Travis Underwood That's the greatest misconception of Staffs and APBTs : That they are somehow these genetically instinctual attack and guard dogs when in REALITY, they friggin SUCK balls @ that aspect due to their neediness of ppl, specifically their humans...they are NOT independent dogs who prefer or can do things by themselves and don't fare well alone or apart from their humans... They were bred originally to be really just animal aggressive but not towards ppl... Bcuz they were being bred basically for violence (be it bull or bear baiting, fighting, ratting, etc), control from their owners would've been absolutely essential... hence their heavy predisposition for loving ppl...

I love my AmStaff so much. I adopted him from a shelter 2.5 years ago when he was about 2. He’s the calmest, most secure dog I’ve ever seen. There are so many bad tempered dogs in my neighborhood, but no matter what size they are, when they growl or bark to lunge at him he totally ignores them...never cowers or responds to them in any way. He’s my best bud - I couldn’t imagine chopping his ears or tail off for no good reason.
@DB-ut6sw4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be good if he's older than 4 months because if he is it would hurt him . But it he's younger than 4 months it wouldn't hurt him if you chopped his ears because his cartilage isn't formed yet. I'm sorry if I made a mistake.
@puudathemeow55933 жыл бұрын
@@DB-ut6sw It does hurt them in the sense that it makes their body language hard for other dogs to understand, ears that always stand up can be (mis)interpreted as aggressive by other dogs which might lead to unnecessary fights, missing their tail can complicate this even further, dogs also use their tails for balancing so it's just cruel to dock a fully healthy and functioning tail. There are also lots of nerve ending in the ears so it's probably not comfortable at all to get their ears cropped, which is also the reason why it's illegal in many European countries.
@hyenaloaf18583 жыл бұрын
@@puudathemeow5593 if you have a poorly-done or super short battle crop it will interfere with communication, but a well-done crop of good length works just like a naturally prick eared dog's. Tail docking has many real, practical advantages in many working situations.
@puudathemeow55933 жыл бұрын
@@hyenaloaf1858 I doubt that most people who crop and dock are working with them in a way that requires those procedures. From what I've understood, you get more points in shows if you have them done in some countries, and I think that that is the wrong reason to do these kinds of procedures. It is different if there is actually a practical reason for it, but why not breed for naturally upstanding ears if floppy ears cause discomfort and are in their way when working. I don't know if breeding for a shorter tail could have any side effects on their health, but if not I don't see why they shouldn't breed them in that direction, it would mean not having to crop and dock them if they naturally looked that way.

@spoderman54814 жыл бұрын
@John Smith lol you're commenting on anything positive about these dogs. I trust mine with my little siblings and any stranger. I'd never trust dobermanns with anyone. They have inter-species rank drive. They want to dominate things outside of their own species, including humans. Mastiffs, pitbulls, staffies, amstaffs, don't have that.
@spoderman54814 жыл бұрын
@John Smith how do you even know that these "pitbulls" shown in news attacking children and their owners and such are really pitbulls? It's not like they show the papers and pedigree, just a stock photo of a block headed dog. These dogs that are all falsely labeled and called pitbulls are very commonly just a block headed dog without anything proving it's breed. They could be a AmStaff×American Bulldog mix, a StaffyxRottweiler mix, etc. The average person that looks at a Dogo Aregentino, Presa Canario, Cane Corso etc will just see a "pitbull" and that's what the news will call it. So obviously going by rates of dog attacks, "pitbulls" will be sky high when every block headed breed or mutt is called one. These block headed dogs are commonly associated with thugs and bad stuff, so then thugs get these dogs and train aggression into humans into them, or maybe they train them for personal protection incorrectly so the dog tries to bite any human it sees instead of defending only when there's a attack coming towards it's owner/family. Just a few reasons why the rates for "pitbull" dog attacks is high. Is dogs like malinois, GSD, rottweiler, Dutch Shepherd, were all suddenly called dobermanns, then the "dobermann" dog attacks would sky rocket too. It's a fact you're biased towards The popular German breeds, and against block headed dogs called "pitbulls". I can buy a dobermann and train it to attack any human in sight, like the same can be done with a block head dog. Don't look at it from a biased point of view.

As a Staffordshire Bull terrier Breeder from Staffordshire in England it lovely to see how similar the American Staffordshire is to our English Staffies. Obviously bigger and taller, but their temperaments seems to be almost identical. Unfortunately we don’t have many in the U.K but I hope they will become more popular in the U.K in future. I can just tell by watching many videos on them they are great, loving, loyal and crazy at the same time. Just like Staffordshire Bull Terriers in England.

Billy Sastard I was told that was pitbulls which by definition is a loose term in U.K standards as pitbulls are not a recognised Breed in the U.K. rather a pitbull type dog. However should a American Staffordshire bull terrier be recognised as a K.C breed in the U.K and not as pitbulls, they could be introduced to the U.K legally. I hope that happens. Either way breeders will find ways around U.K law to bring them in, which is why we have Pitbulls in the U.K
@thewoodworker17034 жыл бұрын
Matt G Many have tried but unfortunately the Am Staff falls under the umbrella as a PITBULL type and will not be recognised by the kc anytime soon. A story goes that a Spanish am staff kennels were trying to relocate to uk and a long story short they had been told the dogs would be seized under the DDA. I don’t condone the act personally , it’s got more holes than Swiss cheese, dogs of all breeds need a firm hand and when that hand is an unsuspecting uneducated owner of a strong breed that’s were the trouble begins. Saying that you do get dogs that are just wired wrong, in all breeds.

I just adopted an Amstaff from our animal shelter. Poor girl has been beat up by life and has the scars to prove it. She was used as a breeding female for the first years of her life before being left to fend for herself when they were done. Moxie is currently snuggled under a blanket (she won’t sleep without one covering her) on my bed and snoring peacefully. Sweet girl never has to worry about going hungry or being abused again. A great overview of the breed by Lisa, she captures the traits of the breed perfectly. They are wonderful all round dogs, exercise is the key as Lisa mentions. They are a very energetic breed and it is essential to exercise them consistently to stimulate them physically and mentally. They are special dogs, they are so tuned in with their owner feelings and so loyal and loving. When well trained and exercised and responsibly owned they are very social and friendly with other dogs. They are very hardy dogs, however it is well worth getting a DNA test if getting a puppy to check for a wide gene pool and to have a good look at the mum and dad. Very important to get the puppy off lead and well socialised as early as possible. As commonly mentioned they are fantastic with people and particularly affectionate with children. They tend to be quite bouncy when younger and they are strong dogs so need to be calmed down when visitors come round, distractions with chews, bones help. There is a stigma to bully breeds due to irresponsible dog owners, bad and inaccurate press, and their muscular appearance, something like Lisa says you have to stick up for the breed and help dispell all the untruths.

My staffy had juvenile epilepsy but grew out of it and into a wonderful companion. It was definitely hard tho if you have no one to help out. I'd say they were fine if you could get a good 45-1hr a day in where they can just let loose running with other dogs. But also remember that when they get larger people at the park are going to start turning on your dog (judging the breed). Make sure you got a cool friend circle with dogs who can play specifically with your dog. I had an older Boston Terrier (opposite sex) and they became inseparable (good socializing tool). I even trained my Amstaff to play nice with a Cat. There's really nothing you can't do with them if you are consistent, and start socializing young at 2-4months+. Good Luck if you get one of these!

I recently decided to foster an 8 year old AmStaffxPitbull mix from my knowledge. That foster turned into an adoption due to her history and the issues with the possibilities of transporting her across the country. She has been labeled as dog/prey aggressive from the no kill shelter she came from, and the no kill is important because she has spent nearly her whole life in that location. From her records, she was picked up at 6 months, then adopted and given back around 3 years old. After that, the day I saw her sensational smile coming out of the kennels, I knew she would not go back. Due to her life long stay, I figure she is adjusted to a life of staying in a kennel next to other dogs and let out twice a day for around 30 minutes at best with the reputation of fighting if given the chance. We go for two walks a day at around 30 minutes on average, 0.8miles, and she has lost nearly 2 lbs, started at 67lbs when fostered and 65lbs after two months. I have spoiled her with solid food to a mix of canned in the morning with a bit of solid and solid with broth in the evening to help her eat as she adjusted. As I have been walking her on the harness and leash, she has shown she is willing to sniff and let other dogs sniff her to just be around as owners chit chat. I still have not, and figure it is best not to due such based off of her shelter background, let her off the leash with another dog in any setting. The risk of doing that and her losing it all is not worth it in my mind at this point. To the AmStaff owners out there, would you ever consider letting this type of dog try to associate off of the leash with any other dog? To be safe, I am against it and will stay that way, but if anyone has a thought of some type of rehab to help her progress, please let me know because she is such a sweetie and really deserves it. Her mind set from being a shelter dog is people only bring her food, pets, walks, and love (all an animal asks for) but she would not be a good candidate to live with other pets is the major flaw in this area. Any human she sees is a friend and the compliments she gets from her behavior meeting new people is better than any other dog I have owned. Your help and response is appreciated. With her life to this point, I am willing to consider many options to try and help her out as much as possible. If her mind set is solidified at this point, I understand and am more than happy to deal with it and keep her around no matter what is said.

I don't purchase any breed from breeders and prefer to adopt from my local shelter. I'm a rottie and Amstaff/pittie girl. I'm sucker for these breeds. This woman is the epitome of a responsible breeder that focuses on health above all else. It's an amazing breed and I currently have a male/female pair and both are spayed and neutered. Very much wash and wear breed. Easy keepers feeding and weight wise but will get fat if you don't keep them active. I'm VERY much in the same camp of not allowing rough housing towards my dogs nor amongst my dogs while indoors. They're beyond easy to train and they're good at whatever you set them to doing. Rotties are the same way. I'll go to my grave with one or both of these breeds at my side. I currently volunteer at my local shelter and I focus on the pitties/rotties and bulldog mixes. They're worth the effort. Wouldn't trade my pair for anything ever.

E. M. This is a pitbull also. Both the APBT and the Amstaff are genetically the same. They are just different strains of the same breed, bred to be different weights, height, head size, color pattern etc. The law classifies them both as pitbulls.

Kocham tą rasę. Miałam takiego pieska przez 10 lat. Właściwie to nie pies tylko istota. Anioł nie umiała tylko mówić. Łagodna pieszczocha. Nigdy nikogo nie ugryzla. Haha. Jest jeden warunek. Takiego pieska mogą mieć tylko ludzie wyjątkowi. Haha. Tej rasie przynajmniej w Polsce okropnie dużo zła zrobili okropni ludzie. Mój anioł 😇 miał na imię Sonia. @Motor City Cobra No absolutely wrong first of all amstaff r muscular and powerful and even a middle size dog can inflict good damage it's there tenacity that matters and obviously their bite strength. Even pit bulls r not large bt enough to kill any body. It's d aggression that matters no one in their right mind would like to enter a property wid barking dogs who r baring teeth even they r not a large breeds.

I totally agree with all the things you’ve said about Am Staff... it is not the breed it’s how you treat your dog. Am Staff specifically will adjust and adopt to their owner’s emotions, needs, behavior, and attitude. My Am Staff saved my dad from 2 heart attacks in 2 consecutive years. He knows there is something wrong with my dad a week in advance and he was giving us and my dad warnings....Love your dog and they will return the favor with more love....We rescued our beloved red nose from a shelter when he was 2 years old.

We just rescued a 5 month old about two wks ago. Her name is Hazel and we absolutely love her. She is already house broken which is a huge blessing lol. Our 3 yr old with autism is taking a little time getting use to her but she’s patient. Only thing, she’s terrified of a metal dog bowl...maybe some ptsd there lbvs. She’s currently using plastic bowls.

One thing I'm concerned about it's an AKC breed so it looks like they are breeding for a shorter more bracycephalic snout on these dogs. AKC show breeder always breed for shorter snouts I think they've completly pushed in the Dogue De Bordeauxs snout in under two. decades.

Now that is my favorite kind of dog. My American Pitbull Terrier Matilda had AKC Papers and yes she was a pretty Pitbull Terrier as well. Full blooded American Pitbull Terriers can get up to 50lbs for the females. For the males they get up to 60 lbs. I think that the UKC and the AKC made those names up for the Clubs purposes of the American Pitbull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, they look the same to me. I will continue to have these type of dogs in the future for a pet to own and have to run all of the fun energy all out in the backyard, with some more Staffordshire Terrier buddies registered under their Club to play with. They eat Field Trail Dog food, I mix that Can Dog food with it some times, that makes them look muscular and strong. When you see their coat shine that means that they are healthy as a Horse. Keep them vaccinated on their shots and give them their Heartworm medicine or chew and they will live long and happy. They both come in the same colors, same height, same weight, and look the same. They are just represented by two different Kennel Club's that call these two Breeds American Staffordshire Terrier or American Pitbull Terrier.

@@rawjan39 I understand what you are saying. I'm talking about the ones with the wrinkles on their face and under their jaws. My Dogs have a tight muzzle and a tail that is down like a water pump handle. Some people are breeding these dogs now and they really do not know what they are doing. Some of these dogs that people are calling Pit bulls are Hybrid Breed. Around my way that's what we would call a fake Pitbull a Mut. The Staffordshire Terriers that I was mentioning about, that's just a Nickname that we would call a Pitbull. Those Bully breeds are not what I was talking about. They get much heavier, and fat. But I love the American Staffordshire Terrier. I had a lady in a store one time, get very defensive about a Staffordshire Terrier that she claimed was registered as a German Staffordshire Terrier, but hey everybody has their on taste in what they like. So be careful about who you buy a Staffordshire Terrier from. I check for the Kennel Club Papers as well.
@mr.coolbreeze41344 жыл бұрын
@@rawjan39 Thank you. American Pitbull Terriers are their on breed and I have a book on them as well. They look the same to me, that's my opinion. I would breed them by what it says that they are on the Registered Papers that they are under in the Classified adds in the Newspaper for Dog listens. I like both Breeds their both muscular, short, and nice pets to own.
