I feel if all of Boris' armies were immune to chaos attrition and not just him it'd be a lot easier to expand in the wastes. It wouldn't make him a S tier powerhouse but it'd get him out of D tier at the minimum. Expanding is difficult when you lose units every turn unless you always give up range to encamp

Norsca may lack content or modern mechanics, but Throgg and Wulfrik are still amazing and Throgg giving his entire army immunity to all forms of attrition makes so many army compositions he leads super effective, not just mass Trolls.

The game devs calling The Empire a "begining faction" is like calling Dark Souls "babys first game." Yeah they're powerful, but it's beyond painful

The only reson why the Empire is recomended as a starter faction is becouse of how insanely popular it is rather then actually being a good starter faction. The imperial authority mechanic is by far less punishing then it was in WH2 but your still pretty mutch have enemys coming at u from every direction and what desides how miserable your early game is gonna be is dependent on how good or bad the elector counts desides to play. In my latest try i hade the Beastmen coming from the NE, Vampires from the E, Greenskins from the W and the goblins from the SW mountains all of them pretty mutch acted like they hade a military alliance from turn 5 and by turn 15 they all hade a full stack each that were attacking. It was absurd, recomended for new ppl hell no.

@@blugger I'm struggling, I've had 3 rounds in the last few days, and between Chaos in the North, undead in the South, Orks in the South, North, and West, and an the dreaded Wood Elves I am feeling like it's a harder struggle then lore for 40k and Fantasy combined. It's both glorious and frustrating. I've got a feeling the developers are trying to push people away from the Empire. But I've had a taste of the brick wall, and it is delicious.

@@TyllerBoom as nuln, I've generally started rolling once as I get the province directly south of the capitol There, soon as I get the garden quest (which will refund most of the cost of building one) and grab the halb + ebon + mortar recruit building, I'm largely set 2-3 ebon knights with free company accompaniment is basically GG. Will still struggle a little with vlad's first army, because his harem is ridiculous and might bleed you hard enough to get overwhelmed by his nigh insta respawn, but after wards I just rolled south through some GG no re ogres, greenskins, and coast. FCM are so ESSENTIAL to playing against Vlad early because just about nothing else has a prayer against him and his flying harem. Plus, they'll also defeat anything short of black knights, with just a bit of micro, while not folding to dang zombies like xbows Plus, I think there are ways to rush out the emperor's wrath STANK but I don't know how it goes.

Honestly, the most recent one is pretty fun. Lots of fun to be had with the Empire and Dwarfs. The Warriors of Chaos DLC is another cool one for the changes to the faction. I still find myself only playing Belakor for his portals, but the faction itself is honestly really fun to play in WH3 compared to WH2. I still haven't purchased Shadows of Change yet because I only want it for the Cathay stuff. So I can't speak much on that.

Hellebron is A tier imo. The buff to witch elves + that blood voyage + the increase to slaves + op sacrifice rite + more hags is A tier worthy in my exp. She bodies all her nearby enemies even though the Valkia battle is hard. Interested to see if anyone agrees or disagrees

Disagree because Valkia is right next to her, making the fight with her inevitable also witch elves and sisters of Slaughter are countered by Warriors/Chosen of Khorne(duel axes). If she were anywhere else on the map, she would arguably be the best DE Lord

Har Ganeth is the best Dark Elf faction. Its merely an issue of always being forced to attack and expand with them which hampers the experience. Who rests rusts. Especially true with Hellebron.

Hellebron is strong because Dark Elfs in general are really strong as a baseline. I’m with you in that I don’t think the Naggaroth start is as bad as Legend says but it is objectively a harder than normal situation with Valkia and Sigvald at your door.

Yuan Bo is the first legendary campaign in WH2 and WH3 where I was at #1 power ranking in the early game. Couldn’t believe my eyes. Every time confederation came off cooldown, there was a Cathayan faction begging for confederation, all the way up to Miao and Zhao

Agreed, full healing an army, making an army able to stalk and ambush like Skaven or giving them full movement again is busted. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them get their turn cooldowns extended and a reduction modifier added to research instead.

I think Gelt not being in S tier is not an issue of him not being strong enough, because he does get ridiculous, however everyone else on S tier gets their game breaking bullshit either right at the start of their campaign or very early on, and with Gelt it takes you almost into the mid game to run around with your wizard army, while Skarbrand wins the campaign by turn 10 and Ikkit Claw has nukes right from the start

I was one of those people who thought Malakai's early game was hella hard, til Legend pointed out how well the Stalk armor interacts with Gyrocopter stacks. Now I just capture the province with the starting army while the gyro building is constructing. Between the one you start with, normal, and adventure recruitment, you can have 13 units worth by turn 6, and easily steamroll through the region.

I know Kislev struggle with starting location (especially Boris) but I kinda of really like the lore of how they are supposed to be the main human faction constantly holding back the powers of Chaos from the north (much like Cathay). And it’s always just this constant slog to hold them all off and push em back. It just feels right.

I personally think the only thing hold back the skaven at all is their starting positions. They're all a bit challenging. Ikit has to deal with the beastman faction that can just ruin your plans to take control of the first region and Carcasonne. You can defeat them, but killing them will bring you into contact with the Woodelves(who hate your ass) the Dwarves(who hate your ass), the Vampire Count guys(who hate your ass), Grom (who doesn't hate you right off the bat but has to be dealt with one way or another) and the Ogres who can be a tad fickle. Snikitch has to deal with the whims of the AI in that the Deceivers, Lokhir and the vampire counts subfaction in the south can be your best friend, or they just randomly declare on you right after Cathay does. And then there is Gelt coming up from the south. Their mechanics are certainyl strong, but they kinda have to be to prevent you from being a rat-pancake. Throt's position is better, but there's not a 'clear' way for him to go. The north isn'' great, and going full south brings him into contact with Kislev+Wood Elves+daemons

gonna argue about Kairos, recently completed a long campaign with him and once you get force peace and his skill which reduces changing of the ways cooldowns by 3 turns pretty much no one can touch you if you don't want them to, was fighting across Lustria with clan pestilens as my vassal while fighting Kroq gar and keeping tiq taq to, Thorek and Settra at bay with force peace for fewer grimoires than I was making in a turn, already miss the ability to get a faction to leave me alone playing any other faction.

How about your S tier for PvP campaign? As for my experience Wissenland&Nuln with their gunnery are something to be reckoned with (plus Elspeth herself) and I would even think of them being an S. I mean you can counter it with shades or some stealth units but it is a hell of a micro in battle. Plus even then the amethyst ironsides and the artillery will deal hell of a damage

I played 2000 hours with Nurgle before update and 200h after it, most of it with Ku’gath. After update, he can everywhere recruit units for free at lvl9! -80% maintenance costs and 60% resistens against missles for all armies in one province. Defending your own cities is super easy because of immediate recruitment at full health. From my experience he belongs to the "S" (you need to confederate Tamurkhan for -80% maintenance costs and if you du that correctly you will get all his heros) (confederate Epidemius to get -90% maintenance and 70% resistens for him) Tip: Ku’gath Perfekt Plague is +30Armor +20%MissleRessitence -30%maintenance costs, switch that one Perfekt Plague between you armees to have it forever!

So i just wanted to add something to this tier list. I think Tyrion is definitely S tier. I realize he doesn't have magic. But my god he's so goddamn powerful in mele. The wizard he starts with is pretty good too. Heavens is highly under-rated. The thing about Tyrion is that the Phoenix is an incredible starting unit to get. The Silver Helms w/ Shields are also VERY under-rated. But most of all, his economy is BONKERS! 50% off on upkeep for virtually every unit you would ever put in your starting army. And he can basically out duel anyone. Find a smart balance between your spell line and getting plus magic item drop chance with your wizard. Tyrion is S tier. There is NO DOUBT that they made the game harder with patch 5.2. It's MUCH harder. I have actually struggled with certain campaigns since this past update. But not Tyrion. Playing as Tyrion is a joke! Its quite fun actually.

nakai and archaon are best friends at joining wars so their vassals stay out of the conflict, though its fun sometimes to unleash the horde with archaon later on personally i prefer archaon over belakor as i really like to use mortal units like chosen and knights and having a few demons in my armies as flavor, and the passive souls from vassals really help with keeping my gifts active

My experience with Malakai is that I never recruited dwarf warriors, so the nerf doesn't matter much. Waste of resources. What I like to do is recruit copters in the first settlement, delay going to throt by a single turn to get 3 copters, then move on. You only have like half an army at this point, but you can invest into his horde mechanic - and of course, by turn 5 you get 3 free great cannons. 4 copters, 4 cannons, Malakai, Gotrek, Gotrek's pet *AND* the spirit of grungi? Throt has no chance.

playing a Kugath campaign now. It was a dreadfully slow start. I'm steamrolling now, but it took a good hundred turns to get there. With Slaanesh, I wanted to see how few provinces I could physically own, but still win. I managed to seduce every Empire and elf faction. It was awesome!

I don't play tomb kings but I !@#$ing hate fighting them in the campaign. The seem to rebuild entire full 20 slot armies in a single turn and have like no upkeep. The fact you have to go up against them almost right off the bat as the Kroq-Gar really slows him down. They always have like 2 more armies than you right at the start and even if you take one down they just pop back up again at full health while your still at like half HP from the first fight and half to retreat to heal up.

Sigvald having access to the seduce faction mechanic is beyond OP when coupled with the Warriors' insane capacity for income once you get some vassals under your thumb. On top of the Undivided Gift of Chaos "Undying Oath," which boosts income from vassals by 100%, Sigvald has his skill Egomaniacal which boosts income from vassals by another 50%. Very early into the campaign, you can begin spamming gifts to any faction that can be seduced, which increases their Seductive Influence by up to 50 points per turn from "Diplomacy with Slaaneshi factions." Additionally, constantly sending gifts seems to prevent war declarations irrespective of how low your relations are. The process is somewhat tedious, but vassalizing a 40 settlement Reikland is quite the rush. As for having enough souls to make a 2,000 expenditure every 10 turns to buy another faction, Sigvald's ability to gift Marks of Slaanesh is supreme. Each Lord or Hero with the mark is a passive 25 souls per turn, and these marks are retained after vassalization. Hero actions on neutral lords or heroes will be a minor diplomatic penalty, but since the only way to get rid of a mark is to win a battle against a Slaaneshi faction, it's effectively permanent. This also makes having lots of Gifts of Chaos active at once trivial.

You underestimated Tomb Kings. Last time I player Khatep I did really well. I discovered that you can recruit units a experience level 9 in the mid game thanks to liche priest ability unlocked at level 10 and Khatep gets more lich priests! Killing Dark Elves is super easy as they are mainly garbage melee infantry and missile infantry which AI cannot use correctly. Grombrindal and Sisters of Twilight are easy to ally and even vasalize.

What I've noticed playing lizard men in 3 is if you get vampire counts as the endgame, legendary, you can kick ass with flying armies. But if you get the dwarf endgame, just delete yourself, you're gonna have a bad time.

I think, with the sheer amount of factions belong in A tier, you should make a overpowered tier for those broken faction

You don't play Greenskins often but I think you've got them completely wrong. Grom is S tier you can dominate right from turn 1 and take out the empire, bretonnia and high elves all in quick succession leaving you with very little threat. Wurrzag and Skarsnick are significantly more powerful than the other 2 i'd put them in A tier. I'd go so far as to say Azhag is D tier, he doesn't boost any usable units, orcs are terrible, he is a terrible fighter, his bound spells are the weakest version of those spells he's absolutely bottom tier. His start position is appalling you'll have early wars with Kislev, Drycha, Chaos Dwarfs and Dwarfs. Grimgor is slightly better but again you're using orcs for most the campaign which are significantly the worst units greenskins have, you could argue for him to be in B or C tier.

When you say kill the Von Carsteins and revive them to get Isabella as a LL do you mean to raid the land and have the faction come back? I haven't played the vampire counts in forever so don't know if they have some new feature I didn't know about before.

There is no way chorfs are better than dwarfs. Chorfs have to balance four different resource incomes (all of which you need), which requires a lot more skill than just gold, therefore having slower growth than regular dwarfs. On top of that, most of their good units are behind unit caps, which can be quite expensive to increse until you hit the mid game. While regular dwarfs have access to flying ranged units (to which a lot of factions just don't have any answer early game) from t2 building and very good gunpowder unit in the game that can be upgraded to ~175 range from two techs that are accessible before turn 20.

Missed the boat on Boris. The way to play him is to GTFO the Chaos Wastes and head home. Take out Goromadny, smack Aztaroth and Bob's your uncle. Lost time? Takes 2-3 turns, and trading settlements with Ropsemann and you're off.

you can't revive factions that have been confederated, they're gone forever. You can revive dead factions easily by occupying their main dark fortress. If you already own it and they're dead you'll have to abandon it and reoccupy it. if they don't have an associated dark fortress such as wulfrik or throgg then they have to be revived by revolt.

Personally i rank Durthu higher for getting access to both coeddil and queen ariel. No other woodelf faction can confederate ALL the others as far as Im aware? And I think Ive yet to ever see treemen die in most battles as my frontline tanks 😄. I would 100% put Slaanesh in S tier. I think they are the stupidest most broken faction in the game. If you know what you're doing, you can snowball so bloody quickly with them and make so many factions bend the knee for you. Getting devotees is stupidly easy and the fact you can dominate faction across the entire world with the cults and how many of those damn cults you can spam, I really believe that Slaanesh can control the whole map the quickest when you get the ball going, it's absolutely stupid the things you can do with them.

Gotta say, i just played a couple long campaigns with arkhan and settra, and wow. I honestly think tomb kings should all be d tier due to the army cap. Even after exploiting repanese's trait, they have to be the weakest race. Which is sad because they are fun to play.

I greatly disagree with putting Balthasar Gelt's faction in tier A, the schools of magic is a +S tier mechanic... I mean, how can you even defeat infinite winds of magic? Entire armies of mages that come out level 30 and generate like +25% provincial income? I think that not even 4 stacks of thunderbarges can beat an army of 19 Gelt wizards.

Teclis start is very bad, but Teclis himself is powerhouse, very early on he can just obliterate armies on his own. But that is about it... And now Gelt does the same, but a lot better.

disciples of the maw being B tier is criminal, their basic infantry melts other basic infantry. Boris being D tier and Skaven being S is strange to me as well. Pirates of Sartosa should be higher as well.

I disagree with the empire being in the same category as the dark elves. If this is about projecting power, the dark elves snowball much much harder. Morathi literally is unstoppable once you get your black guards

Bretonnia is a faction I just don't enjoy in general. But one of my biggest mechanical problems with it is that peasant economy just doesn't really make any sense. Your (soft) limit in the recruitment of your weakest units?! What? It just feels wrong from a thematic and gameplay point of view. You're encouraged to spam knights ASAP which will quickly lead towards boring monocavalry armies with no variety.

Aranessa's best unit is leviathans, not necrofex. not saying she is stronger than dreadfleet, but if you get the right units game goes to easy mode regardless of difficulty

To me Yuan Bo is S tier. His stone and steel mechanic gives him such a ridiculous economy, also the dual start is a very bad strategy. What you want is giving it up for the money and develop as fast as possible in Lustria, and confederate the faction that initially holds the bastion so you still have a hold in Cathay to prevent Lokhir, Snikch and Vilitch from overtaking Cathay. All you need is one army there to conquer and sell land until you confederate the one faction you sold everything to. They have disgusting economy, a good roster, powerful buffs, such a huge diplomatic boost that they can get trade with Archeon's vassal as soon as they meet them if they want to. What can happen to them? No one will even want to declare war as soon as they have 2 commerce districts due to the diplomatic boost. And reaching that point is easy as hell.
