I bought one drake and four females, two of which were just pullets only eighteen months ago. There are now at least fifty muscovies in the garden = and at laeast twenty have gone wild on the river! They surely can breed. I love muscovies - they are gentle and intelligent and take care of themselves, though they do love their wheat each day. They FLY! That is a delight to me because they go wild so easily, also taking carae of their eggs in the hedges and raising their babies all by themselves.

We bought a drake and six females last fall, initially because we wanted to deter a goshawk that had been taking some of our young chickens. It kind of works as the goshawk won't strike anywhere near the muscovies, especially the drake. They get along very well with the chickens and we are actually starting to prefer them over our chickens since they are so smart, calm and friendly and do so much less damage in the garden.

Great idea! Muscovies are so tough and I find that they tend to deter predators fairly well, especially the drakes, as you said. They definitely do way less damage in the garden and are amazing at killing harmful pests in the garden.

I started feeding the fish in apt pond, when a mom brought her babies to eat the pellets i ended up buying duck food. Now 2 yrs later i have a regular crew of those grown up babies and their friends that shows up for daily chow. Its been so interesting to see their inter-duck relationships and personalities. Sometimes its sad, bc the coyotes or raccoons raid nests and sometimes get the hens. But it is necessary numbers control, bc they do multiply really fast once a colony is settled. Just neat birds!

Adorable! I have 2 Muscovy ducks, a girl and a boy. And just 2 days ago we found out they had fertilized eggs! So we put them in the incubator, they should hatch in June!! I got permission to keep one of the ducklings (if they do hatch) as mine! I get to take 1 duckling and raise it as mine! Of course I'd take care of all of them, but I'd just have one as mine.

Here in south Florida you can find these ducks in almost any water in populated areas. I have grown up with these ducks and have saved many and raised them from eggs. The more you handle them the more that avoid you. If one becomes too familiar they like to bite. The genetics vary as one drake becomes dominant in the flock. My domoiant drake is mostly white with dark feet and the secondary drake is black/white with yellow feet. Females vary from white, grey to black.

@@jessijoehnck8973 Oh wow, never been to South Dakota, but I'd love to visit one day. It is a beautiful state! We'd love to live more rural, someday, with a lot more acreage. I am definitely going to be doing some more Muscovy videos, especially in the Spring when they start laying again and I will be talking a lot more about my goals for our nesting system. The females like to nest in their own space and if they are too crowded, they will refuse to nest in the place you want them to, in favor of a place of their own choosing that is more secluded. We lost one hen this year because she decided to nest in a not-so-great spot in our hay barn. She was a first-timer. My husband and I have some really fun ideas we're going to play around with next year on taking our repurposed corn crib duck house (you can check out that video of mine if you're interested) and making it more customized to Muscovy's nesting habits.

Hi, I'm also in AZ- Tucson. I got muscovies from a friend last year & when 1 went broody this spring she gave me a dozen random eggs (mine are all hens) from her nests. 10 hatched, a snake (we assume) got 2 on their birth day & 1 more squashed in the scuffle. So now I have 7 big ducklings & today we're clipping wings & checking sex. I wish I'd known about the feet, some of them were so klutzy with their big feet when they were little, I could have had a heads up earlier. Can't really keep more than 2 drakes- and maybe only 1, depending on temprement. I really like the colors of the 2 biggest ones. So we'll see. Thank you, Katlyn, thos was very helpful. How well do miscovies mix with an integrated coup of regular ducks and chickens?
@FableHillFarm
@FableHillFarm 2 жыл бұрын
As long as your Muscovies have enough living space, have a pool for bathing, have a good hen to drake ratio and ample feed (particularly if not free ranging) AND do not come from any aggressive genetics, you should have no issues integrating them with a mixed flock of other poultry types. My ducks free range with chickens and guineas and do fine with them.

Great information, I have pekins and runners, I want to get a few muscovys, should I be concerned about aggression or them flying off?
@FableHillFarm
@FableHillFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Brian, thanks for watching. :) I would say that aggression in Muscovies is definitely genetic (we would absolutely cull aggressive birds) and you should ask whoever you find to acquire them from what their birds' temperaments are like. Aggression is typically only seen in drakes - and they can do serious damage because they are so big. So a nice drake is an absolute must for me. Do you free-range your birds? If so, I would say that you'll want to clip a wing at first, but, as long as you have enough for them to eat, they really shouldn't take off. My birds are perfectly happy to keep on our property and we only have 10 acres...they probably only access about 4 of of those acres regularly.

ACV (with the mother) is great for the immune system, it contains nutrients and healthy bacteria. I add a dollop (probably 1-2 tablespoons) per 5 gallons. I do this periodically (1-2 times weekly) for overall health. With young birds that were shipped or brought in from elsewhere, I do ACV very aggressively for initial coccidia treatment (with other things) and for meat chickens I give it every other day.

@@tariqramzeen973 I’m not a vet but if you are truly concerned and it is financially feasible for you to do so, then sure, call a vet. What I, personally, would do with such bird as described is isolate her in a crate inside of the flock’s normal hangout, give her some straw, make sure she has shelter, food (cooked eggs with warming herbs in them in addition to regular food, maybe some fresh grass or greens if possible, worms, etc), warm water with apple cider vinegar, oregano (I would use an essential oil form personally), fresh minced garlic and honey for a day or two and see if she doesn’t improve. Sounds potentially injured or suffering an immune response of some kind? Again I’m not a vet and you definitely should consult a vet and/or do your own research but this is what I would do, before I called a vet. Also they make powdered electrolyte and probiotic supplements for poultry and I would offer these in water in addition or in lieu of what I mentioned above. I would not personally call a vet for a duck. I don’t think my vet would even treat one, I’m honestly not sure.

@@lisaannmaria4053 you should keep the duckling away from the older ducks until your duckling is older. Drakes and the hens have been known to kill the ducklings .. I raised a muscovy drake from the first day he hatched he is now 1 year old ( he thinks I'm his mother and he follows me every where and I can handle him very easy .. this easter i found an abondon muscovy duckling and brought her home ( she is 3 months old now ) she started following daffy from day 1 and imprinted on daffy and he was very good with her at first he couldn't understand why a little yellow fluff ball was like his shadow and wouldn't let daffy out of her sight .. Daffy was a great father and I'm proud of him for raising the little duckling. Lucky the ducklings name turned out to be a female and she is 3 months old now and they are inseparable. The weird thing is since lucky didn't imprint on me she wants nothing to do with me and she sounds like I'm killing her if I touch her lol .. she has gotten better as she got bigger but I thought since I interact with daffy and he follows me everywhere that she would be more friendly towards me and trust me the way daffy does but she doesn't.. she knows she is well loved and fed and she seems happy .. they are pets and sleep in the house at night and are free to come indoors as often as they want .. they seem to prefer hanging out in the house more then they do outside sometimes lol .. they also hate the cold , hate the rain and hate playing in their pool they whould rather take a bath from their water bowl .. they are quite intelligent and they love a routine .. and daffy along with baby girl ( our family dog ) are equally protected of our property and they dont like strangers on the property my dog and daffy get very aggressive towards strangers and lucky the female muscovy is very gentle and very shy .. daffy is out going and very vocal . They also sit by the door waiting for me to come home from work and all 3 greet me with wagging tails and excitement and daffy will start talking and he can get very loud when he is happy and excited .. I love my pet muscovies I think they make great pets . And just like pet dogs , cats or children. Muscovies are not alike they all have their own personalities and their own ways about them .. Good luck with your muscovy ducks they are amazing and make you smile a lot and fall in love with them . They are like dogs with wings imo 🙂

That’s interesting...how do you like to cook it? We have not found that to be the case. I think it depends on how you season it. One night I cooked it like pulled pork in the crockpot and the next evening we reheated the leftovers, seasoned it a little extra with some cumin and had shredded duck tacos. Both meals, you had no idea what type of protein you were eating, it was just juicy and flavorful.

Then put the whole duck into a cooking bag for 1 hour an 20 minutes. Then I slice off the most of the meat into a platter. Then made a Honey glaze which is 1/4 Cup of orange juice and a 1/4 Cup honey warm in the microwave for 1 minute. Pour the honey glazed on the Duck. Then service the duck. Don't forget that wild Muscovy Ducks carry diseases , & true or not that there is a roomer that they ruin neighbors screens more then once , & ruin yards , & gardens , & chase other duck species out of state I'm guessing the other youtube video is getting at ?. I miss the ones I had . But they were not wild so likely had shot's . I believe ducks attack other ducks because they don't know the duck & because the other have a clutch some where or have babies some where , & I do know that Geese , Swans , try drowning adult ducks , & cows will eat a baby duck , & a deer as well , snakes , owls , Eagles , Cat fish , Bass fish , maybe Carp too , & Pike , & snapping turtles maybe as well . The wild ones should be caught alive , get shot's , & sent to people who want them who will pay shot's for the babies by check up to see if there are paper's saying so like a receipt .
