It took years of development, but they finally did it. They produced the least inspiring cover science has to offer.

I love some of the opportunities for humor this creates. I’ll never forget my first time playing realizing the optics of my meat packing place located next to the graveyard. It’s hysterical.

I’ve never played it but I did consider buying it. After watching this review I just went to my FLGS and purchased it 🙈 looking forward to playing it!

I had the original base game with the expansions in a broken token insert. I sold this for the kickstarter version. It is super fancy, but I agree that it doesn't get played as much any more. Maybe, just maybe I will follow your lead and go back to the new base game. I do love the borders from suburbia inc, they add a lot to the game.

I have the collectors edition too, and I really like it, BUT I have never played or seen a normal edition anywhere, board games aren't that easy to find where I live so I can't really compare it. And also the Pandemic hit shortly after I got my copy of the CE so I've played it twice only with other people being that I live alone, hopefully it'll get more plays once it's easier to get together with other people again.

Matt, the one negative you mentioned regarding gameplay was our sticking point issue with the game. There’s a general best path to play so the more experienced player won significantly every game, but no one enjoyed the game enough to play it much more so we will never get to the point where we are more equal in experience. And if we were then I think we would all try to follow the same path, and maybe the timing of the tiles being revealed then effects who wins?

What's the path? I must be a big ol dummy because I've had it for years and never discovered it.

@@BrandonGraham I have only played half a dozen times because no one else I’ve played this particular game with has wanted to play again, but it seems fairly obvious that the way to play is to move up your income track as far as you can as quickly as you can (ignoring the lower track that contributes to points so that you aren’t held back in income by passing the red lines). Then with your income close to max you can then buy whatever is revealed to help you win the game. If multiple players pursue this fairly obvious winning path it then comes down to who was fortunate enough to get the better income tiles earlier on since they are ahead when it gets to the late game when you go hard on the points track. Issue is, if multiple players are high on the income track then when nice tiles are revealed it’s just a case of who’s turn is it next since it isn’t an issue paying the extra to buy even expensive tiles further up the river.

@@benjaminjohnson8377 That's funny. When I teach the game, I tell people about how, as a growing city, you want to build out your infrastructure before it is crushed by overpopulation. Focus on finding streams of revenue, and what industries your city will be known for. It's not the "fairly obvious" play. It's exactly how it should work. Euros are often about building an engine and determining when to "turn it on." But I have not had a single play where everyone is swimming in money, just snapping up all the best properties when they become available. Maybe you're playing with geniuses, but some of these tiles require three full rounds of maximum income, and not spending any money in order to buy them when they hit the market. And then you're poor again, so you're not immediately buying the next expensive property. This game has fascinated everyone I've taught it to. That being said, I play with Suburbia Inc. 100% of the time.

Having played over well of a dozen games, including the 1st expansion, both the theories work. I've seen people win by heaving a steady reputation of 7/8 and a similar income. It really depends on whether the buildings that come out in the "C" stage, if your money strategy works, so it's a risk. Whereas keeping up a steady reputation from the start makes it tricky to be caught up with and for your opponents it may come at the sacrifice of some of their personal/public goals. Yes, we've dealt with a run-away leader with experience vs non, but a lot of strategy minded games are like that. Play the game 4 maybe 5 times with the same group and you'll find that you have to work what is presented to you on the market. One time we allowed someone to get a 2nd home-owner's association, he did not need to increase income for quite some time, here's where you become experienced and prevent similar scenarios in the future at a small sacrifice.

I’d say don’t get the expansions at all even if you like the game. It makes it less tight, less synergistic and just clunkier.
