasted with his older brother who's blinded by hate all because of his love for his brother. I find a lot of it extremely compelling. Not sure what you find so dull with the animation either since it's intentionally brightened up and given a larger aspect ratio after the bear transformation scene (and that scene in itself I think is one of the best animated sequences in all of Disney animation), not to mention the backgrounds are so good that they often look as if they're painted. Phil Collins soundtrack is also fantastic. I feel like a lot of the same can be said for Tarzan too (which I'd argue is also very serious at times, but also has its fair share of kiddy humor), so I'm a little lost on why you think that film is so much more superior. It pains me that even a film like Home on the Range made more of an impact on you. But hey, it's your list! It's always interesting to see how much all of our opinions can differ on these films. We all grew up with these films differently too, so that's something to put into account also.

KEEP IN MIND | Disney Animation tend to make movies which define and shape peoples childhoods. As children we tend to watch movies on loop. So whatever films you watched as a child tend to have overwhelming connection to. Thus, when you were born and what movies you had access to will dramatically shift your ranking of these films. Some people seem really surprised at some of my bottom 20 (Brother Bear). I watched many of these for the first time in the last few years. In some cases (Brother Bear), I'm pretty surprised to learn which movies people take issue with being in my bottom 20.

WOW. I suspected most of these but some picks here COMPLETELY threw me for a loop. Still, I think you've reasonably justified your stances and I completely respect them. Disney is not a great studio, but they have made some great, industry-defining films and you taking on this journey is still one heck of a ride, especially the Wartime Era. Oh boy. My Bottom 20 (with reasons!): 60. Chicken Little (Every decision is either very poorly executed, awkwardly written, or bland, genuinely horrible. Shame that director Mark Dindal could've gone places had it not been for this.) 59. Saludos Amigos (Literal imperialist propaganda, like some of the visuals but it's pretty terrible.) 58. Home On the Range (This one annoys me to no end in every single way. Even Alan Menken's music was unmemorable.) 57. Make Mine Music (Peter & the Wolf is a solid segment but I don't remember anything else from this one sadly.) 56. Melody Time (Should be more exciting but extremely offensive and strangely boring.) 55. Fun & Fancy Free (Despite being longer and better-paced, both stories are very unexciting.) 54. The Sword in the Stone (Tonally whacked out with unexciting characters, animation, narrative, and jokes) 53. The 3 Caballeros (Much better than most of the other package films simply because it takes more creative risks and backs off the propaganda to some degree) 52. Ralph Breaks the Internet (Maybe not as poorly produced as the ones below it but it is so thoroughly disrespectful of the first film and feels so corporately made that it genuinely frustrates me. The Menken musical number and princess sequence rock though.) 51. Pocahontas (Uninteresting narrative and the most boring characters in spite of interesting animation and fantastic music.) 50. The Rescuers Down Under (Average and completely forgettable narrative despite a solid start and immersive flying sequences.) 49. Dinosaur (It's great until the characters start talking and gets even worse once the inciting event happens. The journey has no flavour despite its best attempts. James Newton Howard's score is rousing and the animation idea is interesting, but isn't good overall.) 48. Brother Bear (I actually really like the setup and the journey itself has a couple of decent moments but Phil Collins's contributions are so jarring and the narrative loses its way very quickly after that start.) 47. Oliver & Co. (There are some solid tunes and the characters have tons of potential but the moment everyone comes together, it quickly gets annoying and forgettable.) 46. Frozen 2 (Tons and tons and tons of story potential that would've been better than the original had it not been so squandered, rushed, and pandering. Songs, animation, and voice cast are great but pretty much nothing else works.) 45. Bolt (Some of the most bizarre celebrity casting meet a subpar road comedy and I enjoyed the ending, but literally nothing else.) 44. Cinderella (A couple of truly brilliant and majestic sequences make up for a bizarrely unprioritized narrative with classic wonderbread princess & prince, and irritating side characters that may have been tarnished by Alvin & the Chipmunks.) 43. Alice in Wonderland (Some of the studio's finest animation meets an impossible-to-invest narrative. This story works so perfectly for this studio but I wish it could've been more compelling.) 42. Robin Hood (Some of the studio's weakest animation meets a fair story. I find it to be really fantastic and work in some sequences and the ones that don't are a real slog.) 41. The Princess & the Frog (Maybe 3 of Randy Newman's songs are fantastic but the rest are sorta midtier and mostly thrown in during the first half-hour. The tone & pace as a whole bounces around far too much and both of the side characters are really irritating but the central chemistry, insanely wacky villain and animation direction are certainly strong enough to keep it afloat) Excited for part 2!

@@jacindaellison3363 Thank you! Also this is actually a really good idea that I hadn't thought of at all. I could totally see this as a Frozen Season 2 (The massive changes in tone and atmosphere feel like Season 2 TV stuff) and yeah with 5-7 episodes, I could easily see the lore becoming so much richer and the emotions so much deeper and earned, especially because I think it's so frustratingly close to being great. Maybe it'd also convince them to drop the Hans references earlier on. I'm curious, what are some of your least favourite Disney films?

@@jblitz1556 Yeah, Frozen 2 is like if Avatar: the Last Airbender was put into an ok but poorly made movie. I haven't seen alot of Disney animated movies but my least favorite I've seen since last year are: Home on the Range: D- (story is cliche, the characters were uninteresting, and the animation is ok The Black Cauldron: D- (cliche story, felt too short, animation that's nice but not all that special, and a cast of bland forgettable characters, with Taran being the worst because he does nothing but brag about how he can be a warrior without even proving anything-he didn't even really defeat the Horn King!) Chicken Little: F (that story is just chock full of unlikable characters, including one of the worst animated parents I've even seen-Buck Cluck-none of the characters are engaging, including Chicken's friends of himself included

@@jacindaellison3363 Another great analogy. Seems like Chicken Little is the real clucker in almost everyone's list, but for good reason. Admittedly, I have not watched Brother Bear in probably 10 years, I remember enjoying it enough to be satisfied. The tone shift is something that many disney animated movies struggle with, so I can understand that critique. Bambi on the other hand…. This movie is an all-time classic and imo, one of the best hand drawn animations ever… The simplicity of the narrative and powerful overarching message with the impressive animation makes for a beautiful film.
