In this video, we talk about switches - specifically those rocker switches that are likely found in your RV. This tutorial will explain the differences between switches so you can be better informed when you have to select a switch.

Many thanks for this informative video. I learned quite a bit from it, as I have had to replace a few switches in my motorhome. One question for you. I need to replace the speed control switch on the ceiling fan. The fan, is similar to a Max Fan, but a different brand no longer being manufactured. The switch is a standard size 3 position rocker switch for Low- Medium- High speeds. What do I need to search for? All I seem to find online are On-Off-On switches.

Dear RVProject, Thank you for the video. Among the ocean of YT content, I stumbled upon this video now and it was relevant and helpful towards my application. I have a doubt and if you could respond to this comment, I would decide if I could go ahead with my application specific purchases. So here's what's in my mind: I have this wiring harness relay kit (1) to my car horn which connects to both my stock horn (1) and a secondary aftermarket dual horn setup. With the flick of the switch I can activate either the stock horn, the Aftermarket dual horn or deactivate both horns in the middle position. 3 wires from the harness (1) is connected to one half of the 6 pin DPDT 3 position On-Off-On switch. The other half of the switches 3 pins aren't connected to anything. I have another stock horn (2) in my car at a different location behind the bumper. It's just sitting there and I'm planning to give it the same treatment of the stock horn (1). However this time instead of using using another independent switch for the same application, can I connect the switch wires from the Wiring harness (2) to the other half of the existing 6 pin switch which isn't connected to anything? Asking this here as I do not want 2 independent switches which do the same work at the same time. Should I be worried about the capacity of the switch even though both Wiring Harness (1) & (2) having independent relays be attached to the same 6 pin DPDT switch? Would my above theory work? The car in question is not my daily driver. It's a project car for off-road application with lots of wild goats and cows around and would take it on road rarely. It would really be helpful for me if you could respond to this comment. Thanks a lot.

Watched your video and found it very interesting. I’m trying to do something a little different with the 12v fluorescent overhead light in my rv. The lights have 2 12” tubes and an on/off rocker switch. I want to replace the tubes with 4 strips of leds and the switch with basically an on/off/on on switch. In the on position, 2 of the led strips would be on. In the “on on” position all 4 strips would be on. Kind of building in a 50% or 100% light option with the switch. I’ve searched for a couple of hours trying to find a mini rocker switch that can do this. Any ideas what this type of switch would be called and where I can find one?

Thanks for the info however I have a different issue which I am thinking you could help me with. I am creating a live well on my pontoon boat and there is a unused on off on rocker switch on the dash I would love to use. Any idea how I would wire that as I just need an on off. Thanks Murray

Great video. I’m trying to replace a safety switch in my lawnmower, which they no longer make the safety switch for and basically the inner workings are two of four wires are connected when the lawnmower is off and in charging mode and then they released and the other two are connected when running mode, what kind of switch would this be? So basically two wires are connected when charging and two different wires are connected when running. Only two wires are connected at any given time.

I have a 8 connection switch that came from a Semi Truck. This switch was used to "flash" the trailer lights off/on. How can I wire this to do the same for a 5th wheel? Any help?
@RVProject

The trailer lights are on a separate wire. You would have to identify that wire in your tow vehicle, then put any SPST switch that can handle 15A on that wire. You would probably want a SPST momentary in the OFF position. In other words, it is on all the time but off when you depress it. Look for SPST ON - (OFF) designation in the part description.

So if it says MOM then I have to hold the button in that direction to get it to stay on? I have a 6 terminal switch inside my RV that allows me to turn on and off the house battery to the system. I think it's dead.
@RVProject

Correct. MOM means Momentary as well as (ON) or (MOM). The switch stays on only as long as you depress the button. For example, some awning switches are of this type. As long as you depress the button, the awning operates. When you release the button, the awning stops.

@@RVProject But what about specifically for the battery cut off switch? I have zero electrical background and have learned more than I care to know today trying to find answers. I do know they say not to hold this switch. Just to hit it for a second. Longer than that will turn off the solenoid and you have to reset it by disconnecting the ground cable on the battery. However that has not helped my situation.

All that and didn't cover the switch I'm looking for. I need the switch as you walk in the door that disconnects and reconnects the battery power to the RV. It toggles up and activates the battery disconnect solenoid and snaps/toggles back and remains lit till you activate it again and it snaps back and turns off.

If I recall, the disconnect for my Class C simply used a SPST or SPDT momentary switch. They are likely available from the same mfg that sells the disconnect.

@@RVProject Yeah I'm thinking thats what mine is. You activated up for one second and the power come on and the switch lights up but springs back. To turn it off you do the same action and it shuts off. Well when it works correctly it does. not sure if its my switch or not as the solenoid was bad. Might have another bad solenoid. It worked fine a couple of times now nothing. ugh

@@rlhagemann You can always replace the mechanism with a marine-grade master on-off switch. This is a manual switch and should solve your issue once and for all. I will be doing a video on the installation of such a switch next season.
