I don't remember if you mentioned it, I'm coming back to this, but this is a great way to remove some hiss or noise from a recording! Just tried it and it sounds way cleaner than just eq and I think it might be more applicable than something like turning down transients on drum buss. Some tags so it shows up in a search might be helpful to a lot of people. Also, this is the best video I found for an explanation on multiband dynamics, great work!

Nice tutorial, very useful. I have practiced since then and found a very useful application. I usually duck my bass by injecting the kick signal into the sidechain input of compressor just to prevent any frequency overlap in the low range. But I wanted to improve the process so that only the low range of the bass is compressed... preserving the mid and high ranges of the bass. hé hé that's where multi band dynamic is coming in! I inject the kick signal into my sidechain input, only activate the low band and apply downward compression on it. I usually use the sidechain monitoring & band monitoring to tweek the whole thing. And the result sounds fantastic !!! So thank you very much to allow me being more creative :)

Cool video, was looking for a full overview of the Ableton Multiband, but just have to let you know that while demonstrating compression, you were actually using expansion (ratios like 1:0.70 for example), which resulted in *increased* transients rather than actually compressing down the sound.

There's a stock m4l tool called band splitter (or something like that, I'm not at the DAW rn), which allows you much deeper control and the ability to use whichever compressor you would like to per band. It also allows you to insert other fx into each band, or more than one compressor, which can be super useful. With mbd in ableton, the only reason people open it is for ott as far as I can tell lol 👍

I understand the concept of downward versus upward compression, but I don't see any difference in what you are doing to show this? I mean, what setting do I need to change in the ableton compressor so it will be doing upward compression instead of downward compression?

Good question. I should had been more clear about this. Using the Ableton Live's own stock compressor you can only do downward compression and upwards expansion, but you can't use it currently for upward compression. But on Live you can do it using Multiband dynamics :) hope this helps!

Hi! I know in the earlier portion of the video you said “we might not remember” what you said so refer to the info view. However, what you said was that downward expansion and downward compression are in one tab and upward expansion and upward compression are in the other, but you proceeded to show that that was incorrect. Because what you showed was that downward expansion is with upward compression And that upward expansion is with downward compression. I appreciate and pay attention to your videos, so it just struck me asap. Haha all love! not sure if I’m confused or if that was an honest mistake. Thanks for all your effort!

from the books I studied, I learned that compressors are usefull when receiving a signal at -12dBFS peak and -18dBFS RMS. Here you're audio clips plays at -0.6 dBFS!?!

Lovely stuff, yet again! I do have a question (it has nothing to do with dynamics though). Don't you have issues with the radiator hanging behind you when recording? I have a big metal convector to heat the room i record in (alas, it's the only place i can put my studio) and vocals tend to have a tremendous reverberation when i hit above talking decibels, giving a metallic reverb. This has forced me to work with dynamic mics only, as it's just too present when recording with a condenser microphone.
