As a traindriver, this game sparked my interest, thanks to you Charlie. Although a Traindispatcher's job is much harder. that is when they manually have to do things, like this game in the beginning. Once you have things automated. you can just sit back and enjoy.

As a traindriver in Belgium, the game instantly reminds me of the people who operate the railroad signals. The graphics look spot on, albeit a little bit more fancy than they are in reality. In reality, at least over here, there are no train icons on the displays in the control room. Occupied and reserved sections are just green and red lines respectively. I am going to really enjoy this. Edit: I challenge you to try and run the Belgian rail network, if this is available in the game of course. Especially the area around Brussels could be very interesting. The real Belgian network has very high traffic loads, especially around Brussels.

Occupied segment was because you allowed a train to enter a block that was occupied - the other train hadn't left the station. There was a signal between them but it faced the other way.

29:28: Actually, you do want the relay sensor there. Sensors are directional, they only trigger when the train goes the direction that the command is set in. Later for more complicated sensors there can be multiple directions, and then only the rule where the train moves along with, gets triggered. Why you do want the relay sensor exactly there: Trains sense upcoming signals and slow down. If you place the relay sensor directly before the signal, the train has to almost stop and then pick up again. That is especially bad with IC (express) trains later that run 200km/h, because they will start slowing down a loooong way before the signal. So you always want to place the sensors a bit before the signal, depending on the speed of the train, to get smooth operations. For slow freigh trains for example, the sensors can be much closer to the signal.

Another thing to consider is, that once they run over the sensor, they "block" the segment, before they are already there. That is the speed vs. occupation balance that you want to get right. For some junctions, it might be better to take the speed penalty, but reduce the time that a train blocks a certain segment, by only triggering the signal and engaging the segment later, so that another train can run through in that time. You see, there is more to the game than fits the eye at first glance.

Relay sensors will 100% trigger for the opposite direction. I’m unsure why you’d think otherwise. You can totally have them accidentally trigger the signal in the opposite direction by going over them.

@@CharliePryorOh, I definitely have to try that out later. I've never paid attention, because the developers wrote that statement on their steam community thread, so I just took it as a given. I have auto blocks with both an arrival sensor and a relay sensor on it, one for the direction to the left, into the station, and the other one out of the block to the right. For some reason that was never a problem. But it might be that you are right. Then I have to question the developers' statement: Which sensors trigger when? I will have to test that out.

@@CharliePryorAh, just noticed that the sticky post is fairly new: 4th March last week. I just looked when the update was: 11th March. So those are quite substancial changes that happened VERY recently! I didn't realize that the game is still THAT much in development, and I thought like with other games, the sticky posts are who-knows-how old. Here are the changes: 1. Discarding Routing Queue Upgrade 2. Uni-directional Signal Sensors (Relay, Routing, Arrival) [...] Therefore, if Signal is reachable from the Sensor, automation will be triggered only if the train heads towards the Signal. 3. Bulldozing with De-allocation And here's the note in the changelist: UPDATE: Routing, Relay and Arrival Sensors will NOT trigger their automations if there is a direct path to the controlled signal (no branching) and the train is not heading towards it

You mean like placing stations? Not to my knowledge.

The map editor and play mode are strictly separated. So sadly, you have to build a map without the ability to run trains on them - you can place tracks and signals and everything, just not "play" it. And then once you have that, you can go over and play that. You can also edit the map again, so you could create your own network that way, by going into the editor, placing stations and maybe already some tracks, and then going into play mode and build out and automate the network. Then go back into the Editor again to add more stations. You have to add your own contracts though. Which makes sense, because the game doesn't know which stations hold which significance to the region. And that's why predesigned maps from the Steam Workshop are great: If you get one from your area where you live, people have put in typical contracts that fit to the real ones. For example: Large InterCity trains between certain stations, a metro train running through here, some regional trains from there to there. It's encoded into the map by these contracts, which shape the significance of some stations in relation to others, and that makes some of the appeal that it has. So the game gives you stations with different relations to each other, defined by the contracts. Now it's your job to build out an efficient network with that in mind.
