, the higher your top end but you’ll lose some torque. For example, if you have a 12t and 74t sprocket, your speed ratio is 6:1... if you have a 12t and 60t sprocket that would be a 5:0 ratio. If you went 14t and 40t sprocket that’s like a 2:8 ratio! You would need to push your bike to take off lol, but after about an 1/8th of a mile you’d be going 65 lol. A good middle of the road ratio is between 5:5 to 6:0. As someone said, if you have hills and terrain, you want the sprocket to be a little larger, if not, then go with the smaller. Hope that helps.

So I have a 14 tooth clutch and a 36 rear sprocket which is way too small I need a larger rear sprocket but I want to have as much top speed as possible and still be able to take off so 14 to a 60 or 14 to a 65 I don't know what to do

Currently on a 4:1 with a 15t clutch up front and a 60 in the rear. Tire size is 13 inches in diameter and my mini bike FLIES! Came from a 5:1 with 11 inch tires and gained about 13 mph in top speed.

I have 60 rear sprocket, does the clutch tooth number have to be even? Or running 15 is okay? My 60 tooth with the 12 tooth makes it wheelie way too much.
@NaturesChosen4 жыл бұрын
@@Turbski1 what do you you mean when you say even?

Duvall Mariano even amount of tooth on the clutch, my current is 12, switching to 15 for my 60 tooth rear if thats ok
@NaturesChosen4 жыл бұрын
@@Turbski1 yeah that's perfectly fine. That's the setup that I have. You will lose low end torque but gain top end speed. Sounds like you were concerned about the wheelies so this setup will eliminate the wheelies and have you going faster.

Duvall Mariano perfect, my top speed is lacking. Muffler and carb coming next after the clutch.

What rear sprocket should I run with a 14 tooth clutch on a mini chopper 150 lb guy 10-in wheel to get some top speed but still be able to take off right now I have a 36 rear sprocket which is way too small the bike barely takes off does about 40 pinned it sounds like the engine is idling at 40 doesn't have enough torque to pull that gearing so should I order a 60 tooth or?

I’d go for a 60 tooth

Anthony I often like & appreciate your videos. I would like your thoughts on this. Here is the progression on my BT200X. All on a flat both directions 220 pound rider, 16 psi in tires & box stock gps 20 mph. Remove soldered screw 25 mph. Drilled hole in throttle linkage arm to move spring 32 mph. Removed governor, added non epa version of carb with 38 jet, added 18 pound valve springs, header, intake & filter. 38 mph. Added gopowersports CVT 45 mph. Think it’s practically maximized without going into the motor which isn’t worth it to me. Bike doesn’t seem to be out of cam, fuel, or valve spring IE no valve float. It just seems to have insufficient torque to push me faster not that I need it to. That said since it has CVT and is not max Rpm’d out would the higher torque multiplication from the right size higher tooth count rear sprocket provide the torque to propel me faster before running out of breath? If so what do you think would be the ideal tooth count? Open to anyone with constructive input.
@TheVintageEngineer4 жыл бұрын
Vern Lochtefeld you are now geared too high with the CVT. I would get a 60 tooth rear sprocket that will give you back some torque and should give you some speed back as well. Then you can tune the front sprocket by changing it to an 8 or 9 tooth (40/41/420 with 5/8” bore “c” type) for more torque (gearing it lower).
@vernlochtefeld16264 жыл бұрын
Anthony Shelton First Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have not looked into the sprockets & chain stuff nor all of the CVT or TAV stuff with I take it different shafts front and or back? (“5/8 inch bore c type”) I take it the 60 tooth rear sprocket can be run with either chain? Then later if I choose I can get the front sprocket and or do I need the rear shaft and naturally the stronger chain to go with it at the time I do the rear sprocket?
@TheVintageEngineer4 жыл бұрын
Vern Lochtefeld you can keep the same chain. They make ones that work with the 420 chain. You only have to replace the front sprocket, shaft stays the same.

I have a 354cc Kawasaki motor on a go cart with 12 tooth clutch. And 9.5 sprocket. The clutch get red hot on try to take off . Do I need to change the sprocket to smaller one or go with gear instead of the clutch?
@TheVintageEngineer3 жыл бұрын
Geared way too high. You are overdriving the axle (axle spins faster than motor). Even on my mini bike with a torque converter at the tallest speed the overall final gear ratio is like 5.75,, stock coleman mini bike is 25, yours is 0.79. Depending on tires size you may want like a 36 tooth sprocket on the rear axle.

I’m dying to go 3:1 but I can’t find a 15T 3/4 shaft sprocket for a 50 Tooth rear. It seams like I’m finding 1” shaft in 15T .
@TheVintageEngineer5 жыл бұрын
Captainkleen what chain size? 420 or 35? Could be physically impossible as there are minimum tooth counts for each shaft size. For instance, 8 tooth is the minimum for 420 chain, 5/8” bore.
@NaturesChosen4 жыл бұрын
Why can't you just get a 19t clutch with a 60 in the rear?

what if u got 14 tooth clutch wit 20 tooth jackshaft goin to 10 tooth then the 10 going to the rear sproket thats a 52?
@dwaynejohnson6277 Жыл бұрын
52/10*20/14=7.5 overall gear ratio. Its a good middle of the road ratio. Good for offroad or on road. If you want more speed on road, go closer to 5 overall. If you want more acceleration, especially on grass, go closer to 10 but your top speed will be less. Im 210 lbs and have built 10 minibikes. I always aim for ratio of 10 cause im heavy and drive them offroad. I care about acceleration only

So is it like a mountain bikes gearing system?

Theory is the same. Small tooth count on pedals to high tooth count on wheel gives more torque/less speed.

That will reduce speed. To increase speed you increase clutch or lower tooth count on rear sprocket
