I used to have both the freight yard, and superrails station when i was a child. I remember how hard i had to fight for my parent to even get it for me. They were convinced i wouldn't like it because it wasn't an electric train set, however I convinced them and we were able to get the last freight yard from a store that was going out of business. I believe they were then able to find the Superrails Station and gave it to me for Christmas. I had always wished they could have gotten me some of the gift sets or expansion tracks that were available, but i had plenty of fun with them as they were. What brought me here today is I want to get back into model railroading and i want to base my layout on these sets. Thank you for a wonderful, nostalgic trip down memory lane. Glad to see a new generation enjoying the same toys i played with as a child.

Thank YOU for the awesome story! And honestly a train set that mimicks the SuperRails + Freight Set would be a pretty epic design!! Planning to do it with HO? You’ll need something that can handle hills!

I had the freight set but I didn't know you could add stuff to it man. It brought a lot of good memories back. Thank you for sharing

When they were making those train sets they should have included a subway trainset as well, Also, For a brief time Mattel had a 'HO' 1/87 scale hot wheels vehicles line which they didn't revive, I wish they did, There should be two lines 1/64 and 1/87 scales.

If Hot Wheels continued their railroad lineup in the 1990s, they could have at least released more locomotives and railroad cars, particularly steam locomotives and passenger cars. Woulda been neat! They focused mostly on modern freight, so more passenger service with Amtrak woulda been easy. The others I’m not sure if they would’ve been on track for until the line had really taken off, which it never did.

@Dadified86 If Mattel did steam locomotives with 4-6-4 or 4-8-2 wheel arrangements, I'm sure they could have made two sets of flanged wheels and one or two sets of wheels without flanges; and their side rods would work pretty much the same way as the 0-6-0 tender switcher. Plus it would have been nice to see their cowcatchers and see them with front couplers, if you wanna double head locomotives. Also, the turntable for the roundhouse playset would just as long as the steam locomotives with the tender coupled on and the roundhouse itself would consist of 14 or 15 berths. And if this railroad lineup were to continue till, oh say, 1998, that's something I would have loved to play with.

They did mostly “modern” stuff for the 80s so it’d be cool if they came back with 2000s kinda stuff. Still needs something Union Pacific but I’m biased 🤣

I wish I tell had higher intentions for this train line1 reason it didn't sell very well was because it was compared to the motorized trains of tyco and bachmann at the time, That had similar features or more features With operating cars with loads/accessories, I think if Mattel tried to release a line like this in early 2,000s maybe it would have done better, I saw the Santa Fe diesel locomotive in a flea market

I think trying to release this less as a competitor to other “model trains” to focus this more as a way to expand and enjoy Hot Wheels it would’ve worked better.

I think the hot wheels railroad Would have been more comparable if it was released around the same time as jakk' pacifics Power Trains (not 2.0), Which were actually semi compatible with hot wheels cars, You could attach hot wheels tracks to the side of power train tracks to make a crossing, They are similar to the hot wheels railroad but they are motorized, And there were many more to collect connect and expand, and the couplers were very similar
