A very interesting top 20. Major kudos to Sean for managing to fit these 60 films into his endlessly busy schedule. Seems like it was a great journey, especially when we get to these films. Really surprised to see how many pre-Renaissance flicks made the top 20, and particularly which ones reached the top 10. Goes to show how much these stories are subjective. Also, fun that you've memorized Alice in Wonderland without knowing it, that's always fun! My Top 20: 20. Zootopia (Very fun buddy comedy taking place in an interesting world despite some drag in the middle and far-too-overt metaphor, despite the appreciated attempt at it.) 19. Encanto (Dynamic dynamics, romping animation and songs, and solid journey make for a nice film and that's enough.) 18. Wreck-It Ralph (An extremely well-defined set of characters (including the only great twist villain Disney has ever done) and worlds build a supremely rewatchable adventure.) 17. Winnie the Pooh (Everything Sean said about the original applies here. Its simple, clever, self-aware pleasures make for a summer Saturday afternoon delight.) 16. The Great Mouse Detective (Sly story, charismatic characters, and daring direction elevate this from being decent to great. A great sign of things to come while still feeling like pre-Renaissance Disney.) 15. Aladdin (Mash an undeniably charming romance, a madcap supporting character and villain, and extremely dynamic songs and we get a heartwarming journey that does slog a bit in the start but quickly gains traction.) 14. The Little Mermaid (A triumphant classic in nearly every way; powerful songs, manic villains, a solid protagonist, and iconic side characters complete with sequences of wonder, in spite of a semi-shallow prince and ending which goes too far.) 13. 101 Dalmatians (The comic strip-style of this adds an extra layer of charm and makes the opening act of this endlessly charming and immersive, allowing the rest of the semi-scattered journey to feel weighted and emotional. Real storytelling at play here.) 12. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (The characters speak in exhausting exposition but the sense of adventure and pulp are too strong to ignore. Animation rocks.) 11. Tangled (Disney's 50th film feels like a loving homage to their past and yet refreshingly modern. Most of the studio's finest technical aspects are on display and with a cast of characters like this, it's difficult to hate.) 10. Pinocchio (Story goes in too many places but I think that works wonders in creating a genuinely horrifying fairytale that makes its moments of sweetness all the more believable. Songs and characters are eternal.) 9. Mulan (Villain aside, this is an extremely compelling narrative helped immeasurably by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith's score. Disney's formula is given new life in this exciting tale of worth.) 8. The Emperor's New Groove (Feature-length Chuck Jones is a delirious joy. Quite possibly the most ADHD film on this list but I think every decision is so strongly set in Kuzco's perspective that the change feels natural and earned. Yzma is the victim here, that is the point.) 7. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Gargoyles and horrid tone-balancing hold this back from being a masterpiece. Goes in unexpectedly gothic places and absolutely invests everything it has into this world, its hero, villain, and especially its songs. Design and animation are stunning here.) 6. Moana (Good ol' fashioned story given intense emotional depth and great energy thanks to lead chemistry, gorgeous animation, earworm songs, and kinetic direction.) These are the great films: 5. Lilo & Stitch (This invests incredible energy into developing its leads and making us empathize with their very real situations. It's honest and hilarious and heartwarming and offbeat and quirky and ridiculously endearing.) 4. Bambi (Almost like Winnie the Pooh, it's the simplicity that makes this work so well. Watching Bambi grow and slowly adjust to the world is such a pleasure because of the iconic side characters encouraging them to learn. Setting this against an extremely evocative, elemental world creates an inviting and immersive atmosphere, with a slap-bang ending to cap it all off.) 3. Beauty & the Beast (The quintessential Disney princess film, mostly handled with elegant craft and genuine care for this developing romance and the characters who get folded into it. Everyone is exquisitely animated to emphasize the best/worst parts of their personality, just as with the backdrops and so the simplistic storytelling feels layered and genuine as a result. It builds to moments of pure cinematic joy.) 2. Fantasia (Yeah, so completely disagree with Sean. Some of the finest animation the medium has ever seen along with some of the greatest music ever created makes for extremely expressionistic, balletic sequences. There are a couple of poor ones, but the rest are all-time great sequences of humour, macabre horror, whimsicality, and power. The only time I've transcended while watching a Disney film, and it's well-deserved. The theatrical experience was made for this film.) 1. The Lion King (Once again all-time great animation meets a grand story with expressive, iconic characters, all with genuine turmoil, a brilliant song to complement them, and absurd levels of energy. This could've so easily gone wrong had it not been treated with the absolute utmost care, and so good thing it was.)

My top 10 #10: The Princess and the Frog Probably the only princess film I rewatched and enjoyed as a kid. With how it takes the classic fairy tale of the Frog Prince and really goes the mile with it. Tiana is my favorite Disney princess, the music is shocking underrated, and the animation is on par with some of the Renaissance films. #9: Brother Bear Is the film tonally confused at times? Yes. Does the film dip in quality after the first act? Sure. Do I care in the slightest? Hell, no. I still think this film is really entertaining and charming. #8: Aladdin The way this film plays with it’s fantasy world is pretty clever and funny. Plus, Robin Williams performance is golden. Rest in peace, Robin. You’ll never be forgotten. #7: Dumbo I remember watching this film a lot as a kid and enjoying again and again and again. And I still think it holds up really well in my opinion. #6: Mulan Definitely my favorite princess film with it’s likable protagonist, Chinese atmosphere, laugh out loud comedy, and very dark and bone shivering moments. #5: Zootopia This film really had the guts to go deep with its themes. And even outside of that, this film is still really entertaining. #4: The Emperor’s New Groove One of the funniest animated movies I’ve ever seen. The humor is on point and well executed and how the characters interact is easily memorable and quotable. #3: Wreck it Ralph Now this is a film that feels right up my ally. As a huge video game fanatic, I can say this is one of Disney best films from the modern decade. #2: The Lion King The grand scale of this film make it an experience that people have to see on the big screen to believe. I remember my first full viewing of the film in the theaters back in 2011 and was blown away. #1: Lilo and Stitch I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO-O-O-O-O-O MUCH!!! The family drama is heart-felt and touching, the alien aspect is really engaging and exciting, the animation and atmosphere is beautiful and gorgeous. I can’t think of a single thing wrong with this movie…AT ALL!

Here’s my top 10 Disney movies 1. Lion king (it would be sacrilegious if I didn’t show my future kids this masterpiece) 2. Aladdin (RIP Robin Williams 😭) 3. Beauty and the beast (Tale as old as time) 4. Moana (familiar but fresh plot, awesome characters, and great music by Lin-Manuel Miranda) 5. Zootopia (great character chemistry and an original plot with a very deep message of racism and prejudice. High risk, HIGH reward) 6. Mulan (fantastic character that I can weirdly relate considering I am a man. Also I love “I’ll make a man outta you”) 7. Lilo and stitch (this is my go to 2000’s Disney flick because of the nostalgia it give me and the Elvis song spark my love for the king) 8. Brother Bear (Another 2000’s movie I have big nostalgia because of the original story and beautiful landscapes) 9. Atlantis: The lost empire (this movie is super underrated and is DUE for a life-action remake.) 10. Wreck-it Ralph (perfect movie for the Gamers) Phew 😮‍💨. What do you think?

The list has been fun to watch! I agree with Beauty and the Beast being top 3 Disney films but I have go to bat for what I think is another top 3 film: Fantasia. I think that movie is a masterpiece of a film, and it so artfully blends moving artwork with the auditory art of classical music. But I’m also a big music person so I have to admit that bias. I guess it’s not for everyone but I would still put Fantasia in the top 3 of Disney films.

Love your list; absolutely love Zootopia and Big Hero 6 and Wreck it Ralph. My critique is that Lion King never drew me in ... bratty kid who stupidly blames himself for his dad's death and then runs away. Timon and Pumbaa are too over the top to be funny. Also love stories with anthropomorphic animals are just creepy.

Great job Sean! This is a very difficult ranking. Really, chicken little is the only Disney movie i thought was just bad all together. (Home on the range is the only one I’ve never seen, but I’ve heard bad things) honestly, the other 58 movies are all enjoyable, maybe flawed, but enjoyable.

Personally my top 3 are Hercules, Encanto, and Lilo and Stitch Hercules: This one is probably just barely above Encanto, this is mostly able to stay here off nostalgia and Hades being my favorite Disney villain, I first watched it when I was really into mythology and I loved it, but it's probably the only one of my top 5 overall movies where I don't relate to the main character all that much Encanto: Encanto was just a movie that I all around adored, I thought the animation was gorgeous, Mirabel was relatable, the songs weren't the best Disney songs, but still on point, and I loved everything about it Lilo and Stitch: Another nostalgia factor one, Stitch is absolutely one of my favorite Disney characters of all time and while it's been a while since I watched it I found it very enjoyable and heart warming

I was just watching this video a second time, and during the Peter Pan segment, Sean says 'Indians'. Being an actual Indian (a person from India), and knowing how that term is not particularly good for talking about Native Americans, it sounded very awkward. But I'm willing to assume that Sean was not having any malice when he said that, and take it as just a mistake. I'm not mad Sean, but it sounded awkward.

23:34 The Lion King is my favorite too. Always has been. This and the Land Before Time are my favorite childhood movies, but while The Lion King is my favorite Disney film, the Land Before Time just edges it out, simply for how they dealt with the death of the main character's parent. Both Mufasa and Little Foot's Mother (who I will be referring to as Tree Star) both died trying to save their child, with both kids watching their parents die in front of them. However, I think the death of Tree Star is just a little more effective than the more iconic death of Mufasa. With the death of Mufasa, Simba found him already dead, and just a few minutes later, he's singing that STUPID Hakuna Matata song. Little Foot, on the other hand, found Tree Star on the verge of death, speaking to her just before she died right in front of him. And unlike Simba, Little Foot sulked around for a lot longer before perking up again when he meets Ducky. We get to see Little Foot's grief for much longer than Simba's, which is what makes Tree Star's death just a little more sad than Mufasa's.

Great list!! While I can appreciate your opinion I’m not the biggest fan of Frozen 2 and idk if I would ever consider putting it in top 10 let alone top 20. While the visuals and songs are certainly good, that’s really all it’s got going for it. The story telling for that film is all over the place and I don’t see it being nearly talked about as the first film. What saddens me too is if you watch the deleted scenes you can tell they had a really good film in mind that seemed it was gonna go deeper in both story and character but sadly what we got was a boring film.
