The 1.3 hp KA mixer has all metal parts and is a very good machine. I just got one for Christmas this year and this beast can handle anything. Love it!

I have a KitchenAid 5-quart mixer from 1989. I'm told Whirlpool was still using Hobart specs for these models. It's been an excellent mixer, but when it dies after the complaints I've read and heard for the new mixers, I'm afraid I won't be buying a KA mixer again. Why did they have to reduce the quality and put out pretty colors instead of something that is very strong and reliable?

Because....things that last forever are not profitable when planned obsolescence makes you go back and buy another. They are all like that now.

Is there anywhere I can go to where I can find more information about how the frame of the machine is made?

It is produced by die casting. Search for a video titled "High pressure die casting of zamak" which pretty much covers the topic.

Are they manufactured in St. Joseph, Michigan?

I think that's where they are assembled (not made .. the parts come from various countries.)

I worked for a company that manufactured the powder they used. It was sold to Whirlpool who has owned KitchenAid since 1989. Unfortunately, the whirlpool kitchenaid is in no way as durable as the original "Hobart" KitchenAid.. Hobart never used a plastic gear in the KitchenAid mixer like the one you can see in this video. The KitchenAid dishwasher went to hell as well. What a shame this brand took such a nose dive in quality.

The 600 Professional is a piece of junk. It cannot handle 6 cups of flour. Mine broke down two times already. I would never buy Kitchen Aid again. It is only good for a small amount of dough probably. I would not recommend this machine to anyone.

I wouldn't use a current Kitchenaid for anything more than cakes, desserts. No bread, regardless of what they say it can handle.
