I have had one or another 45 ACP Smith revolver since 1981, and you do not need a tool to load and unload the clips, technique is enough. I rarely use half moons anymore. I love the 2 shot clips in snake country for shot loads. My main use of guns is as an outdoorsman, and I love the clips as they make it very hard to lose brass.
@mkendall83932 жыл бұрын
The ruger lcr moon clips are spring steel but made in such as way that the rounds are well retained but also easily installed and removed from the clip. They are patented and IMO a game changer in moon clip design.

Moon clips weren't invented to be speedloaders. They were created to serve as an artificial rim for rimless cartridges. That's why actual speedloaders are more durable and failsafe than moon clips.

I picked up a 1925 Webley that was rechambered for 45 ACP, but didn't shoot it much because I am afraid of bending the clips. Thanks for showing me how to get that gun back into action Jerry.
@doughesson3 жыл бұрын
Moon clips come from the 1917 revolvers when General Pershing wanted to arm as many soldiers as possible with .45s but there weren't enough 1911s to go around. First they were half moon clips for 3 rounds, then GI ingenuity started welding two clips to load 6 rounds at once.

Hey Jerry those polymer moon clips are still around. My friend Scott Beckham designed and makes them for many S&W platforms like 625, 25, 610, 686 etc. Years ago we met you at Shot Show and introduced them to you. They are called RIMZ MOONCLIPS. I’m not sure Scott is maintaining his website Beckham Designs these days as his health has declined. Many of the distributors carry his products however. As you mentioned they load very easy by hand and are almost impossible to wear out.

I have a friend who is friends with Jerry! (I think that makes me almost cool). I was out shooting with my friend, and it was the first time i'd seen moon clips. this guy is by far the fasted wheel gun shooter in my area and he used them exclusively. he had a few sitting near his ammo bag, and i picked one up curious how it worked. i picked up an empty case and started to touch the brass to the clip when my friend BOOMS at me "DON'T TOUCH THAT!" Lol i almost peed myself. he explained that even playing with a moon clip on its own can warp it, making it unusable and trying to load a metal one by hand is impossible and will always lead to ruining the clip. he explained that once the clip is bent AT ALL he throws them out because they never return to perfectly flat no matter what you do (heat, dead blow hammer, ball peen, etc). mishandling a loaded moon clip makes it even easier to bend them too because you get extra leverage lol. it left an impression. but dang, this guy was lightning with the clip. literally faster than i could reload any type of firearm. he eventually went to stock semi auto pistol (a big para .45) because he had no competition in wheel gun and easily got first place in every match.

I run with 2, model 64s that I had gunsmith-ed to accept moon clips and use your grips on these, plus many others. I also changed to serrated triggers. I also have one model 627. I like the two 64s due to the sights, and that is why I did them. I use a pre-made tube to unload them. I can only run Remington brass which limits me. That is the only gripe. Do you find that some brass works better then others? I am saving this video for future reference, you gave me an idea or two I might try down the road. Thank you, lots of information here, some I knew and some I didn't!!!

The problem with the polymer clips is that they don't like heat. I've found that the acp rounds load better than 38 or other rimmed cartridges. For straightening my moon clips I just used flat concrete and a ball peen hammer. Thanks for the dollar store golf club pointer. I need to make me one of those.

@DABrock-author3 жыл бұрын
They were originally for using rimless pistol cartridges, such as .45 ACP, in revolvers to allow extraction of cases, taking the place of the rim normally found on revolver cartridges like .38 Special, .45 Colt, etc. They have been adapted to other revolvers & cartridges because of the easy reloading in match situations.
