I'll admit, I was shocked to see Hunchback of Notre Dame so low. That is one of my favorite Disney movies. I thought it did a very nice job of exploring dark themes, but also giving a sense of hope that things can get better (and trust me, the Disney movie is not nearly as dark as the play version.) Also the music in Hunchback of Notre Dame is So Beautiful (I think its soundtrack alone should have been enough to move it up a couple of spots). Still, great video. I love watching your movie rankings.

Sean, you seem like a genuinely nice guy, so I can see why the films that feature such harsh treatment of their protagonists are lower on your list. With Lady and the Tramp, I argue that actually works in its favor. Lady is a character living the charmed life, privileged, protected and naive. She’s easy prey for the world outside, and Tramp helps her become more worldly, while she helps Tramp become devoted and domesticated. But if you want to argue that Aunt Sarah is the most insufferable Disney character, I won’t argue haha
@kelleyceccato70252 жыл бұрын
Re: The Princess and the Frog -- I'm inclined to agree with your wife. I actually like Dr. Facilier (thanks largely to the voice he's given by Keith David, who can do little wrong in my book) and his villain song. I would certainly rank it ahead of Pocahontas, which is more a message with a movie in it than a movie with a message in it. Re: "product of its time" -- That's why I find the early films fascinating. They're a window onto a different time, and I love to watch them and see how we've changed, not only in the art of animation but in our culture as well. Agree about Lilo and Stitch: the story of the sisters (both wonderful characters) is more compelling than the alien threat/invasion plot. Moana is my favorite Disney film of the 2010s. I'd put it well ahead of Frozen, which I loved when I first saw it but didn't hold up for me on rewatch. But hey! It looks like the underrated TANGLED makes the top 20!

For those wanting advice on how to make this list (which is probably what this guy did)... is just put all the Disney movies in 3 piles. A Top 20, mid tier, and bottom 20. Then just put each movie in each pile in the order you want. It's that simple yo. 😁
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout2 жыл бұрын
This is..... basically exactly what I did! But BEFORE I started putting them in the 3 piles, I watched through each of the eras and I ranked the eras. The movies in each era are pretty easy to rank for the obvious reason that they came out in the same window of time. Between starting with the eras pre-ranked and using the 3 piles, it goes REALLY fast. Then once I have the full list, I got back through and ask myself, "What are the HOTTEST TAKES in each pile?" And I make sure I agree with my hot take and give a defense of it. I don't mind having hot takes, but I want to be self aware of when I'm the person with the wild opinion.

Stories like Lady & the Tramp, Pinocchio, and Dumbo work for me, because there actually are people who abuse animals and children, and in these movies, it makes the protagonists more sympathetic and the final payoff better. The trick is to not make it super dark, like none of these characters was actually physically beaten, which would not be a story I would want to spend time with.

Those are my 3 biggest upsets, though my 15-20 were also all knocked out here being Emperor's New Groove, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Robin Hood, Moana, The Jungle Book, and Bolt, though with those 6 I can understand more why you have them a bit lower. Recently, my best friend suggested that Lilo is ADHD. She's certainly externally hyperactive, imaginative and outspoken, but I don't know...is it because she's ADHD, or because she's a little girl that's just gone through a tragedy and is still adjusting to having no parents. I mean, you can just tell early in the scene that neither sister is used to being in that relationship where Nani is the parental figure and Lilo is still the child. There's several moments where it's clear that they are having trouble balancing guardian and dependent with their relationship as sisters.

Definitely some more surprises here but I can definitely feel the bar of quality begin to slim between each placement for Sean's list. The good stuff is here, and the takes will just get more passionate moving forward, which is awesome. The biggest shock was seeing which of the Golden Age films make the top 20. Really did not think it'd be as high as it will be. Excited for the finale! My Middle 20: 45-41 (Just to recap): Bolt, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood, Princess & the Frog 40. The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad (The Mr. Toad segment is very mediocre and quite unmemorable. The Ichabod segment is magnificent though. Characterizations are simple and made to build towards a gorgeously horrific finale. Few animated scenes are as charged as these.) 39. Dumbo (The quintessential less than the sum of its parts; Baby Mine is a beautiful song and emotional moment, Pink Elephants on Parade is wonderfully surreal and bouncy; the opening is charming and gives each animal great characterization, but none of it comes together in the slightest.) 38. The Rescuers (Leads with solid chemistry and decent finale make up for a very sluggish middle) 37. The Aristocats (Characters are semi-memorable and the 'Everybody Wants to be a Cat' segment is delightful, but ultimately weightless.) 36. Big Hero 6 (Brilliant until Tadashi dies, where it devolves into an unfunny, bland superhero story with a hilarious and hamfisted twist.) 35. Frozen (Works enough when Kristoff, Anna, and Sven are together but doesn't seem to know what it's doing with just about anyone else. Songs are catchy and the voice cast brings so much charm but it can't save a hankered story.) 34. The Black Cauldron (Plot and characters are unbelievably bland but my goodness is this a marvel of animation. Would've loved to see the intended version of this because it would've been a brilliant exercise in style.) 33. Peter Pan (It's just fine. I know people love this one and I really wish I could explain what keeps me at such a distance, but alas it's just the way I feel.) 32. Snow White & the Legend of the 7 Dwarfs (Story is neither here nor there despite this being one of the most expressively animated films there have been. The Dwarfs, animals, and certain environments are so distinctly defined and have so much personality that it makes up for the empty story.) 31. Lady & the Tramp (Agreed that it works well enough as we go through it but I come out the other end remembering very little.) 30. The Fox & the Hound (The first bit when they're children is toothachingly-sweet and attempts to say something interesting about the nature of friendship but only gives the beginning and end instead of the middle.) 29. Raya & the Last Dragon (Loads of potential with the interesting lore, great action, animation, and score; shame that the characters are dull and the fetch quest nature of the story allows for nothing to feel as fleshed out as it should.) 28. Tarzan (Phil Collins's songs really don't work for me, nor do the side characters but the central romance and animation are strong enough to make up for that.) 27. Meet the Robinsons (Very clever story idea and expressive characters lack nuance and much development.) 26. Treasure Planet (Some of Disney's most nuanced characters, brilliant world design, and kinetic direction meet wildly underdeveloped storylines, annoying characters, and a second-half that doesn't pay off as much as it should.) 25. Fantasia 2000 (Numerous profoundly beautiful segments anchor mostly tone-breaking celebrity segues and other segments which are either ill-conceived or uninteresting. Rhapsody in Blue and The Firebird are all-time great sequences.) 24. Hercules (An unstoppable energy defines this thing and propels its effective story, songs, and design in spite of an unfortunate adherence to formula, particularly in a film dedicated to dethroning commercialism.) 23. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Endlessly charming and simplistic. The best of the package films off of sheer lack of ambition.) Now we're starting to get to the good stuff. 22. Sleeping Beauty (Probably one of the most fleshed-out pre-Renaissance films. The central romance feels a bit more genuine and the character bonds stronger, making it a tad more emotional which helps charge the finale along with the gorgeous visuals.) 21. The Jungle Book (I think the vignetted structure helps convey the vastness of the jungle and the confusion of Mowgli's identity crisis. The sheer volume of dynamic characters and good Sherman Bros soundtrack make this a very enjoyable watch. Sure it wasn't all necessary and thinly tied together, but I think the segments themselves are enjoyable enough to surpass that.) Part 3 will be fun.

17:40 I LOVED Lilo & Stitch from the cute Aliens to the sister dynamic to moral of Ohana means Family to the sci-fyi adventure so to me Lilo & Stitch is in my top 5 or Top 10 Favorite Disney Animated movies same with Moana and The Little Mermaid

Surprised on Hercules, Emperor's New Groove, Princess & the Frog, Little Mermaid, & Lilo & Stitch the most. I know many people who have all of these at #1.List vs mine is showing the difference of age and having kids vs not having kids

Aww the "Moana Phase". My 30 year old roommate almost sold everything he owns to buy a sale boat. Every now and then he still talks about that dream. Moana changed that man.

This is the part of the list where we really start to diverge it seems, lol. At least in terms of a few movies that I rank considerably higher. Looking forward to the top 20 on Thursday!

My most mid tier Disney films The Hunchback of Notre Dame - The atmosphere of the film is breathtaking. But for the most part, I was just lost for most of this film. Fantasia 2000 - This to me felt like an improvement over the original is some instances such as bigger and better segments. But some of the issues I had with the original do carry over to this film. Chicken Little - I found the Baseball and Alien portions of the film really entertaining, but the mean-spirited nature and lack-luster animation makes it hard for me to enjoy it entirely

Love these kind of lists you do, I agree with most only 3 I would elevate to my top 20 are fox & hound (1st disney film I saw as child), Hercules, and Moana.

I loved the original 101 Dalmations and I'm not much of a dog lover since I love cats. 101 would be in my Top 20 but since I agree with what you said I'd put it higher on my mid-tier. Cruella Deville is a classic villan though. U gotta recognize.

You know, there’s a deleted scene from The Emperor’s New Groove that would have made you hate Kuzco more. In a deleted scene, he had his guards smash models of Pacha’s house. It was cut for 2 reasons: 1. It was too dark for kids. 2. It would have pushed Kuzco past the point of redemption.

Gargoyles were not supposed to exist. Or they weren't supposed to be so "comical". If they had done so, The hunchback of Notre Dame would have been the perfect masterpiece it deserves to be
